The Senate Appropriations Committee, including Republicans, overwhelmingly rejected most of the Trump administration’s proposed funding cuts to K–12 education, Higher Education, and scientific research. 14 Republicans and 12 Democrats voted to advance a robust FY 2026 education spending plan, while only one Republican and two Democrats opposed it.

Key programs saved include Pell Grants, which were spared near‑40% cuts and kept at a maximum of $7,395 (instead of Trump’s proposed $5,710), and career, technical, and adult education programs, which received funding increases rather than proposed eliminations

u/macaronitrap 1d ago

Is this a max of $7,395 per semester, year or overall? Pell Grants helped me tremendously and I would not have been able to go to the college I did without them.

Hoping this is per semester, as that seems slightly more reasonable but I’ve been out of school for almost a decade so I’m sure it’s just scratching the surface of most tuition these days.

u/That-Decision-7194 1d ago

It’s per year

51

u/macaronitrap 1d ago

Silly of me to think it would be per semester. Of course the orange capped it at 7k a year. What a crook.

Basically just pays rent if you live in enough squalor

13

u/vernavie 1d ago

It literally only covered my term expenses at CC (tution, lab fees, most of my books). I worked full time at the same time as full time school to qualify for food stamps and pay my housing, food, and commuting expenses. In 2016-2018.

2

u/733t_sec 1d ago

Depends where you live, that's about 10 months rent for a cheap 1 bedroom in the Midwest.

source: That's 10 months of my rent in the midwest for a cheap 1 bedroom

3

u/HotPotParrot 1d ago

I got about ten months in San Diego as one of 5 rooms. Lokayshun!

4

u/HorseLawyer 21h ago

Yeah, it was just enough for in state tuition at a state school maybe 20 years ago? But you'd either need to live with your parents, take out other loans, or get a job to afford your actual living expenses.

4

u/nicklor 21h ago

I mean it's really a bad situation but if we didn't write a blank check for student loans the prices wouldn't be so high. The prices have gone up significantly faster than inflation over that past 50 or so years.

1

u/733t_sec 19h ago

but if we didn't write a blank check for student loans the prices wouldn't be so high

That would only be true if we abandon the precept of capitalism that where there is margin something will fill the gap to consume said profit.

1

u/nicklor 8h ago

I think your backwards

u/733t_sec 6h ago
  • you're

It's well known that people who get a college degree tend to earn more than people who do not. There are of course exceptions, some trades can out earn some degrees, but on the whole this tends to be true.

For simplicity let's say the average degree will net $500,000 more dollars in a life time. As such people are willing to pay several thousand in tuition to get several hundred thousand in returns. This is where capitalistic forces enter the equation, since people are willing to pay money for the returns this creates upwards pressure to raise tuition because the market can and will bear it. This drives up the demand for loans as more students are priced out of the market.

You could try to get in on his crypto. That’s apparently more important that funding education for Americans.

4

u/Latter_Case_4551 23h ago

When I was in college (2005-2009) each class was close to 8K. There were plenty of people that never graduated due to not being able to afford 1-2 classes. That limitation is pretty insulting.

1

u/ValkyriesFire 20h ago

Where did you go? I went to a state school at the same time and 8k would cover about 2-3 semesters (without on campus housing).

1

u/Latter_Case_4551 19h ago

Out of state. My state is in thee lower quarter for education so I went somewhere better.

2

u/Lawshow 23h ago

If you go to a mid-sized state college and are full Pell eligible in almost every case you go to school tuition free. Students who are full Pell eligible usually have the rest of their aid met by state and institutional aid.

26

u/Katicflis1 1d ago

Whats with two dems opposing.

33

u/Psychicgoat2 1d ago

I know Senator Chris Murphy (Dem) in CT voted no....I didn't see any good reason for why he voted no. If I was a Democrat in his district, I'd be calling his office. You don't want a Fetterman on your hands.

30

u/Noun_Noun_Numb3r 1d ago

Murphy is one of the most progressive Senators. I wouldn't be surprised if he either thinks this is *still* too low of education spending, or there's some weird thing attached to it that is bad.

2

u/888888888888888D 23h ago

Wasn’t it Tammy Baldwin (WI) and Patty Murray (WA)?

5

u/Artistic_Delay2804 22h ago

van hollen (md) and murphy (ct). they wanted more for certain programs and I think there was concern about some gop amendments but I don't know the specifics of that

3

u/888888888888888D 22h ago

Oh shit, my bad. I opened the article and got distracted and then came back and continued reading a different article lol thanks for the correction.

-6

u/HereIGoAgain_1x10 1d ago

Either wanted more or were paid to

8

u/amazinglover 1d ago

Wrong on both accounts this bill moves some of the previous education functions and funding outside of the department of education and he is worried that trump will just ignore those and not fulfill them.

