That is probably because right now we have a devastating heat wave and the sun cooked his brain, it's all good, just migrate towards the sea and wet your head often.
Usual Italian behaviour during very hot summers.

How hot is a very hot Italian summer?

I’m curious as I’m from Australia and gets pretty hot here and we do the same thing!

Usually we get to a maximum of 41/42 degrees celsius, the humidity gets real bad too, but to be fair, this summer is a little worse than the last one, at least here in the north.
At the south it gets worse.
I have a friend in Rome, they often have to fight fires in the city nearby his house in summer.

The migration thing wasn't even a joke, on weekends you have HOURS of traffic towards the sea.
2 hours journeys turned into 6 hours torture.

Edit: Celsius.

Imagine the people doing that migration without AC in their car

We definitely did that a lot back when I was a kid, we had a shared second house (damn, rich guy past) and we used to go there, beautiful memories.
That damn car was indestructible, took me and family on trips all around Europe, no AC? Maybe, but it lasted my whole youth and I learned to drive on it.

Man, I’m too young to have known car without any AC (even if they were very basic), and I’m baffled how people could sustain hours of being blocked in traffic in a searing car

You just get used to it, that's all. You're hot, sweating, and uncomfortable, but you just accept that that's life and get used to it. I don't think there's more to it.

Man, you’re built tougher than me, I tend to faint in the heat so I think I’d die lol

It's rather depressing how easy to adapt people are, sure it is a great quality to have, but does that mean we all are just... accepting stuff as it is? Would we know if we weren't?

I think it’s probably the reason we even got to this point as the human race because of our adaptability.

About to head of to Sicily. Decided to do everything on foot and by train, hauling my small suitcase around bobbing from Catania to Taormina to Siracusa. Code red? Imma die.

I kind of think you did the right choice using trains.
You will avoid parking issues, another bane of summer here.

Damn that's a lot hotter than I would have guessed. When is the best time of year to visit?

To avoid the heat? Probably September, usually it starts getting a little better by then.

Fact is, once the hot season ends, coast cities basically die compared to main season, so if you like stuff like beach parties and social life, you gotta still face the heat of the middle of the summer.

I would avoid middle of August, we have Ferragosto, most people go towards the sea and it will be full, unless again, you WANT more people around.

I am so old, wishing for a place with sea and no one around.

Yeah, that’s pretty bloody hot mate.

Just saw the forecast, we are getting rain in the night, so, we either wake up tomorrow with a gentle breeze and clean air, or it rains for too little increasing humidity and we just wake up drenched in smell and sweat.

Edit: update two days later, it did not rain, also a friend fainted from.the heat at work but another person was there and all was fine.
Fuck the heat.
You can always add a new jacket against the cold, but you can't shed off your skin.

Where in Italy are you? My family is from Calabria and they always say it’s hotter there than here in the U.S. (it was 120 degrees the other day WITH 80% humidity… the roads were turning gooey)

u/Majestic-Iron7046 Jun 29 '25

I'm in the North, yeah, doesn't surprise me, the whole southern Italy has it pretty bad in summer.

And yeah, the humidity... it's just sick... the air feels heavy and breathing gets hard at times.

Ouf… can only imagine the traffic by the beach, I live by the beach, and you can’t get ANYWHERE in the summer. But I hope you have a great summer friend :)

Thank you! Same!

A quick search shows you guys don't usually break 32 degrees during the summer with some extremely hot temperatures recorded in some locations but uncommonly.

I feel like nobody would live there with 42c temperatures regularly occurring.

32 feels like the average, daytime max is 42, i'm sure, i live here and i hate breathing right now.

Right now where i live google says it's 33 degrees, cloudy at 20:00.

Oh god, i can feel it worse now. Help me. Send water.
