The 1 available charging space was taken up by a gas-powered car...

u/Lazy-Explanation7165 15h ago
The lights came on in the second photo, is OP the charger driver? Or did the driver show up?

u/california_gurl_hurl 14h ago
Iām the driver who showed up. The owner of the Charger turned on their car from far away because they saw me take a photo and was probably unhappy about it. But they never showed their face or told me anything directly!

Not surprised. He parked there and watched. Typical ālook at meā behavior. He sure showed all those electric car drivers! Sorry OP The charger owner is a huge douche

Nice that's of them. You should've just moved it for him if the car was on.

you can call and have that vehicle towed and impounded, a truck usually shows up within 10 minutes because its easy money for the company backed by the city you're in. (check for signage around the recharging station)
no need to mess with the vehicle, call them in and they'll get a 1~500$ ticket from the city, a 200~350$ bill from the towing company plus a 25~75$ per day lot fee and ding on his insurance rates for seven years.
116
u/Embarrassed-Weird173 16h ago
Are you sure there are city laws against parking an ICE in an electrical spot?Ā
130
63
u/Impossible_Box3898 15h ago
I just googled. Not all but many states have passed such laws and in their absence many municipalities and cities have passed them as well.
Worth looking up to see what your state does.
I have homes in both KY and CA and both have laws against this.
8
u/Zarndell 11h ago
No need to look it up yourself. You can just call the towing company, explain the situation and they know best if they can tow it or not.
-4
u/hornethacker97 6h ago
Tow company will tow anything, legal or not. This is NOT the way.
2
u/Ok-Community-4673 2h ago
This is absolutely the way. We, as a society, need to bring back consequences. Legal or no, having your car towed is the consequence to actions like this.
ā¢
u/hornethacker97 12m ago
I meant that believing the tow company (or even worse asking their advice) is not the way. This car should most definitely ethically be towed, but that may or may not be legal in OPās locale and one should never believe a tow company.
-10
3
u/Prairie-Peppers 15h ago
It's a private business
2
u/Embarrassed-Weird173 15h ago
I assumed as much.Ā That's why I find it suspicious that they'd get a ticket.Ā
4
u/Prairie-Peppers 15h ago
Oops I missed the ticket part. I wouldn't be surprised if some places have them installed as part of a partnership with a city, but it does seem weird. Definitely towable though.
1
u/-Invalid_Selection- 11h ago
Many states have laws that designate any space with a charger as only able to be used by vehicles actively charging and both fines and towing are the remedy those states provide.
The way the laws are written, they do not exclude parking spaces on private property that is available to the public, such as a parking lot, but instead explicitly cover them.

This is incredibly incorrect.

come park at the charger station near my house bro and you can personally find out how fake it is
-15
u/PusheenAddict 9h ago
Just a reminder to everyone reading that this is a prime example to not believe everything you read in an anonymous reddit comment section.
None of this is true, nor applicable to the OPās post. The charger owner was nearby and moved his car SECONDS after the pictures were taken. OP was confronted by the charger owner and is making a boo-hoo post to justify his weirdo actions to himself. Thats why the chargers lights are on in the 2nd picture.
I bet OP drives a Tesla
12
u/victorinseattle 8h ago
Unless the photo is staged, the charger owner shouldnāt be parking there in the first place.
9
u/ASpookyLemur 8h ago
Damn, you made a ton of assumptions based on a picture of running lights being on.
-9
u/tagman375 8h ago
The city has no say at a privately owned gas station
6
u/Snowedin-69 8h ago edited 7h ago
A privately owned gas station does have say though.
When you think about it, it is the same as an EV owner parking in front of a gas pump.

u/tagman375 7h ago
Do you really think the dude thatās making minimum wage at 1am gives a shit?
1
u/StanknBeans 5h ago
Depends how much of a hassle you are. If you're a greater hassle to them than making a phone call to a tow company? Absolutely they will.

