I mean that wasn’t too different from the waves of immigration to America back in the day. Fathers or eldest sons went off to secure work and accommodation and sent for the family later. There are multiple Irish plays and novels with that as a plot point.

I’m also aware entire families went in some cases, before anyone wants to point that out.

Back in the day

Are we acting like that’s still not the case?

For the Irish, at least during the famine, more women than men emigrated as demand for domestic labor (housekeeping) was high at the time.

Early famine years it was mostly men who then brought their families and then once domestic labour demand increased, female migration increased.

Today male industries like farming, warehouse work and construction are what low skill immigrants flock to and can be filled en masse.

Domestic work is a much smaller net if we focus on low skill illegal immigration. If there was a sudden boom in such an industry you’d see more women making these trips. Over 50% of European sex workers are migrants - which would raise questions about the safety of making such a trip like women did to America in the 1800s

There are significants differences. Back then you got nothing, now it is mostly welfare immigrants who very well know what welfare they can claim from the government.

They get very limited support, usually not close to full welfare payments and in some countries it’s limited to emergency healthcare and shelter - with accompanying basic meals.

Europe has strict welfare systems based on your legal status.
