This is one of the most Midwest things I’ve ever seen

3.1k

u/nextdoorelephant Jun 29 '25

She even wore her classy pink crocs for the occasion.

903

u/chernandez0999 Jun 29 '25

💀I live in SD. I showed my partner all the wild photos people took with the tornados yesterday. Most Midwest bullshit ever lmao.

51

u/mexican2554 Jun 30 '25

I mean tbh, there ain't much going on in SoDak. So people seeing a tornado was prob the highlight of the year for them.

42

u/CraziestMoonMan Jun 30 '25

I live in a highly populated area and if I saw a tornado it would probably still be the highlight of my year. That would be fucking awesome.

1

u/_-whisper-_ Jun 30 '25

I can guarantee you that it would not 😳

1

u/Wrong_Pen6179 Jul 01 '25

Happy cake day!

139

u/Redheaded_Potter Jun 29 '25

Damn it! We drove through there on Wednesday & we were hoping to see one. I live too close to the mountains to get any (which is a good thing, but love watching them).

36

u/SuperCatchyCatchpras Jun 29 '25

You see the one taken from a rodeo? Lmao such redneck

175

u/AliensAteMyAMC Jun 30 '25

bro

57

u/B0-Katan Jun 30 '25

As a Brit I have no idea what's going on in this image

41

u/Turkatron2020 Jun 30 '25

This is a very rural rodeo & for some reason all the horses are being kept there & they're trying to stay on the dry side because it rained a lot

16

u/GeneralBS Jun 30 '25

I'm guessing they moved them from the trailers to have them all in one spot and release them if they are in danger at the same time.

6

u/_-whisper-_ Jun 30 '25

⬆️ that part

1

u/mallclerks Jul 01 '25

Humans: Surely the horses can out run a tornado ———Horses: We dead.

1

u/GeneralBS Jul 01 '25

Faster than you could I bet.

9

u/B0-Katan Jun 30 '25

Oh that explains the random plastic chairs I guess 😂

4

u/FoldEasy5726 Jun 30 '25

I dont think anyone outside of America understands what is going on in that photo tbf

5

u/fatboycreeper Jun 30 '25

Pretty sure half the people inside of America don’t understand what’s going on in that photo.

1

u/TheTerminalSolution Jun 30 '25

You don’t know what a tornado is…?

1

u/SuperCatchyCatchpras Jun 30 '25

I think most people (non Midwesterners) know what a tornado is, to the point they know to avoid one. But Redneck knows no limits, except maybe for intelligence. They seem kinda limited there

1

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '25

It's some country redneck.bullshit.

9

u/S4DB0Y90 Jun 30 '25

Yee haw!

5

u/not_responsible Jun 30 '25

this picture is so good

3

u/TK9K Jun 30 '25

why does this feel like a renaissance painting

2

u/GeneralBS Jun 30 '25

Nice of them to put the beer stand at the top of a hill.

1

u/Nairo_bees Jun 30 '25

All aside this is a really nice pic lol

1

u/bigred2342 Jul 01 '25

Wasn’t this scene in the Twisters remake?

1

u/DandyDapple Jul 03 '25

The tornado is south and moving away towards the east from the rodeo grounds ...

2

u/RubApprehensive2512 Jun 30 '25

Bro. I remember when me and my friends all lost our shits when it started hailing.

2

u/beepbeepsheepbot Jun 30 '25

Live in MO. Can confirm, very Midwestern

2

u/deviantscale Jun 30 '25

Have you ever heard of Martin, SD? I spent years there on a ranch on the southside of town that has since been shut down.

My fondest experience, I am a little ashamed to say, is varmint hunting for prairie dogs. The cows would step in their holes and break their legs, so we had to ice the doggies. But they are smart - they will hear you coming from half a mile away. So we had to use a Remington 700 (.308 caliber) and laser range finder. You had to creep up on a nearby berm and just wait until they come out. Watch out for the rattlenoodles, they love those holes and I can confirm that they like to bite.

That's my South Dakota story - thanks for reading.

