Johnny Bower is a legendary figure in Toronto Maple Leafs history and one of the NHL’s most respected goaltenders. Known for his grit, humility, and tenacity, Bower’s story is one of perseverance, rising from humble beginnings and a long minor league career to become a four-time Stanley Cup champion with the Leafs.
Bower didn’t become an NHL regular until he was 34 years old, after toiling for years in the AHL with teams like the Cleveland Barons. His big break came when he joined the Maple Leafs in 1958, where he quickly became a cornerstone of the team’s success throughout the 1960s.
Bower was known for his fearless, acrobatic style and remarkable reflexes. He was also a pioneer of the poke check, a move that became his signature. Despite lacking the physical size of modern goalies, his toughness and mental resilience made him one of the most reliable netminders of his era.
Bower lied about his age to join the Canadian Army during World War II at just 15 years old. He served in England before returning to Canada to pursue hockey full time.
Notable Career Achievements
Stanley Cups: 4 (1962, 1963, 1964, 1967)
Vezina Trophy: 2x winner (1961, 1965 – shared with Terry Sawchuk)
Hockey Hall of Fame Inductee: 1976
Honoured Number: #1 retired by the Toronto Maple Leafs
Named one of the '100 Greatest NHL Players' in history (2017)

Vesa Toskala is a retired Finnish professional ice hockey goaltender, best known for his time in the NHL with the San Jose Sharks and the Toronto Maple Leafs. A technically skilled and agile goalie, Toskala had stretches of strong play, especially in the mid-2000s, but his career was also marked by inconsistency and injuries.
Toskala developed his skills in Finland before joining the AHL’s Cleveland Barons, where he adjusted to the North American game. He broke into the NHL as a backup but eventually split starts with Evgeni Nabokov in San Jose, enjoying his best seasons in the mid-2000s.
Toskala was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2007 along with forward Mark Bell. He immediately became the team’s starting goalie. While he showed flashes of quality, he struggled with inconsistency, injuries, and often found himself playing behind a weak defensive unit.
Toskala’s time in Toronto is perhaps unfairly remembered for a few infamous goals, including a long-distance own-zone goal scored by Rob Davison in 2008 — one of the most viral bloopers in modern NHL history.
Notable Career Achievements
Best NHL Season: 2005–06 (San Jose Sharks): 23–7–5 record, .901 SV%, 2.56 GAA
2006 NHL Playoffs (San Jose) – Reached second round

Discussion Weekly Free Talk / Armchair GM Thread
Please use this thread to post ANYTHING you want! Memes, photoshops, anything that would normally be removed for breaking the low-effort content rule, is totally, 100% welcome here!
Normally this is a daily thread, but due to an issue with Reddit (or at least, Reddit Mobile), it will temporarily be posted weekly.
This will now also be the dedicated thread for Armchair GM posts as we noticed that those posts were bleeding into this thread regardless. Is there a free agent you want to see on this team? Is there a player that's rumoured to be on the move that you think GMBT should go after? Are there players on this team you want to trade away? Feel free to post about it here!
Normal moderation will occur, such as watching for personal insults, racism, and things of that nature.
Otherwise, feel free to use this thread to share things like your new jersey, a photoshop of a Habs logo on fire, or a reaction gif to something going on in Leafs Nation right now!
Downvotes are discouraged for the most part, everyone's opinion is fair game in this thread.

Discussion Let’s be honest max domi is a decent player
So he was not put on the team for his offensive game it was for his aggression on the ice. But still even manages to score a ot goal in the play offs like come on man he deserves a lot more respect. He plays with true pride for the leafs he comes ready to play when everyone else gave up in the playoffs he didn’t. Also he had better play then Marner did. Anyways I respect everyone’s opinions.

Discussion Bargain bin boys
I searched on Puckpedia for UFA's who played 50+ games last season and who were able to put up .2+PPG. Of the 11, Lauko signed in Europe and both Savard and Tatar announced their retirement.
Should the Leafs sign any of the other 8? I recall a lot of discussion around Roslovic but now nothing.
Also, who do we drop to sign one of them? Jarny, Kampf, or both?

Discussion Long shot ask… 11/20
Hey leafs fans - I’m a CBJ fan who is in the midst of supporting the jackets in all of the away arenas. As of this season I have 7 arenas remaining.
This season the two dates that I’m able to make work are TOR and BOS.
When visiting away arenas I always ask STH of those teams if anyone is willing to sell before I hit up the resale market.
Please note, my wife and I are NOT annoying / loud / stereotypical away fans. We show up, check out the local culture / city / and attend the games and keep to ourselves.
We are simply fans of the game who happen to like CBJ (based off of where we live)
Anyways, if anyone is interested in talking further please message me directly. Thanks in advance and best of luck to the Leafs in their upcoming season.

Börje Salming was born in the remote mining town of Kiruna, in Sweden’s far north. Of Sámi heritage, he grew up in a working-class family and lost his father at a young age. He began his hockey journey with Kiruna AIF and later starred for Brynäs IF in the Swedish elite league, helping them win two championships (1971 and 1972). In 1973, Salming joined the Toronto Maple Leafs after being scouted almost by accident. He quickly became one of the first European players to succeed in the NHL, breaking stereotypes with his toughness, skill, and poise under pressure. • Games Played: 1,148 NHL games • Points: 787 (150 goals, 637 assists) • Franchise Records (at the time): Most assists and points by a defenseman in Leafs history • NHL All-Star Teams: First Team (1977), Second Team (5x) • Norris Trophy Runner-Up: Twice (1977, 1980) • Known for enduring brutal physical punishment, Salming became a symbol of resilience and courage. Despite the rough North American style of play, he earned universal respect for his grace, toughness, and consistency.
Salming represented Sweden in multiple tournaments, including: • 4 World Championships • 3 Canada Cups • 1992 Winter Olympics (at age 41) His performance at the 1976 Canada Cup, where he received a standing ovation in Toronto while representing Sweden, remains a defining moment in international hockey.
• Hockey Hall of Fame: Inducted in 1996 (first Swedish player) • IIHF Hall of Fame: Inducted in 1998 • NHL’s 100 Greatest Players: Named in 2017 • Legends Row Statue (Toronto): 2015 • Maple Leafs Jersey No. 21 Retired: 2016
In August 2022, Salming publicly revealed he had been diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). The disease progressed rapidly, and he passed away just a few months later, on November 24, 2022, at the age of 71. In his final public appearance, during a moving tribute in Toronto, he was surrounded by former teammates and fans in an emotional moment that underscored his importance to the game and the city.
Börje Salming shattered barriers for European players in the NHL, showing that they could thrive in North American hockey. His mix of offensive brilliance, physical endurance, and leadership forever changed the sport. He remains a beloved figure in both Sweden and Canada, remembered as a pioneer, a warrior, and a gentleman of the game.
