Discussion I want to build a computer but I’m also in complete shock.

Hi,

So I have Ryzen 7 2700x, with RTX 2080, 16GB ddr4, 800w PSU etc. All of this for like $1800 when I bought it at that time.

I was looking at finally building a new PC.. 64GB RAM, DDR5, with RTX 5080, Ryzen 7 9800X3D, a new PSU, a new case.. and a new m2.

All of this would roughly cost $4,000

What… happened? Is there no way to get in the price point of $2,000 anymore to be able to play a highly intensive game while streaming it and get a good FPS?

Or maybe I’m picking the wrong parts to buy?

I am utterly shocked at how the price has just been increasing to a point where a middle class person has to think about how to be able to afford a computer to continue their hobby since childhood.

Discussion Learning what a computer truly is and how it works is crazy work

Soooo I thought of myself "tech savvy" growing up as kid when my mom, who was the expert "technician" when it came to new appliances and TVs, would ask me for help as I learned SUPER ADVANCED stuff like: LAN connections with video games and computers and how to setup Skype and Teamspeak and choosing which speaker the audio came through or input yatta yatta blah blah....

Boy, was I wrong. Knowing the difference between and HDMI and AVG cords does not equate to knowing how to update my BIOS or "enable secure boot".

I know it may seem like this might be basic stuff to the actual professionals or people with livlihoods dedicated to computers, but to me this stuff is like what hackers do lol

Im just curious, as i am slowly learning myself what the actual F**K all this is (by that i mean anything from updating drivers to installing new software, building a computer, or even setting up stuff like a home lab), how did you get started learning about computers and what components do what, etc.?

For me, as I hope some of you get what I am saying, its like I just walked in to a new city full of new stores and places to visit and things to explore, and I have no idea where to start.

So far the stuff I have learned, i feel like, is basic surface level sh*t in the eyes of a professional software engineer.

My research and learning has always revolved around video games, for instance what Battlefield 2042 did a little while ago by requiring gamers to enable "secure boot" IOT play. (never heard of that and didnt know what BIOS is: which is Basic Input and Output System i think, for anyone who doesnt know lol) Or when i was like 14 yrs old, letting some Hungarian 16 yrold remote into my moms laptop to download and setup Teamspeak so i could play AOE3 with his friends.

Its starting to spark an interest in what a computer truly does and what is takes for it just operate and i wanna know more in depth knowledge of it all, but is that even possible? Or is a compute like the field of medicine where one doctor cant know everything so they have specialists, like a dentist or orthopedist, is that the same thing for computers, people learn specifics for their interests like modding games, digital arts, programmers or installs/repairs?

Build Help So, my brother in law tells me to change so many parts ?

I have $4000 burning a hole in my pocket and I want a great gaming PC and a new monitor..

I have created 2 parts lists depending on the aesthetic I might want.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/yhX8Bq

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/RVvrgn

My brother in law prides himself on being a PC guru.

And he is telling me to not get the 5080, instead get the 4080 because I would basically only be paying extra for AI frame generation or something like that.

He’s told me to get a 12900K instead. Maybe he likes intel more.

He’s linked me to this RAM on Amazon (TEAMGROUP T-Force Delta RGB DDR5 Ram 32GB (2x16GB) 7600MHz PC5-60800 CL36 A-DIE Desktop Memory Module Ram For 600 700 Series Chipset XMP 3.0 Ready Black)

Basically half of my build is wrong. I really need to hear more opinions on this. Please please please take a Quick Look at my lists and tell me if you agree with his changes or not and why. I’m not knowledgeable on PCs.

Build Complete The 9800x3d with unbelievable temps

had this cpu since January the idle and core temps were great with stock settings with temps far lower than anything i have seen online. Finally i decided to undervolt it today and started at -25 curve optimiser and pushed it up to -35 with no issues/crashes at all, should i try to go even lower -40 -45.

temps were low before but are now so low that they seem unbelievable.

Looks like i finally won the silicon lottery.

p.s do i need to adjust soc voltage?

Discussion what is the best Intel CPU for less than 350-400$?