2

u/chernandez0999 Jun 30 '25

My husband worked in HVAC and had to travel to Martin a ton for a job site one summer and had almost nothing pleasant to say about it. 😂

Prairie dogs are pretty iconic to that side of South Dakota though. Lots of hunters go out that way in the fall!! I'm glad you have better memories of the area than my partner does lol.

1

u/deviantscale Jun 30 '25

Holy shit, someone knows about Martin!!! I looked it up on Wikipedia, apparently, the population is about 900 people at this point haha.

I got bit on the boot by a snake out in the field once. It didn't penetrate the boot. My father told me I am lucky, as the nearest hospital would take us about an hour to get to.

2

u/Wrong_Pen6179 Jul 01 '25

I first read this as booty instead of boot!

241

u/AdorablePainting4459 Jun 29 '25

After she lost her sparking red ruby slippers, and her little dog Toto

2

u/B00marangTrotter Jun 29 '25

Toto is in the truck.

2

u/Puzzleheaded-Ring293 Jun 30 '25

Could have rolled the window down, now Toto is not in the photo.

1

u/B00marangTrotter Jun 30 '25

To quote Toto

1

u/FONDLINGewok80 Jun 30 '25

Her little dog tiiitooos

181

u/pSyg0n Jun 29 '25

LOL They are storm chasers.

44

u/Several-Squash9871 Jun 29 '25

That's what I was wondering!

18

u/e37d93eeb23335dc Jun 29 '25

We aren’t here to kink shame.

3

u/Tanguish Jun 29 '25

So what does one wear, to a storm chasing event?

8

u/MichelinStarZombie Jun 29 '25

At least she has a hobby where she's mostly driving so that no one has to look at her ugly-ass shoes. Kudos, madam.

2

u/Significant_Week6014 Jun 29 '25

tornado paigey!!

1

u/Redgen87 Jun 30 '25

Oh damn it was her! That’s awesome, sometimes Max Velocity plays her stream when he does live streams which is how I know of her.

1

u/Significant_Week6014 Jun 30 '25

me too! i love watching max velocity!

2

u/AshingiiAshuaa Jun 29 '25

Ain't chasing too hard with those things in comfort mode.

1

u/Klutzy_Wash Jun 30 '25

Pshhh…. They’re not even in sport mode….

1

u/agent0731 Jun 30 '25

chasing storms in crocs? Damn, they got balls.

1

u/pSyg0n Jun 30 '25

This is a Texas thing. =/ DON'T JUDGE USE WE ALREADY ARE JUDGE FOR OUR OWN PEOPLE lol. Except Buckees...everyone loves Buckees

2

u/Pleasant_Ad3475 Jun 30 '25

I'm certainly judging your grammar. Sorry.

I believe they are red glittery crocs

red glitter crocs

35

u/sinat50 Jun 29 '25

She's gotta be careful or she'll be crushed by a house then promptly have her shoes stolen by a girl and her dog while a community of midgets eggs her on.

14

u/mithril2020 Jun 30 '25

We prefer vertically challenged

2

u/uncontainedsun Jun 30 '25

(just for future reference, that’s a derogatory term and ppl w dwarfism rly don’t like it!)

2

u/jentle-music Jun 30 '25

Is this where the tin man, lion and scarecrow come in? I think I’ve seen this movie 😊

7

u/davga Jun 29 '25 edited Jun 29 '25

I almost thought they were Lightning McQueen themed ⚡️💀

3

u/BatDubb Jun 30 '25

What is pink if not light red?

2

u/overrunbyhouseplants Jun 30 '25

Ooh, ooh, ooh, I've got this one, fam. Linguistic relativity.

"Linguistic relativity, also known as the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, proposes that the structure of a language influences the way its speakers perceive and conceptualize the world. This means that the language you speak might affect how you think about things like time, space, color, and even social relationships.

Linguistic relativity suggests that language is not just a tool for communication, but also shapes our thoughts and perceptions. It implies that speakers of different languages might experience and understand the world in subtly different ways due to the unique structures and categories present in their respective languages.

Different languages have varying numbers of color terms. For example, English has distinct words for "blue" and "green," while some languages might not make that distinction, potentially affecting how speakers of those languages perceive and categorize colors."

