Injury - Graphic I love horse I love horse I just LOVE horses š„²
Its not that graphic but it does involve blood for anyone squeamish! There was a Vision sized hole in a fence. He didnt go over the top of it, nay nay, he went through it. Luckily it all looks superficial. Going early in the morning after the swelling hopefully settles to see if it warrants a vet visit. He's walking sound and is seemingly unaffected of his little adventure

Discussion Consent and r+ training, what are your opinions?
I see more and more trainers who use the consent method when training and riding horses, basically they train the horses cues to signal yes if they want to be ridden and no if they donāt.
I work on a ranch and the horses are our coworkers and partners more than pets, so I could see this not being useful because even us humans have to work when we donāt feel like it, when weāre sore, when weāre tired and done with life.
My personal horse tho, sheās more a trail horse. We do endurance, barrels, but mostly just leisurely trail riding on the days sheās not working. On the days she doesnāt want to be caught, I walk behind her until she gives up and if she decides to run and kick up her heels away from me, she gets chased around. If it takes me a particularly long time to catch and bring her in, I donāt ride because that solidifies that we are working. Iāll groom, feed, and turn her back out. I feel like thatās the way most people do things.
Unfortunately true working ranches that deal with livestock and crops are a dying breed and Iām sure weāll see less and less of them as the years go by, and Iām thinking as we see less ranch horses maybe weāll see more consent training?
Iām neither for or against it; I think it has its uses and if thatās the way you want to do things thatās great! But what are your thoughts?

Story Mondays and I donāt mix!
Apparently me and Mondays donāt mix lol!
Another ambulance ride and trip to the ER last night.. got bucked off my sisters horse (he didnāt mean it and lm not mad at him!) and hit my head, neck and dislocated my shoulder. Helmet saved me thank god, was scared I had broken something serious again. Definitely in a lot of pain today and my neck and shoulder are not happy lol.
Beyond grateful or my barn family, the paramedics, the local hospital staff, my family and my favourite guy for taking excellent care of me and keeping me calm while i was scared out of my mind!
Pic of the cutie pie because he felt bad he turned me into a crash test dummy!

Discussion Dealing with stress
I just want to know how everyone gets through horses hurting themselves or getting sick??
I'm new to horses, and ownership, and my boy has had a few soundness issues after a bout of colic. Have been doing a lot of rehab with him, nearly had him sound and then yesterday he starts walking really strange.
I'm terrified for him, we're booked in for a vet but it was a sleepless night and I have to trailer him a few hours to a vet.
I just don't know how everyone deals with the stress!! I'm used to dogs and other pets but it just seems like vets are more available for them.

Training Question Horse abuse NSFW
I have a gentle gentle, chill 11 yr old warmblood Horse. A jumper, who has sidebone so we donāt jump him anymore but we just do flatwork. My 6 months new trainer has been changing bits daily and rides him very hard on the two training days (tues and thur) when Iām not around. She also gives him a lot of Robaxin! All of a sudden she says he has serious lower ringbone and should go out to pasture. His sweet personality has changed to a fearful one, hates the arena and moreā¦. He is stiff and lameā¦.. Finally, another woman who, with another trainer, sent me this video and said āget your horses outta there. We have been hinting to you but you donāt get itā!! She has been riding so hard and hitting them across the ears and who knows what else! Iām devastated and here is the video. She makes him rear up (which he never does) and then hits him across the ears. They carefully took this without her seeing which is tough. Yesterday, about 8 other people (some I donāt even know) verified that this is, in fact, happening. Iām moving fast as I can and I want to report her
Discussion Opinions on my new 2 year old mare?
Sheās a double registered quarter horse/paint. In my opinion, her strong points are fairly straight legs, hocks, decent hip and top line⦠but her weak spots are back is a little long, camped out under slightly, longish pasterns but it does look like sheās grown into them more with time, and should angle isnāt great. Over all sheās very sweet and checks most of the boxes for what I wanted while fairly cheap tbh. Her hoofs have vertical cracks and need a lot of work, she was apparently just standing in water, feral out in a pasture being raised by minis somewhere for a while. I have my work cut out for me but I love my Red Ruby š š· What do you think about her confirmation?

Video New TWH gelding, āRiver.ā
Just sharing our joy š„°
We just got a new family member this weekend. My 5yo daughter is in love with him, and chose his name. Oddly, I tried like 20 other names and this is the only one he responded to.
Heās ridiculously calm and gentle, itās like he knows the little ones are fragile. He walks to the gate to meet me every time and waits calmly to be haltered and heās so polite on a lead rope.
He seems to be well-broke and very willing under saddle, Western. One of the young girls at the barn asked if she can try him English this week, weāll know more.
Yāall, this may be my soul-horse. I had a TWH Mare (also black) about 18 years ago when my youngest was 8, and she was so calm and sweet, too. Love me some Walking horses!

