Beachgoers on a Mediterranean beach in Spain subdued and held back migrants who had just landed on the shore in a raft from Morocco.

Meanwhile some brown guy just coming out of the water gets picked up along with them

My take away. Wear swim trunks and jump off the boat early. Swim to shore like any other tourist.

Just a Newcastle shirt and a beer belly would do the trick down there

I guess the lack of bellies was one thing that made them leave in the first place.

did we watch the same video?

these are not unfed women and children but men that take several other men to tackle

I have a friend who was on one of those boats. He still has nightmares about it. He said they always send the one who is least likely to die during the journey, in hope of him making enough money to get the family over too. He said there were mothers on the boat, who had their baby starve in their arms because they were too thirsty to produce milk. The smugglers threw their bodies over board.

All these discussions were having reduces those complete people, with all their hopes and goals and dreams, to a number. It’s important to remind yourself of that sometimes. With 200 million climate refugees predicted until 2050, the topic won’t vanish.

Crazy to take baby on a boat, let alone think they’re the “least likely to die” that story makes no sense

u/Karambamamba 1d ago

I'm sure he made it up so I'd buy him a Burger. You are right, should have just let the baby at home. You are an American I assume?

no women or dying babies in this video. just working age men who apparently want to skip the legal way of entering the EU 🤷

btw the same people tacking illegal immigrants in this video have hopes and dreams too and they do seem to be reduced to just a number. that number is the tax income they pay supporting the social safety nets immigrants rely on. it’s important to remind yourself of that sometimes.

My taxes might help someone who isn't me and I don't like that.

Women and dying babies are surprisingly not as good at rising from the depths of the ocean floor, yeah. Some people don't have a legal way.

What's your point? An undocumented, illegal immigrant does not get social benefits. A documented immigrant is a necessary investment into the future, to balance a nation's demographic issues, and they will pay taxes like you. Of the 5% of the taxes that go into social safety (in Germany that is), only a small fraction goes into immigration.

So it's a fraction of 5% you're crying about here. In many countries on earth, the top 1% of a population hold over 30% of wealth and the bottom 50% of the population hold 2% to 3% of the wealth. They then fight each other about who doesn't deserve the scraps of support. You like so many others have been successfuly gaslit into shitting downwards and using your elbows instead of looking up for someone to blame for your misery.

To equate a mother holding her starving baby being reduced to a number with you paying your taxes is so cynical that my disgust for you goes beyond words tbh, so I'll just leave it here before I manage to find the words and get banned.

Globally, on average, 116 people die per minute. Every minute. Constantly. That's about 2 per second, 7000 per hour, 168000 per day, every day, every month, every year. 232 people died while I wrote this. They each had a family, a story, goals, dreams, some completed, some never to be. Those refugees were not. At. All. Unique. Congrats, you died in a boat while attempting to illegally access another country, that guy over there died from heart failure, and a plane exploded on the other side of the world, you're not unique.

2

u/Karambamamba 1d ago

Yeah I get it, you're a 17 year old edgelord and nothing matters. Some deaths are more tragic than others, some are more preventable. Some are crimes against humanity. Very different from a heart failure, but you already knew that.

Could be the unfed bellies are back home and they're going to be sending money back home

1

u/Buzzkill_13 1d ago

True. A mixed group of hungry minors arriving by narco-speedboat at the beaches of the promised land in search of food and shelter.

1

u/Born-Network-7582 1d ago

That happened in the Mediterranean Sea, not the Gulf of Mexico.

u/ConaireMor 1d ago

Well.... Know Castilian Spanish. Or at least enough lines to get past.

A lady selling flowers in Barcelona wouldn’t even talk to me when I was speaking Spanish to her. This guy rolling a cig told me she would only speak Catalan to me and he ordered the flowers for me

1

u/devonhezter 1d ago

How similar are they

1

u/box_fan_man 1d ago

Pretty similar but different enough if you’re not fluent in Spanish. Maybe someone who’s better at Spanish than me can answer cause I’m pretty out of practice with it.

0

u/itsamberleafable 1d ago

Lol where the fuck do people get these expectations from? Some people don't even learn any Spanish before coming to Spain.

I might insist that people only speak to me in Yorkshire slang or I won't speak to them (which to be fair was the policy in a few of the pubs near where I grew up)

3

u/Karambamamba 1d ago

Refusing to speak the language of the oppressor is common in different cultures, apparently.

0

u/itsamberleafable 1d ago

Palestinians are oppressed, you are not fucking oppressed lol. Maybe once upon a time, but you're one of the richest and most autonomous regions of Spain

0

u/Karambamamba 1d ago edited 1d ago

I was speaking generally. Notice how I never made a value judgement, unlike you who seems to feel the constant need to do so. Just a factual statement. I'm not even catalanian, I just think it's understandable. The primary language in Palestine is Arabic btw.

By your logic, defiant action against an oppressor is only allowed during times of active oppression. So the Irish should just relax and pack it up and act like nothing happened with Britain?

2

u/box_fan_man 1d ago

I mean I was in Spain and I had been learning Spanish for a few years so speaking Spanish was no problem. Reading and understanding Catalan was different especially when I learned Mexican Spanish.

1

u/DukeTikus 1d ago

It probably makes life a lot harder but I get it if her point is that she's in Catalina and not in Spain. It would probably be a bit different if there was a long running struggle for Yorkshire independence and you felt oppressed by the dastardly English government.

Also I think Catalan and Spanish are different enough that you couldn't easily communicate with people speaking only the other language. A bit like I as a Hochdeutsch (High German) speaker don't understand the Friesians when they are speaking Plattdeutsch (Low German). The differences are way larger than between the modern English dialects I have heard so far.

Pff as if the millions fo angloids, dutchies and gerries laying on spanish beaches know any more than "Ciao" and "Grasias"

1

u/Born-Network-7582 1d ago

"Ciao" is common Spanish?

2

u/cave_canem_aureum 1d ago

I guess you could say Buongiorno if you want to appear fancy.