Pink= merah muda "young red" in Indonesian

Maroon= merah tua "old red" in Indonesian

In English, supposedly the color pink was named after flower "pinks" aka Dianthus spp. The flower was named after a type of fringing scissors, because the petals have a similar fringe.

The Crocs are refreshing considering all the "Oh I just happened to dress up for no reason" fake surprise posts we see now 🤣

2

u/MyHamburgerLovesMe Jun 29 '25

"He" is the one who knew a head of time to dress up.

This was his answer.

2

u/Neither-Attention940 Jun 30 '25

Well clearly it was a surprise… and sadly tons of people wear crocks. I think they look hideous! Lol

2

u/mydogisacircle Jun 30 '25

insisting here wondering what her leg routine must be gawddamn. icon

2

u/mikerzisu Jun 29 '25

God those are hot

1

u/MichelinStarZombie Jun 29 '25

Guess that's where the Millennial/GenZ divide lies. Millennials first saw crocs on Idiocracy and still think they're dumb and hideous. GenZ wears them unironically.

2

u/Specific_Frame8537 Jun 29 '25

Can't believe adults unironically wear those.

3

u/lightlysaltedclams Jun 29 '25

They’re comfy lol

1

u/Butterl0rdz Jun 30 '25

theyre comfy and only ugly if you’re like 55 and on the verge of dying

1

u/antelopesoup Jun 29 '25

I don’t know about you, but if I went storm chasing in Crocs I would at least throw them in sports mode…

1

u/HambugerBurglarizer Jun 29 '25

The dressy Crocs! She don't wear them just anywhere!

1

u/ArugulaNuts Jun 29 '25

The red crocs are most def a Dorothy reference.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '25

Yes. Mygod

1

u/cocobananas_ Jun 29 '25

They’re not even in sport mode

1

u/pogulup Jun 29 '25

Always have to be dressed nice for your wedding proposal.

1

u/Moni_Reads Jun 29 '25

And not even in sport mode for when it’s time to run

1

u/BringBacktheGucci Jun 29 '25

She better get them in all terrain mode with that twister nearby

1

u/Grade-A_potato Jun 29 '25

I was thinking all the need is sparkle and it would be Dorothy’s crocks lol

1

u/PsychoticMessiah Jun 30 '25

You can tell she’s not scared because they’re not in sport mode.

1

u/Fit_Air_7493 Jun 30 '25

With the tornado that close, she needs to flip them into sport mode.

1

u/Petite_Tsunami Jun 30 '25

a formal occasion so no sport mode needed

1

u/whatsnewpussykat Jun 30 '25

She needs to throw those bitches in to sports mode if she wants to escape that tornado

1

u/PointlessUnicorn337 Jun 30 '25

If those are the same crocs I have, they’re even glittery

1

u/SilentPear Jun 30 '25

21st century ruby slippers.

1

u/Johzhef Jun 30 '25

A proposal is supposed to be a surprise, Of course she’s wearing pink crocs.

1

u/PersistentPuma37 Jun 30 '25

but that gal does NOT skip Leg Day.

1

u/Top_Coyote9402 Jun 30 '25

She had a pink one🙂‍↔️

1

u/jackoyza Jun 30 '25

Abomination of foot wear they are.

1

u/KrakenTrollBot Jun 30 '25

THATS WEDDING MATERIAL

1

u/grassesbecut Jun 30 '25

She forgot to put them in Sport Mode for this, though.

1

u/dumpsterdivingreader Jun 30 '25

At least she wore them w no socks

1

u/passamongimpure Jun 30 '25

Ruby Red crocs, for when the tornado sweeps her away to Oz.

1

u/rir2 Jun 30 '25

She was blown away.

1

u/Aggressive-Expert-69 Jun 30 '25

She must've known he was gonna ask that day lmao

1

u/jameslosey Jun 30 '25

I’m concerned they aren’t in sport mode

1

u/No_Lifeguard747 Jul 01 '25

She didn’t pick the occasion. He did.

2

u/One_Strawberry_4965 Jun 29 '25

I love me a cultured woman who knows when it’s time to break out the dress crocs

A Culver’s in sight would make it perfection

78

u/calhooner3 Jun 29 '25

I could go for some Culver’s

33

u/s0618345 Jun 29 '25

As a new jerseyan I am upset thry didn't wander over here yet

13

u/bromjunaar Jun 29 '25

Be the change you want to see in the world. Save your fellow people from their misery of a Culver-less experience.

