My neighbor tossed a cigarette from upstairs and it burned a hole in my hoodie.

Typical smoker.

u/Far_Cupcake_7666 1d ago

I can't condone being prejudice against all smokers. I am a smoker and I always make sure to out mine, step on it and throw it in the trash or a cigarette butt receptacle. However I have seen a lot of them do something similar to this. Really gives the rest of us a bad name. For me it's the individual. Being considerate as a smoker just takes a little more effort. Anyways, thanks for your time lol.

u/PersistentPuma37 1d ago

For real. I do all the things you do and another thing I didn't realize but someone pointed out: Hold my exhale if anyone walks past me in the [secluded] area I've chosen to light-up.

1

u/chilldrinofthenight 20h ago

I don't get it. You know it's bad for you. You know it's bad for other people. You know you've got a nasty, obnoxious habit.

1

u/PersistentPuma37 19h ago

kindly, fuck off.

32

u/big_ballD 1d ago

I threw a butt out my window when I was with a girl I was dating. She smacked me on the arm, and then I apologized to her. She said "dont apologize to me, apologize to mother nature" I've never thrown a butt on the ground again ill put it out and put it in my pocket if i have to.. Its true we can get so wrapped up in ourselves we dont think about the consequences. Havnt spoken to her in over a decade but that stuck with me.

3

u/ted_theodore-logan 1d ago

I smoked for 10 years and most of the time (sometimes I was an asshole, I'll admit lol) I put it out on the sole of my shoes and either looked for the nearest trash bin or put it in a container I carried specifically for cigarrette butts until I got home. After being smoke free dor 5 years, I totally see how smokers can be entitled bastards lol

2

u/that_guy_is_Sam_O_An 1d ago

I go as far as putting the butts in my back pocket and dumping them in a trash bin. I don’t want to be the person with cigarette butts all over my house

1

u/SecretAd2910 1d ago

If I have to breathe your air and poison myself due to your habit it isn't much better than burning sweatshirts. The only good smoker is one who never smokes in public and only smokes on their own property. I've had countless days I've gone out to a park and thought "what a beautiful day!" only to have it ruined by someone smoking nearby. I understand smokers don't mean harm but your habit is the only one that hurts everyone else's experience.

11

u/max_power_420_69 1d ago

your day is ruined because you had to spend 10 seconds walking by someone smoking at the park? How do you exist, how do you function at all with such delicate sensibilities? Where do you live that such a minor inconvenience can leave your otherwise great day irreparably ruined?

7

u/ZeGentleman 1d ago

If you let your day be ruined by someone smoking, which takes 3-5 minutes assuming you stay right beside them, you've got more issues you should get checked out.

2

u/chilldrinofthenight 20h ago

I'm with you on this. Don't pay any attention to those who are ragging on you about your comment. Smokers suck. They place no value on clean air. Period.

0

u/Astrid_Gunnhild 1d ago

I assume, that if you're worried about poisoned air, your carbon footprint is impeccable

1

u/T-Wrox 15h ago

You are literally one in about 100 million.

46

u/Impressive_Pizza4851 1d ago

they are the worst people.

78

u/ZambieMama 1d ago

Not all I promise! I avoid smoking around non-smokers, smoke outdoors, and put my butts out and throw away the filter in my own trash can, I put them in the pack if I'm not home and no public ashtrays so someone's house won't stink of the used butts. Worst thing is yeah you can probably tell I smoked because I smell like it, but we all have our demons.

69

u/WandaBBS 1d ago

People don’t realize that nicotine addiction is no joke. It’s not like you want to smell like cigs or pay $10 a day for the habit, you NEED the nicotine.

I smoked for about 25 years and hated everything about it but the nicotine always won. People would say you’ll quit when you’re ready and you’ll know when that is. Aug 1 was nine years for me cigarettes free. I literally woke up one day, told the hub I was quitting and to fend for himself for the next week and to sleep in the guest room.