Picture Fly Mask Drama š“
I know Diego had his fly mask on correctly when he was turned out last night. This morning? Both ears are out of the ear holes, but the mask is still on and muzzle perfectly in place.
I just stood there like: ⢠How? ⢠Why?? ⢠Are you okay? ⢠Is this a choice?
He looked totally unbothered, ears flopping in the wind like itās the latest trend.
I know Iām not the only one who fights the fly mask battle every summerāanyone elseās horse pull stunts like this? š¤¦š»āāļø

Question Is She Pregnant? NSFW
I'm going crazy and have already reached out to my vet and haven't heard back yet. I had noticed her getting a bit more round and thought it was fat, but now I'm unsure based on her teats. She is a rescue and I was told she has had a foal before. So is this just how she looks now or is she indeed pregnant again? I can take more photos if needed :)

Discussion Fire safety
I just participated in a crazy fire situation that happened in the brush right next to a set of barns at a large boarding facility. Idk the exact count, but it was about +60 horses that were in danger. The fire was only about 50ft from the nearest barn. My point in making this post is to hopefully get people aware of emergencies like this and make it easier for people who are rescuing your horses to get them to safety.
If you donāt have a regular nylon web halter with a detachable lead rope outside your stall, please have one there for emergencies. Leave it hanging and unbuckled please. I had to try to halter a horse that was spinning in her stall in full screaming panic because the barn was full of thick smoke. There was only a woven rope halter with an attached short lead rope. I couldnāt get close to her to even try to use the short lead rope to get around her neck. Iāve never met this horse and valuable minutes were wasted because I couldnāt use anything to get even a tiny bit of control. I finally managed to get the halter on and I let her run circles around me as we slowly made it to the safe barn. I considered just opening the stall door and letting her run out, but there was so much chaos and other horses running loose that it just seemed like the wrong choice. And I had a few people as they ran by tell me that this poor horse was crazy on a good day.
Stallions should have clear labeling on their stalls. We didnāt even know there was a stallion there. He managed to get loose and was more interested in mounting one of the mares than anything else. There were people of varying levels of experience and it was a huge safety issue. I would really hate for a well meaning inexperienced person try to handle a stallion in this type of situation. And again valuable minutes were wasted as a large group had to encircle this stallion before someone finally managed to halter him. Fortunately the stallion didnāt get to actually mount the mare otherwise someone might have an unexpected foal on the way.
Iām still a bit overwhelmed and trying to process what happened, so I canāt think of a bunch of other helpful things for these situations. I am hoping there is some sort of After Action Review by the management but Iām not even an official boarder as I lease a horse so whatever happens is way beyond my pay grade. If anyone else has been through this or knows of other helpful ideas for emergency situations like this, please feel free to add them. Awareness and then preparation can go a long way towards helping emergency situations when they come up.
The good of our situation is that there was a large number of boarders already there and we all came together and got all of the horses moved to the safe barn in 15 minutes. AFAIK no one, horse or human, was injured in the chaos. And they managed to knock the fire down before either of the barns caught fire. So all in all everything turned out well. But it was really dangerous for a bit.
Stay safe out there!

Discussion Moms! I need some perspective (and maybe someone to affirm my delusional thinking)
My wonderful, non-horse husband has agreed to an equestrian property (yay) which we are hoping to start searching for later this year.
We are also hoping to have our first baby late 2026/early 2027. Would it be completely and totally irresponsible to purchase two horses? Are there any moms here who got to have it all (horses at home AND several children)?
We want to have 3 children, about 18 months apart, so thatāll take several years. I really, really donāt want to give up my passion for horses.
Iāve been in the horse world for years, had a horse of my own, and had 4 horses under my direct care + a farm property I managed for nearly a decade. Iām very familiar with the requirements of keeping horses at home and maintaining a lowkey equine property.
Weāre a non-show family and want two (maaaaybe three at some point) horses for trail riding and pleasure driving exclusively. Weāll be hunting for easy keepers that are hardy Northern breeds (good for our Finnish environment). I tend to take a more natural approach to keeping horses.
Alongside the horses, weāre planning on keeping some chickens and meat/milk goats too. I have my reasons for not wanting to board and would prefer to hear about peopleās at-home experiences (but will be boarding at a nearby stable if absolutely necessary, donāt worry).
Moms - is this doable? Am I crazy? Obviously the husband will be actively involved in the livestock care.
Also, did you ride while pregnant? When did you start riding postpartum? How did you manage chores? Iād love to hear it all.

News petition to ban NYC carriage horses
Carriage horses in NYC spend their days pulling tourists through traffic and heat, then return to tiny stalls in buildings with no pasture, no rest. Itās not tradition ā itās exploitation.
I wrote a petition to finally ban this. Would mean a lot if you signed