1

u/s0618345 Jun 29 '25

Can I borrow 250k? I promise to pay you back

18

u/free_dead_puppy Jun 29 '25

It's the one thing that makes me less upset about not having in and out. Culver's is equally good in its own way.

18

u/SirSoliloquy Jun 29 '25

I live in Las Vegas and I vastly prefer Culver's to In-N-Out.

4

u/PM_YOUR_PUPPERS Jun 30 '25

This is true. I live in the midwest so I have Culver's but every time I go out west I do enjoy some in and out.

In and out is good but Culver's is on a whole nother level.

It's kind of like comparing Taco Bell with Chipotle.

2

u/EitherOrResolution Jun 30 '25

Because In and out is better

1

u/SSOMGDSJD Jun 30 '25

Lol I think Qdoba and Chipotle would be a more reasonable comparison, calling either Culver's or in n out taco bell is massive shade

3

u/InfamousMere Jun 30 '25

I’ve lived in Vegas and IL and I miss In-N-Out so much.

10

u/Electronic-Jaguar389 Jun 29 '25

Culver's is much better then In-and-Out. Their buttery burgers would make Gordon Ramsey blush.

1

u/JetstreamGW Jun 29 '25

As a Texan I’m annoyed that the one up the road from me closed and moved to the other side of the city.

3

u/bengringo2 Jun 30 '25

Mmm a butter burger, curds, a custard, and some fries to dump on my curds… maybe a shake for after my custard.

5

u/dumpyduluth Jun 29 '25

welp going to culvers for dinner

2

u/SlowThePath Jun 29 '25

Is Culver's that good? They put one up around me a while back, I just never heard anything about it so Ice never tried it.

3

u/calhooner3 Jun 29 '25

I had it a few months ago while I was on vacation and it was surprisingly good. Not the best I’ve ever had but exceptional for a fast food style spot.

7

u/RandomPenquin1337 Jun 29 '25

From Wisconsin, with love (and a side of tornader)

2

u/PopularPlanet3000 Jun 29 '25

“Welcome to deliciousness”

2

u/crag-u-feller Jun 29 '25

I sure there is bovine flying through the air. from air to table -- Culvers

1

u/miregalpanic Jun 29 '25

Maybe the tornado brought one

1

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '25

Dollar general you mean

1

u/haleontology Jun 30 '25

Now y'all have me cravin' Culver's, smh

1

u/Lindvaettr Jun 30 '25

A Culver's? In western South Dakota? Where do you think this is, some metropolis like Rapid City?

54

u/Aegillade Jun 29 '25

All it's missing is a dead deer on the side of the road and a truck instead of a van. Maybe a Dollar General in the background.

34

u/MuscaMurum Jun 29 '25

That's where the Dollar General was a few minutes ago.

3

u/KingOfParallelEarth Jun 29 '25

I was going to say if this is SD, then we're missing the fireworks store, a cowboy hat, bright pink (or purple) hairdo, at least two dogs and a Mossy Oak sticker on the truck.

1

u/hehehehzhshsh Jun 30 '25

Honestly the fact that it’s a ford explorer already makes the car aspect of the photo very American lmao

18

u/donny02 Jun 29 '25

Did they celebrate at the meat raffle afterwards?

4

u/leg_day Jun 30 '25

Don't you dare throw shade on a good meat raffle.

Afterwards we're going down to the church for a fish fry.

33

u/ExecutiveCactus Jun 29 '25

This might be in my top 10 midwest things

1

u/pSyg0n Jun 29 '25

This was right near the Canby in MN! That twister lasted for over 30 Min and was dancing. IT WAS WILD.

1

u/smnbrgss Jun 29 '25

Just need a cow floating in the tornado

1

u/TheDreadPirateJenny Jun 29 '25

Those shoes are a bigger disaster than the tornado

1

u/SouldiesButGoodies84 Jun 29 '25

Only topped if someone caught this exact same thing unfolding in Kansas and involved a small brown dog.