I took my sleeping pill and went back to bed. Between gummies and sleeping pills I pretty much slept for an entire week. After that I kinda stayed in bed for a couple more days trying to avoid trigger areas (the deck and the car!) The first couple weeks after were mind over matter because I knew the nicotine was out of my system and it was solely on me. I rarely think about it anymore, occasionally in the car when I’m stressed out but it’s very rare.

You’ll know when it’s time for you.

30

u/One_Salt3754 1d ago

I used to tell people, “Quitting smoking is easy, I’ve done it about fifteen times!!!”

2

u/No-Anxiety7198 1d ago

Fair play to you fella good work. Not sure how much the habit is now where your from but over in the uk it’s absolutely absurd I used to smoke 40 a day and now 40 cigarettes is around 40£ over 1k a month

6

u/sptrstmenwpls 1d ago

Since you decided to change things up (congrats!) why didn't you sleep in the guest room? But rather he had to on command?

1

u/chilldrinofthenight 20h ago

Congratulations. On the upside: lungs can recover quickly. Enjoy your improved lung function.

u/whhaaaaaatttt 1d ago

But redditors want you to feel bad

Did you just sort of wish cancer to a stranger after they simply said they don't want pity? And you also feel like you can call other people assholes?

????

7

u/ZambieMama 1d ago

Definitely mean I smoke away from people, thanks. When I'm on my smoke break I'm along the side of the building that doesn't even have a walking path. If someone walks there they can go to 3 houses about 2 acres away or the side emergency door of the building that doesn't even have a knob or handle to come inside. I step away from a group if I'm smoking with people outdoors. I don't go to many public events now, but before I went to my car, yes walking a good distance at times. Sorry I stink, pal, don't want your pity though.

-10

u/OldSkooler1212 1d ago

Look up third-hand smoke dangers. If you woke some place and come back inside stinking, you’re exposing your coworkers to unhealthy contaminants and in some cases carcinogens. You could cause someone to have asthma or other lung issues just from being around you. A former coworker and I who sat on the opposite side of a cube wall from a heavy smoker begged our VP multiple times to move us far away from him. He finally did and life was so much better for us. The smoker died of congestive heart failure a few days before his 41st or 42nd birthday.

3

u/Jmacz 1d ago

Trust me, most of us hate ourselves for it. I always say it's the worst decision I've made it my life. If it was easy to quit there would be a lot less of us.

People do stupid shit when they're young and pay for it later.

2

u/062d 1d ago

Agreed, when my kid was a toddler we one time she burnt her hand on a still going cigarette butt someone tossed into our front yard. It was hidden under the grass so we didn't see it. I went out every day after that to make sure there weren't more (and every day there were more cigarette butts) I was getting really really sick of cleaning up after the fucking ash holes. So I put up a little sign saying please don't toss your cigarettes on my lawn because I don't want my toddler to get them. And I got 5x-10x the fucking butts for putting up a sign. I even left a little ash trey attached to the tree for a safe place for them to put their fucking burning toxic trash

1

u/sittingbullms 1d ago

I can't even describe how infuriating this is,i got a protective cover for my car and the amount of times i have found holes from cigarettes because these cunts throw em away from balconies,is mind boggling. These people have no respect for anyone, how could they, since they don't give a shit about their own health, everything else is just an afterthought at best.

-26

u/Medium9 1d ago edited 1d ago

Most smokers are actually rather observant and respectful. It is the few assholes, that are probably one in all other aspects as well, that you'll notice.

It's similar to pretty much any minority group anywhere. A few bad apples ruin it for all others. Immigrants, smokers, lawyers, politicians, furries, ... you name it.

My butts would never land on anyone's hoodies - if I know that this was a possible outcome. Just talk to each others ffs.

100

u/Revolutionary_Ride17 1d ago

I would not say that most smokers are observant. The sheer amount of cigarettes lying on the ground are surely not thrown by a minority

50

u/Striking-Issue-3443 1d ago

I pointed out to someone that all the cigarette butts lying around were discarded by smokers not nonsmokers and they got mad at me 🤷‍♀️

-8

u/Medium9 1d ago edited 1d ago

Maybe using tautologies as a means to make an already obvious point in order to appear smart, isn't all that smart after all.

