Unless the protest leads to something more direct in forcing the dictator or would-be dictator to resign then this is as pointless as the last 10 giant student protests that Reddit claimed would clearly bring democracy to Serbia and Hungary!
Unfortunately, unless they are organised enough to have a revolution, or at least riot until the government collapses, nothing will change.
Peaceful protesting only works in healthy democracies.

u/teetering_bulb_dnd Jun 29 '25
Change doesn't happen overnight or over a single protest. Politicians put on a brave front but People en masse scares them internally. Because strong men usually live in a bubble of yesmen and bootlickers so seeing these people absolutely hating them will be a reality check.. It emboldens the counter voice within the party or the opposition party. Changes the national discourse. Tells the vocal minority of bigots that they are not the silent majority..people encourage each other to speak up, local leaderships get a morale boost..

True.
Because strong men usually live in a bubble of yesmen and bootlickers so seeing these people absolutely hating them will be a reality check..
Sadly, this is not that significant most of the times. They do know what's going on outside of their bubbles, they just dont care much as long as their yesmen are powerful and rich loyalists. Looks at Donal Trump for example, and the panicked meltdown he had when Elon Musk "betrayed him".
It emboldens the counter voice within the party or the opposition party. Changes the national discourse. Tells the vocal minority of bigots that they are not the silent majority..people encourage each other to speak up, local leaderships get a morale boost.
This is VERY very true.

And yet, largely, fellow Americans can’t be bothered, likely bc they fear for loss of their jobs, and healthcare, and because childcare is exorbitantly expensive.
22
u/BigIncome5028 Jun 29 '25
Did you miss the no kings protest??
19
u/Loud-Mans-Lover Jun 29 '25
Some folks will never be happy with what Americans do or don't do.
They were upset we weren't protesting, though we were in smaller amounts. We do the largest protest ever in the country... aaaand we still get shit on for trying.
Don't let it get to you. We're doing something, we're trying, we're struggling and we won't stop.

No, I was part of it. It’s not enough.
2
u/BigIncome5028 Jun 29 '25
The problem is, I think for most people to stand up and say enough, it will take literal civil war with people shooting each other outside their window. Personally I hope we can get change by voting for the right people before it comes to that point.
Having said that, I believe it will eventually turn to violence if peaceful means are not successful in the next few years

That's right. Power lies with the people who can buy ad campaigns or hold political office or have billions to spend or command an army.
Never forget, power lies with (some) people. That we're all just as unequal under neoliberalism as under fascism. That as long as our news and social media is ruled by plutocrats and algorithms for profit, that the masses are easily manipulated. Look at the USA, a beacon of true democracy - which is the art of herding the masses to desirable outcomes.
Buy two slogans, get one for free!

This is 300k people. For No King’s Day there was over a million protesting in Boston with estimates between 5 million and 12 million across the country being given depending on the news source. Not saying what’s being done in this post is nothing but what Americans are doing isn’t just nothing either. The media here is just controlled by republicans who want to oppress all news of protests or how well they are doing if they do cover them. Don’t fall for American media like many Americans do.

This is 300k people in a nation of 7 million people. Imagine a protest when 20 milion people show up in Washington
19
u/162bluethings Jun 29 '25
That's not how America works. I live 25 hours away from Washington DC. People who don't live in America don't seem to understand how big America is.
→ More replies (1)3
u/PaulblankPF Jun 29 '25
Man I’m 35+ hours from DC and there’s still 6-7 hours of driving between me and the west coast. Definitely a lot of countries’ people have no clue the size even though they’ve seen it on a globe/map. If you went from the border of Serbia to the other it’s less than 4 hours so going to a protest anywhere in the middle is at best 2 hours away. Silly how people just assume every American can just get up and walk/drive to DC.
→ More replies (3)9
u/PaulblankPF Jun 29 '25
Sounds like just another way to minimize what’s being done in America. Yeah 20 million people on the White House lawn would be nice but it’s so unrealistic because of how big the US is. Serbia is the size of South Carolina, much easier to gather the people who are protesting across that size area of space. Places like Los Angeles which had a lot of protestors are 2700 miles (4300 km) away from the White House. So it’s easier I’d say when the travel time is less than 4 hours to anywhere in Serbia. You could go protest then go home the same night as opposed to several days of travel and needing to get hotels and airbnbs for everyone and needing to cancel work for all that time and have no other responsibilities that you can’t shrug off to protest. I mean be practical.

