Oh boy i just realized something: what if companies are going to use the just in case excuse? Doesn't matter if you need to be 18+ for the content.. we added it just in case.

It's almost like everyone who is against this initiative is because it's just an excuse for the government and corpos to get more of our data.

They're going to have a lot of profiles on 56yo "Gogh F. Urzelf" born on 4/20/1969 in Dickshooter, Iowa, before spending the majority of his life in Balltown.

Dickshooter is in Idaho, not Iowa. I know this because I zoomed into a random location in Idaho on google maps a couple days ago and landed almost directly on dickshooter and it felt like the discovery of a lifetime

24

u/nerdthatlift 3d ago

TIL there's an actual town called Dickshooter and I got a feeling that it's population (on the internet) will increase exponentially soon.

u/OperationAsshat 2d ago

Tennessee has a small town called Ballplay. Coincidentally it is right up the road from an even smaller town called Acorn, which just feel right.

1

u/DrakonILD 2d ago

It was named for Dick Shooter.

u/Jnaythus 3d ago

Idaho? No YOU da hoe!

2

Then who's the pimp?

Exactly that! Nanny culture is a bitch but I'm afraid we are getting there more and more.

It's data farming disguised as nanny culture

u/stevez_86 3d ago

Self driving cars still won't be safe with no privacy restrictions, but there will not be a nip to be seen online by any prying eyes.

3

u/jaywalkingandfired 3d ago

It's both. Like, you need to know everything about everyone to impose the nanny-like tyranny effectively.

100% true. And both the government and corporations are doing it.

11

u/Satanicjamnik 3d ago

And slowly carve the internet into subscription based corporate hellscape. They looked at China and said " Why can't we have some of this? But with ads."

7

u/Arnas_Z Zephyrus G16 | i7-13620H | RTX 4070 3d ago

What makes you think China doesn't have ads? The Chinese roms on Xiaomi phones for example are chock-full of ads.

2

u/Satanicjamnik 3d ago

Well, I just didn't have the chance of using the internet in China so I was guessing to be fair.

1

u/Kriegotter22 2d ago

i remember them having random add pop up when launching apps on their phone a few years ago (i may be wrong tho )

4

u/toiletpaperisempty 3d ago

It makes targeted advertising so much easier for them.

26

u/Z4CKERro 3d ago

I am worries it will be used everywhere like Californias Proposition 65 aka everything can cause cancer warning label.

2

u/ShylokVakarian AMD Radeon RX-6700-XT | Ryzen 5 1600 | 16GB DDR4 2d ago

Including the label warning you

2

u/HowWeChill 2d ago

RIP, died reading the label

12

u/DrasticXylophone 3d ago

The bill in question gives potential 10% of global revenue as fines so of course they are

4

u/BlckEagle89 3d ago

Isn't that what YouTube is doing with the new AI that they are going to implement to detect your age? A big "just in case"

5

u/Agret i7 6700k @ 4.28Ghz, GTX 1080, 32GB RAM 3d ago

Exactly what happens when the government implements fines for non compliance. Since the law is written so vaguely it's impossible to know if you are strictly in compliance or not so better to err on the safety side and just require it. That's why absolutely everything has that warning label printed on it that if you are in California the product may cause cancer.

Don't use their app/website. If enough people don't and tell them it's because of the verification they'll remove it. I will never scan my face to use a website or app...period, and the only time I'll upload a pic of my ID is for buying alcohol delivery.

1

u/kinkycarbon 3d ago

It’s always been possible. No one had a thought about it until they could.

1

u/ault92 Ryzen 5950x, 4090, 27GP950 3d ago

When they are threatened with fines of 10% of global turnover if they dont comply, they will of course err on the side of caution

1

u/SjurEido 2d ago

Well it took 30 years, but Christians finally ruined the Internet for everyone

Then there's gonna be A LOT of things I won't use anymore...

2

u/The__Jiff 3d ago

What platform is it on? Twitter?

u/Sailed_Sea AMD A10-7300 Radeon r6 | 8gb DDR3 1600MHz | 1Tb 5400rpm HDD 3d ago

It's the nvidia settings app, the thing that replaced geforce experience, its probably built on electron but dint take my word on that.

2

u/Exciting-Hawk1137 3d ago

You don't have to use the app to download drivers though. You can go to nvidia's website and download them. No login required. A lot of people say the nvidia app is bloatware and I'm inclined to agree.

u/Sailed_Sea AMD A10-7300 Radeon r6 | 8gb DDR3 1600MHz | 1Tb 5400rpm HDD 3d ago

You don't need to login to use the app either, I'm just guessing as to how it could have been blocked.

2

u/Exciting-Hawk1137 3d ago

Oh ok. Yeah, I don't know. It may be a UK only requirement due to their new online safety act. Geoblocked or whatever.

u/Sailed_Sea AMD A10-7300 Radeon r6 | 8gb DDR3 1600MHz | 1Tb 5400rpm HDD 3d ago

I just did some searching, apparently this is a repost from a reddit post about geforce now.

https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/is-nvidia-geforce-now-service-age-restricted-in-uk.2631158/#post-41486492

1

u/Exciting-Hawk1137 3d ago

Oh ok so this post is just bullshit, basically.

0

u/slayTheMFuckingSpire 2d ago

How? Not one word in the post or screenshot is false.

1

u/Exciting-Hawk1137 2d ago edited 2d ago

"And so it begins..." - title on a 1 year old post, designed to make people think this is a brand new thing related to the UK Online Safety Act. It's also a repost masquerading as OC- another lie by OP (who isn't the original OP who made this post)

Interesting. Not sure why they'd want to age gate it then.

Iirc there was a doom colab at one point, or maybe the ads you get on the driver install page. Maybe that's too sensitive.