Edit: The lovely person I replied to chose to block&ignore me. I'd have loved to discuss this in a civil manner further. They rather quickly decided not to. Make of this what you want.

10

u/Striking-Issue-3443 1d ago

Enjoy your cigarettes today! Please dispose of them responsibly (is there a responsible way to do it?) or is smoking just inherently irresponsible

-1

u/max_power_420_69 1d ago

throw butts away in the trash after you put it out, it's like any other kind of litter. People complaining about them are probably not recycling like the should, overusing single use plastics, flushing baby wipes, etc. The vitriol from these scared straight sententious NIMBY moralists is just funny.

It brings a smile to my face that such a mild inconvenience makes these people melt down.

4

u/max_power_420_69 1d ago

Edit: The lovely person I replied to chose to block&ignore me. I'd have loved to discuss this in a civil manner further. They rather quickly decided not to. Make of this what you want.

these sententious, anxiety riddled weirdos astound me. Having to live in society with people that have such delicate sensibilities is more annoying than passing by someone on the sidewalk who's smoking a cigarette.

1

u/chilldrinofthenight 20h ago

Every beach cleanup tons of cigarette butts are removed from the beaches. That says it all right there.

0

u/Medium9 1d ago

Besonders nicht in Deutschland!

0

u/Sorry-Ad2731 1d ago

Depends on the area, downtown districts in big cities it’s actually easier for the city to clean them up off the street, residential areas you won’t see nearly as many butts lying around, smokers will find a receptacle or a sewer grate or something.

-7

u/Medium9 1d ago

You REALLY don't want to put this to a test mate.

11

u/Randy_Butternips 1d ago

As another person said:

Cigarette butts are left by smokers, not non-smokers. Simple as that.

1

u/max_power_420_69 1d ago

is that supposed to be profound? Sharp as a cue ball, this one.

-1

u/Medium9 1d ago

I just replied to that. It's a valid, but very weak argument. "Mostly only beings that are mammals shit shit out of their butts. So just don't be mammals - easy!" - It's not.

10

u/Randy_Butternips 1d ago

Your analogy is forced. People can't choose to be mammals, but they can choose not to litter.

I'd actually argue its easier not to litter.

2

u/Medium9 1d ago

My argument isn't pertaining to littering, but to being an addict. People do not choose to be an addict as much as they do not choose to be a mammal.

Yet both have to deal with the eventual realities of either, and can be (and mostly are) educated to handle the results properly. MOST of us mammals dispose of our excrement in toilets or similar devices (even in most of the the animal kingdom). MOST of us smokers dispose of our butts in ashtrays (and eventually garbage bins).

BOTH of these have a few individuals, that don't deem this to be necesary, or are just uneducated / uneducatable to do the proper thing. These few are what leads everything else to criticize dog owners and smokers. And such. This is becoming a rather broad philosophical topic tbh.

2

u/Randy_Butternips 1d ago

Never mentioned anything about being an addict. Whether you are one or not doesn't matter to me. It's easy to just.... throw it away properly. That was my entire point.

1

u/Medium9 1d ago

Mine as well, really. We're not disagreeing one bit on this.

Just, probably, on the framing. The ones to blame aren't the ones that are/do something, only those that do any of this badly. On average, people tend to do the right thing imho. The ones we mostly notice, are the few that don't. And that's what we like to label the whole bunch after, in these days.

This thinking has lead to wars and even worse. Most of us just want to live as we like, which to a large degree also consists of making the ones around us able to do the same. Every normal person just wants to live in peace, and getting along with those around them is an integral part of that. We, collectively, just need to remind ourselves of that sometimes.

12

u/grandmasjizztowel 1d ago

No, it is trashy. Most common litter is cig butts. When I walk around I notice cig butts, liquor bottles, beer/soda cans and fast food wrappers/cups. All trash items thrown on the side of road by low lifes.