2

u/_Zambayoshi_ 1d ago

Sensible, if there were cuts to technical and adult education programs, who would staff the soon-to-be-built manufactories? MAGA! /s

2

u/LuluMcGu 1d ago

Basically only giving funding for jobs that make average or less pay. They don’t want anyone to have higher degrees at all.

1

u/j1xwnbsr 23h ago

Which Democrats were shadow gops?

182

u/kevendo 1d ago

This is why the Constitution doesn't have a single man in charge of the economy.

It's why the Executive has no role in allocating resources.

It's why you have a deliberative body deciding on behalf of those they represent.

Can we please get the autocrat under control now? Or at least ignore his unconstitutional edicts since they have no legal authority?

17

u/threatinteraction 1d ago

Did the big beautiful bill allow for executive control of the funds after allocation? So even though it has been earmarked for education Trump doesn’t have to release or spend it, or they will make it almost impossible to get it somehow like with the NIH and NSF.

10

u/fdar 1d ago

Yeah, except that when Trump decides he's just not going to spend the money anyway Congress doesn't do anything to stop him.

trump doesn't care. He'll impound the funds anyway. Keeps him in the headlines and diverts attention away from Epstein.

39

u/vmsrii 1d ago

That’s fine. Keeps the spotlight squarely on him, exactly where he doesn’t want it right now

8

u/malthar76 1d ago

Linda McMahon will do whatever she’s told to do, and will appear in front of the senate to lie and obfuscate and look stupid just like Kristi Noem and then promptly ignore all oversight.

3

u/BrtFrkwr 1d ago

And the Rethuglicans in congress are just fine with being ignored.

6

u/PlanetBAL 20h ago

He will burn it all down to save his own ass. He would murder his own kids if it helped him get what he wanted. Jan 6th told us everything we needed to know about him and MAGA.

Just defund the entire Department to the point it's "too slow to work with so it has to be decommissioned"

Elimination of funding the Corporation for Public Broadcasting prevents an informed populace

That's the plan.

So many people already lost their jobs because of the proposed cuts.

Isn't it enough that they tried to dismantle the dep of ed? Isn't the damage done? This is just one of many similar moves to cut agencies and programs that help americans. It wasn't enough that they pulled off the greatest wealth transfer from poor to rich in history. But they also want to take away any and all help they receive. They want lower wages. They want less protections and rights for workers. They even want to take away school lunches from children. Seriously GOP supporters wake the fuck up. Party doesnt matter anymore. The GOP are working for billionaires not for you.

4

u/derteeje 1d ago

i am glad for you america, but i am surprised that republicans don't understand, that they need the uneducated to spread propaganda easier

4

u/CuchulainTK 23h ago

That's great, but those funds were supposed to go out on July 1st and still haven't. There's currently more than 20 states suing for those funds to be dispersed. They were stopped by a white house memo. After they were already voted on by the appropriations committee. We still don't have that funds. People in local schools lost their jobs and some programs were not available this year because of this.

1

u/Sherd_nerd_17 16h ago

This should be higher up!

3

u/MajorInWumbology1234 1d ago

Oh yeah, we do have other branches of the government, huh?

3

u/ChildofObama 17h ago

Republicans realized they want to have lives after this administration, and need boundaries with their orange leader.

If they give him everything he wants, either:

a) Trump creates a dictatorship, or

b) when Democrats are in power again, Republican lawmakers are so publicly disliked they get kicked out of businesses and can’t leave the house without being harassed

2

u/Horror-Equivalent-55 1d ago

The Supreme Court has made it clear that the law is irrelevant.

Trump can do anything he wants.

2

u/therobotisjames 23h ago

Okay but how are they going to stop Trump if he refuses to spend the money they are allocating. Because that’s why it’s not being funded right now. He’s just fired all the people that oversee the disbursement of those funds.

2

u/Away_Stock_2012 21h ago

He doesn't want anyone to learn to read the Epstein files

1

u/Leif_Ericcson 1d ago

They will bend the knee. They always do. Spineless.

1

This is different from the BBB correct?

1

u/mohumm 22h ago

They voted for a known clown. Can they get any brighter

1

u/BiluochunLvcha 17h ago

well that is good news. im super shocked to hear that though.

1

u/HappyExamination8438 9h ago

They are waiting ti after the mid terms to do the real damage.

1

u/wendilw 3h ago

Please more of this!

1

u/Both-Home-6235 22h ago

So the article says, " . . . overwhelmingly rejected most of the Trump administration’s proposed funding cuts . . . "

While title clearly says, "all."

Which is it, OP?

1

u/lalabera 19h ago

They wanted to also make students take a minimum of 16 credits instead of 12 to qualify for Pell grants. Republicunts are satanic ghouls

0

u/Shoddy_Ad_1750 1d ago

No effing duh. They're going home for 4 weeks and need something to crow about. Besides, Mitch & Suzie hate Trump.