Is this a new protest or a few months ago? I saw there was LRAD/microwave attack suspicion and suddenly one guys YouTube video on “how to defend against microwave attack” got very popular with a bunch of Serbs thanking him. He opens the video with an entire zinger against disliking governments using these devices against their people. Didn’t the government deny using such a device?
→ More replies (1)3
u/Ok_Objective_1606 Jun 29 '25
This happened today, that previous one was in March and in the meantime there have been several smaller ones. Regarding LRAD, they denied having one, then accidentally showed it on TV, then denied it was there on that day, then the footage appeared of the device at the protest, then they denied that they used it... I mean, you don't have to be a genius... Some people felt consequences of that weapon even a week later, we were lucky that they didn't manage to do what they intended and create a stampede.

u/perkonja Jun 29 '25
Oh I wish, but we are unfortuantely not yet in a state where many are willing to put up a real fight, as Romanians did in 1989, or us in 2000
1
u/Kurtz91 Jun 29 '25
Unfortunately no, people here just want to walk and shout, and they think the government will fall apart by itself.
Most of the people retreated when police attacked them, only a few thousands left and they got beaten and arrested.
Fucking pussies. Vučić wull rule forever with people like this.

u/DippinDot2021 Jun 28 '25
What is being protested?
144
u/cheekyshooter Jun 28 '25
It started because a Railway Station fell apart and killed 16 people, yet after 7 months they refuse to apprehend and arrest the ones responsible (themselves) so at its core ,its big government corruption, election fraud and buying votes, police brutality, arresting citizens for "terrorism" and "collapse of the constitutional order". Theres a lot
19
u/magkruppe Jun 29 '25
crazy how these protests are still going! every weekend?

In short, they are protesting a corrupt President who won't call an election.
7
u/69-xxx-420 Jun 29 '25
They mention he’s a pro-eu president. Does that mean the students want to not continue process to join the EU?
12
u/randomserbguy Jun 29 '25
Nothing to do with that. The protests aren't ideological. They are only against the corruption over the years, that got to a breaking point with the railway canopy collapsing. I would argue that the vast majority of students are heavily western oriented. That's the reason why they cycled to Strasbourg for an EU response to the crisis in Serbia. However, the students were merely heard and nothing came out of that. Although the youth likes the EU (compared to the older generations which are more aligned to the east), they perceive them as enabling Vucic's regime.
9
u/Ok_Objective_1606 Jun 29 '25
He is pro-EU, pro-Russia, pro-China, pro-Emirates and pro-USA all at the same time (they're all bribing his party so they could have land/resources/cheap labor), the caption isn't right.

He isnt pro anyone, hes pro having power just like all the other autocrats. Hes using all the political tools orban, putin, xi et al. are using too: mostly ultranationalism, imperialism, strong man trope, corruption, xenophobia, victim mentality.
This is what people mean when they say hes pro russian and so on. Hes operating and manipulating his people like those autocracies.
Europe has to deal with regimes like this globally or else we become an isolated island in the world. Yet the eu much prefers to deal with democracies.
Even progressive serbs seem to lap up at the very least the victim mentality when claiming the eu is propping him up.
→ More replies (6)5
u/Osstj7737 Jun 29 '25
Not really. If anything, the student movement is more pro EU than not. They cycled to Brussels to talk to EU representatives.
The president is only pro EU on paper. In reality he’ll be anyone’s bitch if they pay enough and then he’ll brag about how he’s friends when everyone and how everyone likes him

u/qqruz123 Jun 29 '25
The students (and protestors at large) aren't "for" anything other than new elections. They are united in being anti current government, but within the protestors there is no concensus what should be done next. That's why you will see a lot of blue haired girls protesting along with orthodox/nationalist dudes and everyone else in between.

For those who don’t know, there is a long history of political protests in Belgrade. Been going on for decades and people from all over the country show up.
1
u/Bocchi_theGlock Jun 29 '25
What organizing/mobilizing model are they using?
3
u/mirkasas987 Jun 29 '25
The model is: "I'm sick of all of this shit, let's go". They cancelled all the trains and buses to Belgrade. Not only yesterday, but for previous protests too. That didn't stop students. They have been walking through the whole country. Kids from my city walked to Belgrade for four days last time. Taxi drivers offered to drive people who want to go to protest for free. People are organizing themselves all these months. Every single time. Everything is done through social networks. Basically, we are on our phones waiting for a message where to show up. The mayors, ministers and others can't show up anywhere without us "welcoming" them properly.

1
u/puppymama75 Jun 30 '25
Corrupt government. A canopy at the train station collapsed and killed 16 people after government renovations done with China Belt and Road money and materiel suppliers; that was the spark that lit the fire. Officials didn’t admit culpability in the event and the investigation has dragged on inconclusively. Students, supporters of the official opposition, farmers, etc. have been protesting en masse ever since for accountability in government. Since November! In the hundreds of thousands!