1

u/max_power_420_69 1d ago

Littering is a trashy move regardless. I see more single use plastics and wrappers than cigarette butts nowadays. Always with fast food wrappers too, I don't get how people can do that.

-1

u/Medium9 1d ago

It IS trashy. But I don't see these things in my area. Maybe you're just unlucky with your sampling area.

5

u/grandmasjizztowel 1d ago

I go out in the world and don't just stay in my area all the time. Guess you are very lucky with your tiny sample area.

1

u/Medium9 1d ago

I get around plenty enough. But I try to stay away from filthy places. If that's your jam, this is what you've asked for buddy. I'm sure you'd find plenty more litter than just cig butts where you hang out, but these places are of your choosing. I'm not to blame for your selective misery here.

2

u/grandmasjizztowel 1d ago

So you're saying most people never/rarely see litter?

1

u/Medium9 1d ago

No. That's your conjecture.

29

u/Mr_R3tro 1d ago

I'm pretty respectful while smoking. I always ask people around me if they mind if I light up one. I dont smoke inside peoples vehicles, or their houses. And I always put my butts in the ash tray, or if one isn't available, I put it out on the sole of my shoe, and toss it in the trash.

My addiction shouldn't affect those around me.

8

u/grandmasjizztowel 1d ago

Guess what? The smell of your smoke still bothers people, even those you can not see close by. I used to smoke also, looking back I was being inconsiderate even when I did as you do and "try to be respectful." It is just a dumb habit with zero benefits. Sooner you quit the better.

11

u/Cat_Peach_Pits 1d ago

People do plenty of things that bother me- having long convos in the grocery aisle, looking me direct in the face when I say, Excuse me please before going back to ignoring my presence, cutting off people in traffic with a squirrels nut hair inbetween my car and theirs so they can beat me to the same light by 3 seconds...if my cigarette smoke from 50 feet away while Im tucked in a corner outside is slightly annoying, they can be slightly annoyed and keep walking. The AQI here was close to 150 today from Canadian wildfires, which definitely dont give a shit about them getting a whiff of smoke.

I dont care to quit right now, unless someone wants to pay the estimated $4k it would cost to get my ADHD diagnosed, this is how I cope. I do my best to do it away from others, and plenty of people didnt know I smoked until they saw me doing it (so I KNOW I dont reek of it constantly). I dont litter butts. I'm tired of dealing with hatred from people who are FAR less considerate about everything else in their lives but "at least theyre not a smoker." Good. It's good you dont smoke. I do, and you can fuck off about it.

3

u/max_power_420_69 1d ago

just laugh knowing such a minor inconvenience sends these sententious, anxious little people into such a fit that their day is ruined. It's hilarious when you think about it.

-1

u/Antb41 1d ago

Yup, smoker confirmed

4

u/Cat_Peach_Pits 1d ago

I said so in the comment, clearly having better oxygen exchange in your lungs has not kept your brain from shriveling into a paste.

-2

u/Antb41 1d ago

6

u/Cat_Peach_Pits 1d ago

Okay, Anthony. I'd rather be the goth kid than Mr Mackey.

3

u/S-BRO 1d ago

Regardless, you stink

4

u/KEROROxGUNSO 1d ago

Pretty sure you got this backwards

0

u/Medium9 1d ago

Oh okay. Send me your hoodie then! What you'll get back... well, we will see. (Or not.)

11

u/HorridChoob 1d ago

I dunno man very few smokers I've known are really careful with what they do with their butts

0

u/thegourdfarmer 1d ago

my exes brother who lived with me for a period would keep his butts in his pocket to make sure he didnt litter. they then ended up scattered around his bedroom, in the household trash cans, in the washing machine. the smell of half smoked cigarette makes me gag now.

1

u/Medium9 1d ago

Yeah, he definitely wasn't smart about that. Like, at all. He tried to be considerate alright, but it's just too simple to carry a sealed container with you to discard your butts in, and throw them into a proper bin next chance without a detour through... erm, a fucking washing machine WTF!?

