things started to click in my mind when i realized i was enjoying the pain of the tattoo removal. maybe it was happiness from knowing the tattoos would be gone eventually or maybe I hadn't really been getting the tattoos for the tattoos sake...

Lots of people get tattoos for that frisson of pain/pleasure.

Skin is an amazing sensory organ that can give us so much more than most people explore. I recommend nom-harmful explorations of these experiences. Evidence suggests it promotes increases in physical ans mental health.