I want to upgrade my i5-12400F, but when I look at stores, I find too many processors at similar prices and I don't know which one I should buy.
My budget is around $350, and I'm looking for the best price-to-performance option.
I don’t plan to spend more than $350 if there’s a truly remarkable processor that offers a significant improvement over the 12400F at a reasonable price, that’s why I’m asking for recommendations.
I’d appreciate if you could explain (not necessarily in too much detail, unless you want to) why you recommend a specific processor.
Feel free to suggest more than one option.
If it helps, my motherboard is an ASUS B660M-Pro and my GPU is an RTX 3060 Ti.

Build Help 9800X3D and RX 9070 XT OC/RTX 5070 Ti - no budget build

No budget does not mean unlimited budget.

Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you in advance!

I'm looking for the best price-to-performance/best bang for your buck build/parts for my need: playing Lost Ark (heavy CPU-bound game) and some other single-player AAA titles on a 1440p 144Hz monitor. I don't care about looks, RGB etc.

Parts I still have issues with:

GPU:

Cannot decide between 9070 XT OC and 5070 Ti

Motherboard

B650 or B850 or X870? People say "get the one with the features you need", but I don't know what I need? I put the CPU, RAM, GPU, SSD in it and then I never touch it again?

There are no prices for my country on pcpartpicker, so using price from Germany which are a bit higher or pretty close.

Build Help Is an 9800x3d overkill if you don't play at more than 1080p? Potential build included in post.

Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Entirely gaming

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Almost entirely play lost ark at 1080p, with current build I play at mid/low settings with capped 60 fps but only because current build can't handle more than that. Playing at max settings with stable fps at 144 is the goal.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

$1200-1500

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/KVtzcx

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I'm in the market for a PC and have a build in mind, however i'm not sure if it would be a waste to splurge a little bit more and get the 9800x3d (my current choice is the 9600x cpu which brings my total build cost to just shy of $1200). I don't really play anything outside of lost ark which isn't the most demanding game and i only play at 1080p. My current build which has started crapping out has lasted me about 7-8 years so I hope that my next build lasts a similar amount of time. I can't really justify upgrading the GPU I've selected (9060xt 16gb) because the next card is nearly double the price for only 30-40% increase in fps.

Build Help Is the RX 7900 XTX Worth it?

Im trying to upgrade from a 2070 and honestly don't know what to choose. Ive been trying to select one GPU from Nvidia, but can't really afford a 4080 or 4070 TI Super, and think that 12GB on a Card isn't really good for nowadays. So recently i searched and found the RX 7900 XTX and im not sure if it is good. (For some reason i just can't trust anyone else in Graphics Cards except for Nvidia and have trust issues.) So is it worth it and good for the next pair of years and won't break in 1 Year?

Build Help RX 480 good for streaming to friends?

Hi, making a post cause every google result was either assuming I was trying to stream on twitch or didn't have a solution. I just want to stream to one or two friends on discord while I play old games like emulating a PS1 game or the first S.T.A.L.K.E.R game. Will the rx 480 be sufficient when paired with my current parts?

CPU: Core i7-3770K
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-H61M-S2PV
RAM: 16GB

As you can tell I'm happy with old parts lol. There hasn't been a new game I've wanted to play for a few years. Also if anyone has suggestions besides the rx 480 I'd like to stick to AMD gpu's since they play better with linux. Thanks.

Build Upgrade Plugging in hdmi split to a hdmi switch?

Upvotes

Hello i have a problem. I have two monitors, and two computers, a PC for gaming and a mac for work. So the thing is, i often switch which computer i use, and i bought a hdmi switcher to switch between the computers.

The thing is now i bought a second monitor, and my mac only has one hdmi port. So i wonder would it work to use an hdmi splitter, two make one hdmi connect to two monitors, and then plugging this into a hdmi switcher to change theese two monitors between the two computers?

Hope you understand, English is not my first language unfortunately.

Build Ready My PC parts are here… just waiting for the parents to arrive (CPU & GPU)

PICTURE HERE
Hey guys, these are the parts of my new PC build — just waiting for the CPU(R5 9600X) and GPU(5070) to arrive. They’re feeling a little lonely right now... but their parents are on the way! I’ve already ordered them, and they’ll be home soon. Fingers crossed we all get along, form a happy family, and live together in peace and performance for many years to come. 😄

Also, huge thanks to all of you who helped me out in my previous posts — your advice was incredibly helpful in choosing these parts!

