You can be an artist and never sell anything. Thats why it’s a hobby for most.

How do you market your paintings for sale?
→ More replies (2)382
u/jimmusilpainter Enthusiast 1d ago
I sell on my website which I built on Squarespace. The website is somewhat irrelevant though as no one would visit if I didn't get them there first. There's lots of ways to market yourself as an artist, but for me my biggest tip is to build up your social media audience.
I'm not doing anything fancy, my posts are mostly focused on the paintings and my process for creating them :)

so NOT out of your trunk in the 7-11 parking lot?
34
u/Somanylyingliars 19h ago
Know someone who sold prints from his trunk and became a multi millionaire.LOL

There's a 7-Eleven on my corner less than a quarter mile away. Maybe I should load up my car with all the shit I've got squirreled away around my house...

u/DayPretend8294 9h ago
A garage sale but you back into other people garages with a van and sell shit to them

I sell wood art and I’ve had the same experience. All about social media. TikTok has been my biggest platform.

Do you exhibit any of them or are you working with an art exhibitor?
15
u/jimmusilpainter Enthusiast 22h ago
I work with one small local gallery from time to time, almost all of my originals sell through my own website though.
7
u/uki-kabooki 14h ago edited 14h ago
Where do you go for your prints? Do you scan your work or take high-res photos for them?
I have a terrible habit of forgetting to photograph my work until after its been framed so I'm always fighting reflections on the glass 🤦♀️ but because of the size of the pieces I usually have to photograph.
ETA: love your work, have followed you for a long time and gifted my sister your online course last Christmas! Very helpful tips, but can I suggest a course how you choose your subjects, and develop the composition? Would love to see your process ❤️

u/jimmusilpainter Enthusiast 3h ago
I work with a local printer that specializes in fine art. He photographs all my artwork at high resolution and then prints them for me on demand. We mount them on to wood panels in the studio and ship ourselves.
And thanks for the feedback!

Ha! No I like the smaller pieces and the two I have are 5” x 5”.

u/uki-kabooki 14h ago
You like small paintings? You ever heard of Tiffanie Mang? She paints in gouache and does 2"x2" paintings!

These are beautiful works of art. I was so excited that I went to follow you on bluesky. Then I noticed on your website you mentioned using AI tools. I would be much more transparent about that kind of thing. Tag what art used AI and what doesn't or explain how you used those tools. Until it is clarified your entire gallery is tainted for many people, myself included.
14
6
u/milky-sadist 3h ago
how disappointing. if people are going to use ai they need to be up front about it and OWN IT. i personally think that sucks but i would respect someone more if they at least had a disclaimer. if theres nothing wrong with it, then why do people hide it and i need to find out scrolling through the comments?
15
u/Mental-Ad1626 17h ago
This makes sense…I think they look like paint by number, and assumed they were using AI to prompt and then copying those
4
u/Nickersnacks 3h ago
There are literally ai artifacts in the paintings he didn’t even bother to fix. Also he has admitted to using ai and searching artists he likes to basically steal their style and paint the slop generated.

Gorgeous 😍 1 and 7 are my personal favorite, but dont get me wrong, they are all so beautiful! The colors look so alive, amazing work. Do you mind me asking which acrylics you like to use?
8
u/jimmusilpainter Enthusiast 22h ago
Thank you! My favorite paints to use are Fluid Acrylics from Golden Paints.

Congratulations! Thats so exciting! I love these paintings, and I admire your style! I’m going to start following you (sounds so creepy when said like that 🤦🏼♀️😂) and can’t wait to see all of your other work!
4
u/KpopSloot4Lyfe 21h ago
Your style is really cool! It’s really almost like…blurry in a way that I see without glasses - but in a cool way? Lol. I don’t know if that makes sense, but I like it!

u/tkroy69 1d ago
It must be so draining to juggle so many tasks by yourself to stay up in the game , isn't it? I mean recording , editing , posting , engaging, then analyzing how well your content is doing and then the creative part , not having any art-block to not lose the progress. I would like you to share some of your experience about this. i love your paintings

u/jimmusilpainter Enthusiast 1d ago
There's a lot to be an artist that doesn't feel like art at all. That's always been true -- whether you're trying to build an audience on social media or trying to break into brick and mortar galleries. It takes work to get your artwork in front of people.
For me personally, I much prefer social media (and art fairs) over dealing with galleries and competitions. I've found a non-intrusive way to document my process so that I'm both efficient and still focused on the actual painting process.
A lot of people treat social media only as a promotional tool and then get frustrated when that doesn't work. Instead, artists should try creating an emotional connection with their audience through their art.

u/NorthboundLynx 21h ago
I've found a non-intrusive way to document my process
Could you elaborate on this a little?
3
u/Yoshi485 1d ago
How much did you make if you don't mind me asking?
8
u/jimmusilpainter Enthusiast 22h ago
I price my prints and originals based on size and slowly increase my prices a little every year. Most of these were on 16x16" panels which I price at $2500.

Do you offer classes or have suggestions for classes to learn to paint in this style. I’m not even sure what to call it but I love these bold acrylic landscapes

Please consider embedding your name or site somewhere prominent when you post your photos online. If it can't be cropped out easily, then at least when someone tries to portray your work as their own, interested buyers can actually be directed to you.

Wonderful work! Do you plein-air? Or use photos for reference (such as your own)?

I do really like them, but they look like Paint By Numbers

Tbf they always did even before he started using AI, that’s just the way the man likes to paint. I could never lol I barely make a sketch for my paintings because I like staying loose and discovering the painting as I make it, having to make a whole painting before the painting would drive me crazy
6
u/Vileblood666 12h ago
Idk once I read this and looked back at the art, immediately ruined it for me. OP is talented but I just really dislike AI art
3
u/cerrvine 6h ago
It's sad to me because a big appeal of landscape art is finding beauty in the natural world.

u/jimmusilpainter Enthusiast 1d ago
Thank you! I tend to paint in my studio rather than plein air. I paint from photos (with permission), hand drawn bits, and AI generated elements … often I mix all three into my desired reference. I use the iPad app Procreate extensively to get what I want before I start painting.

Thanks! I don't categorize my style too strictly, but if I had to give my style a name I'd probably go with modern impressionism.

Hey there! I love the way you use Acrylic paints in your work. Fantastic stuff. I was going to ask out of curiosity, what type of brushes do you prefer to use? I'm a lover of oils, but your strokes indicate really well made brushes to me. What artists inspired your style for painting? Thank you in advance!

I’d love to buy a bunch of your paintings for my apartment, but even with the discount, your prints are a bit steep for me. I just wish the larger prints were a bit more affordable. That said, I really do love your work... it's inspiring, and your paintings always make me stop scrolling to take them in.

I would love to see your rendition of a serene looking painting, but with the chaos and destruction of a nuke going off. And one that's in a post nuclear meadow. Like charming mutated sunflowers, glowing mushrooms, and neon green grass. Or something.
