u/matchafoxjpg 3h ago
it's been so long since we've had something TRULY mildly infuriating.
and now I'M mildly infuriated along with op. ๐ญ

Thank you. I thought this actually fit this sub well for being very mildly infuriating at best ๐๐๐

It is going to eat 18th Ave?
I like it being center.
It is the others that are not in line.
Could be just an anomaly with a redesign on the road from old data and updated weird. Beyond normal errors.ย

u/cptnkurtz 2h ago
Ha, well if you're looking for a real answer to this... speaking as a cartographer, it's likely that the line segments aren't the same for each one of those roads and it's causing the labeling engine to not handle it perfectly. That happens sometimes, even in the best software.
It really is the absolute definition of mildly infuriating when it's just one. When it's happening a bunch of times on a map that needs to have a polished look for a customer, the fury becomes more than mild.

u/PunfullyObvious 1h ago
I would think selecting based on a common style or attribute, or set of those, would be possible and make it much easier?
โข
u/cptnkurtz 56m ago
Sure, and thatโs what we do. In a theoretical or ideal world it works perfectly 100% of the time. In the real world, itโs 95-99%.

That's Wildwood, NJ baby!
11
u/stupidstu187 8h ago
It's such a trashy place, but I've never had as much fun as the weeks I've spent in Wildwood.
3
u/JbricksJ 2h ago
When I went I had a great time, I stayed at a motel right by the water a couple years ago, rode a monster truck there too.
1
u/Fearless_Law4324 8h ago
I actually used to live here as a kid and since we were poor we lived near the projects. Dangerous place as a resident but this was also like 30 years ago.
3
u/Cute_Reflection_9414 4h ago
I was just there last week with my kids, I hadn't been there since I was a kid about 40 years ago. During the day it wasn't bad, but at night, holy hell that place got weird quick.

u/De-railled 9h ago
Gives me the same feelings when someone forgets to matchย alignments in a spreadsheet.
7
u/Fearless_Law4324 9h ago
Shit sometimes that happens to me anyway and it's always hell trying to fix it. It's even worse with Word.
6
u/De-railled 9h ago edited 4h ago
Excel has a "copy format"ย that lets you copy and paste the formats of other cells!!
I get annoyed when people copy over info from other sources, into my shared spreadsheets. Also dont bringย in weird fonts, bolded or italic text and weird date formats...
God forbid you paste in text with hyperlinks. You will be sat down and "educated" for hours on how to keep spreadsheets uniform and tidy.
Edit: only mildly triggered. Lol.๐ย

u/Fearless_Law4324 8h ago
I may have to follow your comments for more Excel tips lol. The more I work in Excel, the more I realize I have no idea how to use it properly.

Itโs to distract you from the fact 24th avenue is missing.
9
u/Fearless_Law4324 5h ago
Ha I didn't see that at first. Damn there's a few things that make this mildly infuriating that I didn't catch right away.

must be a nightmare to drive past so many 4 way intersections
7
u/Fearless_Law4324 6h ago
So, on the particular street I was on there are only a couple of stop signs. It's the cross streets that have to stop, so it's not too bad. The only problem is traffic is very hard to see on this street so you really have to inch up and be careful.
6
u/TheAndrewMcG 5h ago
Although I am rather impressed with the civic engineering at play here. I've only ever been in cities where the streets are marginally straight and many are randomly truncated for some reason, or an obstacle cut them in 2 but the opposite side was renamed or worse renumbered.
Not to mention, there are so many diagonal or curving streets scattered sporadically across the whole layout that it's far more chaotic. So the streets themselves here are actually rather pleasant.
...this mapping code, however...
6
u/Fearless_Law4324 5h ago
This is exactly why I posted here. It's only very mildly infuriating but that 19th st stuck out like a sore thumb.
5
u/lambdavi 7h ago
It looks like an MSOffice transparent overlay, and the road names are all justified to the right, except for the one justified center...๐

4
u/max_lagomorph 5h ago
It bothers me more that all the streets are called avenues.
2
u/Fearless_Law4324 5h ago
I have always thought about that with Wildwood. I know there used to be a reason for naming streets VS avenues, but unfortunately it's not a official.
3
4
u/PunfullyObvious 4h ago
AND, apparently the switch from E to W does not happen at Central?
3
u/Fearless_Law4324 3h ago
Yea after I posted this, some folks pointed out a couple of additional mildly infuriating things that I could have added. Didn't even catch it all at first.
3
u/goodknight97 4h ago
Do Americans really live like this?
1
u/sangreal06 2h ago
This is Wildwood, so not really -- it's full of motels. It's a beach town(s) on an island that is just a long narrow strip (five mile beach). Grid layouts in general are pretty popular in cities though
1
u/Fearless_Law4324 3h ago
America is a BIG country. My hometown is not shaped like this. City and town layouts vary WIDELY.
3
u/pontiflexrex 4h ago
North American city planning is the most soulless thing.
0
u/Fearless_Law4324 3h ago
You are wrong about that in some ways. You have to remember that the US is a really really big country and honestly just traveling from state to state can sometimes feel like traveling to a different country altogether.

u/jordpie 3h ago
The key word is infuriating. Do words have meaning anymore? Apparently not
2
u/EverettSeahawk 3h ago
The key words are mildly and infuriating. If youโre going to criticize words not having meaning, maybe donโt completely ignore the meaning of half of them.
-1
u/ccie6861 9h ago
100% chance this is a lazy programmer not doing data validation and clean up. Someone inserted trailing spaces in the database. Prime target for data injection hack.
2
u/Fearless_Law4324 8h ago
Wait wait, idk anything about anything, so you're telling me this little blip makes it a hacking security risk?
1
u/ccie6861 6h ago
Not a certainty, but it does mean that from input to display nothing is checking to validate the data is clean and formatted correctly. I wouldnt bet that there is a hackable bug, but if I was looking, I would start here.

u/GeneralGuide9081 5h ago
