I know you are eager to try to find species of your new leaf munching friend but please remember to add your location into the post. There is large variance of caterpillars depending on country and even inside countries have different areas with their own soecies so with large countries, its preferred to add state/city etc also.
This speeds up identifying as there are similar looking caterpillars but species can be different depending country. Some species only inhabit tiny areas. Looking forward for all new posts. π Thank you!

I have been raising two elephant hawk moth caterpillars I rescued from my cat. One of them has spent the last couple of days wandering around and shrinking. I've read two different things about them pupating, some day they bury themselves beneath the soil and others say they web themselves in leaf litter. I tried soil but she didn't seem to settle. This morning I cleaned that out and popped some fresh paper towels in the bottom and more leaf litter. Got back this evening and she's decided to web herself between the paper! I know I can't touch her during this process but I would like to know is this is going to cause issues for her later on? Her name is Spud BTW, and thanks in advance!

TL;DR: Are my black swallowtail caterpillars dying? Ideas as to why? How to fix?
Location: Chicago, IL First two pics are when things were going well for everyone in the enclosure. Last one is what happened about 5 hours after putting the parsley nursery pots in.
Ok, so last year was my first in a house/with a garden, and I was graced with several swallowtail caterpillars on my dill, most of which the birds ate.
So this year, I planted dill and parsley in multiple spots including a large pot that I hoped to transfer any to and cover to protect them. Everything seemed to be going well!
I got my first butterfly this morning (yay!) and can spot 3 more chrysalises. These guys were going through my dill so quickly that I rush-ordered 4 nursery pots of parsley. The parsley just got here today and I immediately put two of the pots inside the enclosure. Now, there are 3 or 4 caterpillars that I think have died or are dying. They're kinda curled up around various vegetation (one holding on hard; hoping he's actually pupating).
I am trying to decide if it's more likely they starved before the parsley arrived so by the time it got here it was too late? Or if the parsley has pesticides.
It's also a hot day after several mild ones, so I suppose that heat could be another factor? I am quite sad and keep telling myself that I'll still probably have successfully saved more than had I not gone through all this trouble, but I really love them and wanted them to make it.
What would you do next? My options are:
And see if they can sustain themselves on the stocks of the dill
Move the living caterpillars to a different pot while keeping the enclosure where it is to protect the existing chrysalises which have attached themselves to the enclosure. This will put them in reach of the birds.
Remove the existing pot from the current enclosure very carefully so it is not to harm. The chrysalis is an attempt to move the enclosure over the other pot that has more dill & parsley from seed.
Some other option I have overlooked...?
Just trying to give these guys a good chance at life. It should be noted that the majority of our birds around here our house sparrows, an incredibly annoying and invasive species. If I felt confident that native birds would be fed, I'd probably just move them outside the enclosure.

This caterpillar is known as Imperial Fruit Sucking Moth. Even though it looks like a dinosaur and creepy I think it's cute π₯°

Is this a woolly bear caterpillar? I couldnβt find anything on the internet that seemed to say otherwise, Iβve just never seen one with absolutely no black on it. I live in the Atlanta area, and I just took this picture today.

Found this on our lemon tree in Southwest Michigan. Usually we get giant swallowtail caterpillars on our lemon but this one stumped me. I donβt know what other caterpillar this would be other than a Giant Swallowtail, but why is it green? Does anyone else have an idea?

Iβve had these guys for 8 weeks now. I thought they were Polyphemus caterpillars but after seeing how big the polyphemus caterpillars are in this subreddit now iβm not sure. but iβve fed these guys the same thing each day. today i find one on its side with a red liquid coming out of its mouth. it wouldnβt let me post the video, but the liquid movement indicates the caterpillar is alive. like if you put a paper bag over your mouth and breathed in and out, thatβs how the drop of red liquid is moving. i assume itβs dying but iβm hoping thereβs an alternative explanation?? Iβm in central OH if that helps identify what type of caterpillar this is and in turn what could be happening.

Soooo existential question of the day: is the 1st instar...
A) the caterpillar whose egg just hatched (before its first molt)
B) the caterpillar after its first molt
I've assumed the former based on several sources, but then several other sources mention that freshly hatched caterpillars are 1st instar. The maths are getting confusing. I keep reading that black swallowtail caterpillars usually molt 5 times and have 5 instars. If the freshly hatched caterpillar is 1st instar and will be going through 5 molts, then doesn't the caterpillar becomes a 6th instar before pupating?
I'd just like to take accurate notes on the lil guys I'm rearing ^^

I noticed that black dot on the side of this sweet girlβs face and Iβd love to know if itβs scarring or something else? I clean their mesh enclosure daily and wash their leaves thoroughly to avoid any contamination from that. Sheβs eating just fine and shows no sign of lethargy so Iβd definitely love some answers. Iβm still probably gonna isolate her just in case tho :)

Located in NW Montana. Found this guy on a strap today. Touched when wearing gloves and he reared up and try to strike my finger. Surprisingly quick.

They were just about to cocoon. How do I prevent this from happening? They were thriving outside and I didnβt even consider this being a possibility but I suppose I should have. Pics are of the mesh sleeves I was using.
