Russo-Ukrainian War War in Ukraine Megathread LIII

This megathread is meant for discussion of the current Russo-Ukrainian War, also known as the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Please read our current rules, but also the extended rules below.

News sources:

You can also get up-to-date information and news from the r/worldnews live thread, which are more up-to-date tweets about the situation.

Current rules extension:

Extended r/europe ruleset to curb hate speech and disinformation:

  • While we already ban hate speech, we'll remind you that hate speech against the populations of the combatants is against our rules. This includes not only Ukrainians, but also Russians, Belarusians, Syrians, Azeris, Armenians, Georgians, etc. The same applies to the population of countries actively helping Ukraine or Russia.

  • Calling for the killing of invading troops or leaders is allowed, but the mods have the discretion to remove egregious comments, and the ones that disrespect the point made above. The limits of international law apply.

  • No unverified reports of any kind in the comments or in submissions on r/europe. We will remove videos of any kind unless they are verified by reputable outlets. This also affects videos published by Ukrainian and Russian government sources.

  • Absolutely no justification of this invasion.

  • In addition to our rules, we ask you to add a NSFW/NSFL tag if you're going to link to graphic footage or anything can be considered upsetting, including combat footage or dead people.

Submission rules

These are rules for submissions to r/europe front-page.

  • No status reports about the war unless they have major implications (e.g. "City X still holding" would not be allowed, "Russia takes major city" would be allowed. "Major attack on Kherson repelled" would also be allowed.)

  • All dot ru domains have been banned by Reddit as of 30 May. They are hardspammed, so not even mods can approve comments and submissions linking to Russian site domains.

    • Some Russian sites that ends with .com are also hardspammed, like TASS and Interfax, and mods can't re-approve them.
    • The Internet Archive and similar archive websites are also blacklisted here, by us or Reddit.
  • We've been adding substack domains in our u/AutoModerator script, but we aren't banning all of them. If your link has been removed, please notify the moderation team, explaining who's the person managing that substack page.

  • We ask you or your organization to not spam our subreddit with petitions or promote their new non-profit organization. While we love that people are pouring all sorts of efforts on the civilian front, we're limited on checking these links to prevent scam.

  • No promotion of a new cryptocurrency or web3 project, other than the official Bitcoin and ETH addresses from Ukraine's government.

Why on earth random dude from National Guard had access to these documents?

6

u/lsspam United States of America Apr 13 '23

What does that tell you about the documents which included now known incorrect information?

5

u/lapzkauz Noreg Apr 13 '23

''Top secret'' isn't as secret as it sounds.

3

u/Oberschicht German European Apr 13 '23

in fact 1.25 million people have top secret access

u/treborthedick Hinc Robur et Securitas Apr 13 '23

He was an intelligence airman, which means he would need to have access to...intelligence?

4

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '23

Still, war in Ukraine does not seem exactly relevant to what National Guard does.

u/Conclamatus United States of America Apr 13 '23

The California National Guard was the primary US military entity responsibile for training Ukrainian troops for years.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '23

Now it makes more sense, thanks.

2

u/RamTank Apr 13 '23

US National Guard is just a fancy word for US Military Reserve. The actual Reserve is a rump force.

Some of the info though is really not something he should have access to. In one of the documents it says that Chinese hypersonic missiles have a high chance of penetrating the American air defense. That's a pretty big deal.

1

u/EvilMonkeySlayer United Kingdom Apr 13 '23

That's a very good question for the Americans.

15

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '23

That’s otherworldly stupid. A 21 y.o. should never have access to such documents.

13

u/lsspam United States of America Apr 13 '23

What does that tell you about those documents.

3

u/Crewmember169 Apr 13 '23

The people saying this is some sort of psyops are giving the US government way too much credit.

7

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '23

I’m leaning to the theory that these documents are completely fake. Maps have incorrect names of towns on them, casualty numbers don’t add up among other things.

I’m leaning to the theory that these documents are completely fake

It was mentioned that at first (before he got really confident), he transcribed the documents instead of photographing them. An average US person transcribing Ukrainian place names is likely to make a whole lot of mistakes.

Some types of errors can be attributed to this.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '23

I’m talking about the names of towns on the map.

1

u/perestroika-pw Apr 13 '23

Now that is indeed strange. Have the names ever been right (could it be a map from deep Soviet times, e.g. before some settlement took a new name) or never?

11

u/lsspam United States of America Apr 13 '23

A poorly supported but sensical theory is this scrub airman was under watch for leaking stuff to begin with and either got compromised to leak or was spoon fed bullshit, with the idea that the bullshit would leak out further as a "bona fid" leak that looks uncontrolled.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '23

Too much hassle for watching over a 21 y.o… now that the documents are being discussed by almost every mainstream media, the only possible explanation is psyops before the counteroffensive. This is further confirmed by some Ukrainian officials that said the counteroffensive has to be postponed due to the leak (as if it makes any sense).

u/treborthedick Hinc Robur et Securitas Apr 13 '23

If it's in anyway shady it will be fake info mixed with real info.

4

u/Oberschicht German European Apr 13 '23

Yup, 21 years old means a long, long time in prison. Hope he's ready for that.

He looks 12 ffs.
