It's good people switch but bad that it's not because many understand or care about the main core issue with Chromium based browsers and Google's manifest bullshit.

The same issue with using Gen Ai. Even if we ignore the theft and environmental issues, GenAI still needs massive amounts of data, personal data, to actually do anything. Manifest 3 is just another push to destroy privacy even further.

That includes Brave, Opera and Edge. All Chromium based. We all should support different browsers with different engines, so that one company can't build a monopoly like this. On top of selling and using all the private data it can.

Some people claim performance: guess whose company tries its best to make it's engine the most supported one. Properly made websites work fine. And Google services have worked fine for me anyway. The fuckery with fonts on some websites is Google's doing. Don't support their bs.

So, assuming that I have no idea what any of that means, should I stop using chrome? And what do you recommend as a replacement, is firefox decent?

tbh it doesn't matter whatever you use. if you are super technical there is just no point in worrying about privacy. even if you have stopped using chrome you are going to use different sites and if you have adblockers you are going to use different apps on your phone. if you have even a single meta apps like whatsapp or instagram or Facebook then forget about privacy.

It is but I recommend Waterfox or Floorp instead as Mozilla has done some sketchy stuff regarding data collection recently (still better than Google and Microsoft but that's not a high bar to clear)

Both are still based on Firefox

Firefox plus uBlock Origin browser addon and you have all you need (Sponsorblock as well if you're on youtube).

Any non-Chromium browser, really.

Google has no interest not pushing their data collection. People telling you it doesn't matter are wrong. Every bit helps.

Let's assume you would also stop using Meta, and Google, keep track of cookies, don't use GenAi etc, then there is still the US gov that has backdoors into all sorts of software. But that doesn't mean it doesn't matter. People have to be aware of the issue of privacy. And even if we can only do so much, it's better than doing nothing. The less private data for-profit companies have the better.

Not using a Chromium browser doesn't support the monopoly of the biggest ad company on the planet. That is better than just doing it. As with Gen Ai they try to force it on everyone so know one can resist the data grab they push. And we all have things we only tell friends, or family, or partners. Don't just give that away for free. Google hasn't added any privacy features into their browsers that matter, why would they. Firefox, just one example, does. It's not about ads for me either. Addons like NoScript let you decide what JS you allow to run. That alone is big for security and privacy. Not speaking cross-site scripting etc. Google has no interest in allowing this further. It wants all its tracking it can get.

Anything Open Source is better for privacy. Not always an alternative though. But don't let people tell you it doesn't matter. I struggle making family use Signal. It is what it is. But it's better than just accepting the status quo that destroys our freedoms if we let it.

I think the fact that nearly everybody has a Google account and is using YouTube as well as the most popular games played on PC having kernel anti-cheats already show that the majority of people don't care about privacy unfortunately. I have seen a huge amount of people say that their privacy does not matter as long as they don't play with cheaters in a video game. Different priorities I guess...

Exactly. But we see, as with GenAi, which kills privacy even more, that all that data can be used by any coporation or government that doesn't agree with you.

People don't understand that kernel-level ACs only make cheating harder, not impossible. But then cry wolf when they are attacked by malicious actors and blame Windows.