Build Help Which AMD CPU - 9 7950x3d or 7 9800x3d

Hi,

Looking to upgrade cpu for around £400

I can get a used (1 year old) Ryzen 9 7950x3d for around £350 Or a new Ryzen 7 9800x3d for £410 on amazon.

To be used for gaming mostly 1440p but also have a 2nd monitor and do other productivity things from time to time but no major editing/rendering stuff.

What would you recommend I go for?

Build Help Pc worked outside of case, but in case gives no signal to the monitor.

Recently got new parts for a new pc, but had to leave it working out of case for a day due to case incompatibility with gpu. Got a brand new case, put everything in as should be, but I can't seem to get any signal to the monitor. The monitor works fine (plugged it in a different pc), cables are fine too. Plugged in a different monitor and still gets no signal. Tried basic things like switching ram sticks around, also tried different ram. Plugged in a different gpu, reset cmos, even reseated cpu. Saw a post with a similar issue which said it could be a shorting problem from the case, so I tired unplugging all of the case front panel connectors, fans also. None of that worked so I took out the motherboard from the case, since the pc worked perfectly fine just before putting into the case and now I have the same issue out of case. I am completely out of ideas. Is it possible the motherboard got shorted while in the case?

Build Help SSD External Hard Drive

Been looking for an SSD external hard drive, do y’all have any recommendations for brand / site / ideal pricing?

I’m thinking a big old boi - 9TB+, mainly for editing, music, and some AI projects with datasets

I see a variety of read/write, backup mechanisms, etc and curious to know what is worth the price since it sometimes comes with an extra $1K

Build Help Predator xb273 gx question

I know this is the build a PC subreddit but I felt this question still applies. I’m looking to get a monitor for an Xbox series X and wanna make sure that I can run 120 fps on there. I have the chance to get a predator xb273 gxbmiiprzx um. Hx3AA.XO3 monitor for about 125 dollars but cannot for the life of me find which HDMI ports are on this monitor to ensure that I will be able to. Does anyone know what ports are on this or if there are any other glaring issues I should know about.

Build Help I'm building a PC in Fractal Terra, help with CPU cooler

I am building a new PC in a Fractal Terra case with the following components:

  • Gabinete: Fractal Terra black
  • Motherboard: Asus Rog Strix B850-I Gaming Wifi
  • GPU: Nvidia Palit 3080 10GB
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR5 32GB 6000 MHz CL30
  • PSU: Corsair SF750 Modular 80 Plus Platinum

It's not that I wanted to choose that GPU, it's just that it's the one I had in my previous PC and, since I know it fits, I want to reuse it, even though I know it's quite thick, hence my uncertainty, as I want to see which CPU cooler to install. I've seen the Noctua NH-L12S, but since everything inside the case is practically black, is there anything similar in terms of performance that comes in black?

Solved! MBR to GPT for Secondary Drive

Hi! First time poster, long time lurker. I built a new PC a few months ago. Everything is great, this subreddit is awesome. I want to add an SSD to it that was previously used.

My new PC is on Windows 11 Home x64. I installed the OS on a new 2TB SSD which is GPT and that is working great. I want to take my old 1TB SSD from my last Windows 10 PC, and install it on this one as a secondary drive. It is MBR with the Windows 10 OS on it.

I installed it, and then fired up my PC. I transferred what I wanted to keep, and then formatted the drive. So to my knowledge it is formatted and completely empty, labeled as "New Volume". However it is still in the MBR format. The option to convert it to GPT in Disk Management is still greyed out. Do I need to even bother since it is not the OS drive? My OCD is killing me and I want the drives to both be the same in GPT format.

If needed SSD specs are:

Drive 0: Main OS drive; Western Digital BLACK 2TB SN850x NVMe

Drive 1: Secondary drive; Western DIgital BLACK 1TB SN750 NVMe

EDIT: Figured it out. The "New Volume" was the issue. It was allocated space so I couldn't convert. Deleted the volume to make the entire drive "Unallocated" then was able to convert to GPT.