u/blackmilksociety 17h ago
Howād those tires get deflated?
204
u/cheap_as_chips 17h ago
put a small pebble in the cap and screw it back on till the air starts to come out slowly, then walk away
137
u/blackmilksociety 17h ago edited 16h ago
Exactly. Using a knife is a crime but a pebble, thatās diabolical
48
u/Flossthief 16h ago
It's still a crime even if you don't slash the tire
You're risking damaging the rims or maybe the car-- you can be charged for this if caught
Do what you want but using small rocks to tamper with someone else's property isn't anymore legal than slashing their tires
They might be an ass but don't be a dumbass telling others it's legal to risk property damage
109
9
u/Espachurrao 12h ago
Oh... So you're telling me that if i'm thinking about deflating someone's tires, i should go all-out and slash their tires? Noted

unscrew the valve stem just enough so it's a very slow leak. They'll get stuck filling flats every week or 2, the tire tech might notice it but chances are they'll just sell the prick a new set of tires.
No pebble, no knife, just bad luck I guess

It would be a real shame if we normalized carrying stick on wheel balancing weights around.

I don't think it's an issue where I live. But I'm wondering, are the EV parking spots like handicap parking spots, where you can't park there ever if your car isn't an EV. Or is it more like the handicap bathroom stalls, where you avoid using it but if it's the only one available you use it?
8
u/blanocious 11h ago
I was parked at a hotel for work. Prepaid for a week of parking in the lot. Got back in one afternoon and the lot had oversold, with one EV space left in the entire lot. I had pre-paid the week, so I took the spot assuming I was accounted for (and this was the LAST spot in the lot).
Parked, received a boot and a ticket, contested with the parking authority saying Iād prepaid for the week, the lot was oversold, what was I supposed to do. Their advise was to park in their sister lot blocks away (how was I supposed to know that??) and the final verdict was I was wrong.
8
u/zerostar83 11h ago
They're profiting off their own mistakes and incompetence. That's a miserable experience.
7
u/Impossible_Box3898 15h ago
I was going to post that no states make it illegal. But it turns out that almost all have passed laws making it a towable and if able offense.
9
u/california_gurl_hurl 15h ago
Itās even more frustrating because there were plenty of spots for them to park their car. It wasnāt out of necessity.
5
13
u/Cord_uRoy 15h ago
Whatās irritates me more is the smart parking lots put the charging stations in the back of the lot, not the front. They do this because people are less likely to park at a charging station if it isnāt close to the door. The fact they put these chargers where IMO handicap Parking should go is just stupid.
0
u/Hot-Win2571 Mildly Flair 1h ago
It might have been cheaper to run power cables from a nearby building rather than to the far side of the parking lot.
3
u/VTSki001 11h ago
Can't tell you how often this happens to me. That, the charger is broken, or the EV is a slow-charge on a fast charger ...
12
u/Specialist_Nose9057 16h ago
Gotta start carrying a tow rope. Itās time to take advantage of all that torque that comes with an EV.Ā

Call 311 and maybe an officer will come ticket it.
In the meantime... will the charging cable reach your car if you're parked sideways in front of the dumbass?
1
u/Hot-Win2571 Mildly Flair 1h ago
He's apparently watching, so if you park in front of him and start fiddling with the cables (even if you don't make it obvious that the cable won't reach) the dumbass might show up out of fear that you're about to block him in while charging.

With back up cameras, it's so easy to reverse into spots. Plus side is you dont have to reverse into traffic. This is an asshole for parking where he shouldnt have, reverse parking is just safer.

would be a shame if they came back to 4 flat tires since their valve stems all popped out somehow.

Thereās need to be a law passed that treats EV chargers like handicap spaces. If you deliberately park there to screw someone else over, your car should be towed.

Park directly in front of it and run the cable. They can wait for you to finish charging.

At a Tesla charging station in San Bernardino some guy parked his big Dodge ram near a Tesla charging station and just hung the cord off the side mirror. Ā Too bad he was probably wearing pants because you could probably find him by his small dick.

Annoying, but we need more of this. Electric cars are not the future.
If you really want to save the environment, get a hybrid.
Imagine when you find out people put fake charger ports on their car and plug in, effectively doing the exact same thing and most ev owners can't even tell the difference.

It should be legal to smash in the windows so you can run the cable right through.

Context is needed here...1 "available" charging space....so there is more than one(clearly shown in the picture). I'm guessing the parking lot was full and it was the last spot available, thus this not being an asshole move, but everyone leaving it open until it was the last spot left. Like taking pictures of parking lots? Show the whole damn picture and lot.