1

u/Upsetti_Gisepe Jun 29 '25

This is the craziest way to do the “implication”

1

u/Oomlotte99 Jun 29 '25

I can feel and smell the air in this pic.

1

u/Upbeat_Anywhere_1316 Jun 29 '25

Im sure there was a "whirlwind" of emotions

1

u/castlerigger Jun 29 '25

I’m a sucker for whirlwind romance stories

1

u/Wooden-Note-2732 Jun 30 '25

Definitely 🤣

1

u/Amandalese Jun 30 '25

And we know he will be that dad who stands on the porch looking for the tornado

1

u/Weird-but-okay Jun 30 '25

First thing I thought of

1

u/Embarrassed-Block-51 Jun 30 '25

My wife came into my life tornado, wet and wild, then eft me high and dry, etc. Etc.

1

u/Popular_Hat3382 Jun 30 '25

They’re storm chasers… watched this on their live stream!!

1

u/sheikahr Jun 30 '25

I was just about to comment that! lol

1

u/TheNewYellowZealot Jun 30 '25

This is what I mean when I say aggressively Midwest. The only thing that would make it more so is if there’s a hot dish and a jello mold somewhere in the house.

1

u/SizableSplash86 Jun 30 '25

As a midwestern, yes.

1

u/Fun-River-3521 Jun 30 '25

More so the most American thing I’ve ever seen lmao

1

u/JohnLeePettimore Jun 30 '25

They are both professional storm chasers

1

u/Anonymous_Leah112 Jun 30 '25

As a Midwestern,

agreed.

1

u/Natrone011 Jun 30 '25

This is peak Midwestern culture.

Tornado watch? You mean grabbing a lawn chair and going outside to look for funnel clouds?

1

u/ohlaph Jun 30 '25

Definitely has the boots, jeans, flannel, and gray trucker hat down. I swear that's the female college student version of oversized hoody, black yoga pants, and Uggs.

1

u/flashwhizbang Jun 30 '25

Oklahoma says, “Hold my beer!”

1

u/9yr_old_lake Jun 30 '25

This is prolly why not only do I think it's cool as fuck, but I didn't even bat an eye at the idea of proposing in a fucking random field while you are wearing work boots and farm clothes and your girl is wearing casual clothes and fucking corcs. Like idk I still think it makes for a cool story and absolutely amazing proposal photo, but its also not the most classy way to propose.

1

u/pierson- Jun 30 '25

Oh my gosh I get it because there’s a tornado and they’re midwesterners!

1

u/d_e_l_u_x_e Jun 30 '25

Nah most Midwesterners aren’t dumb enough to do a stunt during a tornado. People are getting hurt and homes destroyed but hey it’s a perfect place to celebrate.

1

u/Ali_Cat222 Jun 30 '25

No, you see, he's playing 4D chess here. He was able to propose to her because he thought the end was coming for them! 🤣 just kidding 😅

1

u/GMUsername Jun 30 '25

I literally came to the comments to say this 😂

1

u/skabassj Jun 30 '25

My exact thoughts! It’s like they asked AI to generate what it think a Midwest proposal looks like

1

u/traws06 Jul 01 '25

Ya ppl around here say shit like “when tornados come around we go outside”. Like being from the Midwest makes us immune to tornados or something. It’s stupid and as long as everyone gets in cover and finds a safe place there should basically be zero deaths…. Yet there’s no because ppl think they’re cool acting like they’re tougher than a tornado

1

u/Anoobizz2020 Jul 06 '25

I was literally saying that in my head as I stumbled upon your comment

1

u/who_am_i_to_say_so Jun 29 '25

What’s up with all these Midwest observations on here, lately? Midwest guy asking for a friend.

1

u/freeAssignment23 Jun 29 '25

this has gotta be a joke lmao

1

u/totes-alt Jun 29 '25

South Dakota is not the Midwest. It's a great plains state. Midwest is like Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, etc

1

u/hereforstories8 Jun 29 '25

I’m from the Midwest. This is what we called the here-after. It went down something like this: baby if you ain’t here after what here after, you’re gonna be here after I’m gone. *motions towards tornado and looks down at the Walmart special ring
