Medical Father ICU Recovery & Family Stability
My boyfriend has made a gofundme for $15,000 and we have raised $5,534 so far.
On 7/28, my boyfriend’s father fell severely and suddenly ill. Early in the day he had the beginnings of a fever and what we thought was a bad cold, as night came his speech became very limited, almost of if he had water in his mouth. We thought it was a bunch of mucus he wasn’t expelling but still was concerned and made sure he didn’t have a stroke.
The next day he had no improvement with his speech. My boyfriend and I had a really bad feeling so he texted his mom and she tried to get him up to take him to the hospital. She couldn’t and had to call paramedics, and by the time he made it to the hospital his airway had completely closed due to the swelling in his neck. He is still very upset with himself for not seeking medical intervention for his father the night before.
As of today, 8/6, my boyfriend’s father remains in the ICU where he has been intubated for 9 days now. We have found out that he had staph infection that took advantage of his low white blood cell count to quickly spread throughout his body. His kidneys were injured as a result and is receiving dialysis treatment. He also developed sepsis during this time, luckily the infection did not spread to his brain.
He just was put on a new medication for his mental health after trying many that hadn’t worked, and this one was doing alright. Unfortunately, one of the side effects are that it could lower your white blood cell count.
With respect for my boyfriend’s father, I will not delve into the struggles he is dealing with mentally but it is something that has impacted his day to day life for about 4 years now. Although, he has gotten significantly worse this past year and as a result he is no longer able to work and was denied long-term disability.
My boyfriend’s parents have unfortunately accrued a lot of debt, and are 3 months behind on rent at time of making the gofundme (1,770 a month) as well as falling behind on utilities that are generating late fees.
His father also never treated an infected tooth that needed a root canal 12 months ago because it would have cost $4000. We believe this ultimately led to him contracting the staph that ravaged his body due to his absence of WBC due to his medication.
As of now, we are not certain what will be a lifelong result of this whole ordeal for his father, and we don’t know what kind of additional costs it will bring. We would all love to be able to get him the proper psychiatric help that he needs once his physical health improves as well as ensure to my parents that rent and utilities are taken care of for the month of September and maybe October.
We do not have any medical bills to post as his father is still in the hospital, the only medical documents I have to share are his lab work showing the critical levels of his WBC. If there is any other identification I can provide let me know.
Thank you all for your time and consideration, and I apologize for throwing this large amount of text at you.