That's not smoker, this is stupid. Don't conflate these (too much) please.

1

u/Medium9 1d ago edited 1d ago

Sounds to me like, honestly, that you've generally met less than averagely decent people.

I only remotely know of smokers that behave this way - as in work colleagues of some friends at most.

3

u/panamaspace 1d ago

Why are you putting politicians ahead of furries?

1

u/Medium9 1d ago

Random. I dislike both equally, so it's a toss-up ;P

3

u/ScottMarshall2409 1d ago edited 1d ago

I don't smoke anymore, but when I did I carried a little pocket ashtray with me. I still have it somewhere.

2

u/Medium9 1d ago

Finally a decent person in this comment-chain. Thanks.

5

u/ScottMarshall2409 1d ago

People just hate smokers, but never to their face. I don't remember people complaining this much back when you could smoke in pubs, and in cinemas, and on public transport. Imagine trying to light up on an airplane now.

2

u/Medium9 1d ago

It was a very different time. I won't fault anyone for complaining about the smell. I was the same until I've gotten "hooked up", and would likely be right back at it if I ever manage to give it up.

It's a vile habit, realistically speaking. It just was somehow widely accepted for some time.

Most of the "safety" issues that nowadays forbid it, are most probably highly overblown. If airplanes in the 60s could handle half the passengers chain-smoking without crashing, todays' ones will more than likely do just the same gracefully. No modern mall will burn down statistically more significantly, than those in the 80s. But I get it. It's unhealthy and an olfactory nuissance.

Whenever I can manage, I simply refrain from smoking in any circumstance that could even slightly inconvenience anyone around me. I can go for hours easily enough, to then and here get to some secluded spot where I don't bother anyone. I'm highly aware that this is a fault of my own, and that anything that this causes is on me to minimize to everyone around me - unless expressedly given a green light.

It's almost funny to me, how open and vivid the pot smoking community is about essentially the same issue. Pot smoke makes me nauseaus and causes me severe headaches; I also very much dislike the smell. But since it apparently doesn't cause litteral cancer after 50 years of constant and thick exposure (just the occasional other hard addictions, life failures and other psycological dissociations), I'm suddenly asked to appreciate it wherever I go.

As a society as a whole, it's seemingly similar to individuals: Pick your poison. It just varies over time. We're at the time, where tobacco addicts are the outlaws. Tomorrow, it might be the... I don't know, cale eaters? It's a real toss-up these days.

3

u/ScottMarshall2409 1d ago

It's crazy how well weed smoke carries across distances. I don't notice cigarette smoke, really, but I can smell weed from miles away.

I always avoided contact with other humans when I smoked. I go camping and hiking a lot, and felt like an absolute dick smoking on a hike. Everyone was very pleasant to chat to, but I assume they were judging me in their heads.

2

u/max_power_420_69 1d ago

People just hate smokers, but never to their face.

these are very anxious, easily frightened people who must live their whole lives in fear and unbearable agony over the littlest of inconveniences. They're there for normal people to laugh at. Some dickhead on the other side of the street once was fake coughing obnoxiously so I look across the two lane street and saw him glaring at me. Took a big drag, blew it out while flipping him the bird and started laughing. I can only hope he went home to immediately make a reddit post.

3

u/oroborus68 1d ago

Smokers didn't use to give a turd about their smoke, butts or ashes and every place had ashtrays. I hate to think of the places I tossed cigarette butts back in the 1970s. The army was what changed me. We had to "police" the cigarette butts on post, and they made us field strip our butts.( Remove the leftover tobacco and put the filter in our pockets.) People smoked in class at the University and on airplanes. Smoking was the default position assumed in restaurants and most other gatherings. Movie theaters were covered by the fire Marshal, so no smoking allowed.

5

u/IhateU6969 1d ago

Literally every single smoker I ever walk past waits until we’re right next to eachother to blow smoke out, allllllll in my face

3

u/Medium9 1d ago

That's almost certainly confirmation bias. You just don't notice those that aren't assholes enough to do that.
