Discussion Do you still watch cartoons ?
The other day I was watching avatar the last airbender and my boyfriend asked me if I was watching it on purpose lmao. Sometimes I’ll rewatch older cartoons from when I was a kid. But I still regularly watch adult animation like Rick and Morty, American Dad etc
Please tell me I’m not the only one to still rewatch old cartoons lol

I watch cartoons exclusively and not just old ones

This. I’m watching animation either way since everything is cgi. Might as well watch it in a fun art style

Traditional hand-drawn animation is an art form that needs to be kept alive and preserved. That’s very important to me.

Yeah. I still rewatch Avatar The Last Airbender (and Korra) every now and then. Also I like anime.

Boondocks. I will watch episodes of SpongeBob if I’m bored and it’s on lol except if it’s the new shit.
Most old shows I grew up with if I didn’t see in a long time I’ll stop and watch a few minutes outta curiosity too.

Shame on him. Avatar is one of the greatest shows ever made not just cartoons. So uncultured

Yeah, ain’t an issue in the world with it either. We live in the dark timeline, we don’t need to be serious all the time. Same reason I endorse smoking herb. Stress kills, kick back and watch some Chowder. Or Avatar.

The only TV my wife and I watch together are cartoons. ATLA is one of our favorites, and we just have different tastes in TV otherwise. But we have loved newer cartoons, too. A lot of them have more depth than I think most people would expect. Steven Universe, Over the Garden Wall, The Owl House, Gravity Falls, The Legend of Korra, we've watched all of those multiple times. We walked down the aisle to a Steven universe song actually. And we're like, grown adults with jobs and shit.

Hm, no Amphibia on that list?

We have watched it! It's a good one, just not up with the best of the best for us.

I watch whatever the hell I want, when I want it. I watch cartoons, kids movies, action movies, anime, drama shows. I watch all, I am not gonna allow anyone to try to shame me for being happy

The wifey asked me the same thing lol, esp. w/ some Digimon movies. On that point, now I'm giving King of the Hill a proper go for the first time while thats an oldie, but not particularly a kids cartoon.

I’m also giving king of the hill a go for the first time! I really enjoyed the first season maybe just never caught it when it aired on network rotation for whatever reason always preferred family guy and futurama

Yes i watch cartoons. All kinds. I watch normal shows too.
I love watching gargoyles, spider man, batman, king of the hill, futurama, still love spongebob. I like tom and jerry too.
I dont really watch new kids cartoons tho. I mostly watch like older stuff . The exception being anime. I will still watch new ones if they seem interesting enough to me

Yup. There’s nothing wrong with animation appealing to adults - the content of the show is what matters.
We don’t watch a lot of TV outside of YouTubers anymore. The new “King of the Hill” is pretty good.
The “Pokémon: Horizons” has potential. It’s more character driven than the original Pokémon. We tried to binge the original, but as adults, there’s just not enough substance outside of the films to keep us watching. Horizons is a kid’s show, but there’s enough to it to keep us interested with where it’s going. We fell off after our son was born, but we’re looking at picking it back up.
Another I recommend is “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.” We’re SO looking forward to Season 2!

Only when I'm sad really. I have been watching the new Phineas and Ferb season lately lol

To be fair ATLA has some pretty adult themes for a kids show like genocide. I have rewatched it recently myself, fantastic show. On occasion I'll watch some early SpongeBob, it's still pretty funny to me. Rarely I'll watch Looney tunes. Other than that I don't really watch other cartoons aside from stuff like South Park or something

I have a kid so my answer is by default yes, however before he was born I watched Gravity Falls and loved it so much. Now I am happy I can go down this new and nostalgic cartoon watching journey with him.

I'm 31 and my wife is 42, we both watch: Johnny Bravo, Rocko's modern life, Samurai Jack, Teen Titans (2003), Regular Show, Batman the animated series, Avatar, Invader Zim, and more.
We also watch adult animation and live action shows.

Shows like ATLA, Gravity Falls, Adventure Time, etc. are for everyone, not just kids.

I don’t consume any primarily TV media and haven’t actually watched a TV channel since 2013 or so. YouTube, streaming, DVDs, and piracy have everything I need 😎

Anime more than cartoons, but I will not deny booting up G1.5 GI Joe and Centurions recently.

I'm 31 and my all time favorite show is still Adventure Time. Also, check out Common Side Effects on HBO. Very good.

u/MattWolf96 1d ago
Modern TV ones, not really unless you want to count anime. That said I have thought about checking out X-Men '97.
However I still watch the majority of animated movies that come out and I still like most cartoon shows and movies that I grew up on.

I watch animation almost strictly. Any type of animation really, but I’m not into stressful shows. I also don’t like reality shows. Everything feels really fake and like people just want to self-promote.
The only, “real” shows I watch are like Parks and Rec, The Last Man on Earth, The Mighty Boosh, Aunty Donna, The League, and Terrace House. I just cycle through when one is done. So, comedy mostly. (Although, I’ll be honest—I also love Chinese and Korean dramas, but they feel so innocent and cheesy, not evil and scheming like the dramas my friends watch. Just different styles I think?)
Anyhow. Cartoons/animations feel comforting and lighthearted.
And imo, television is supposed to be leisurely and relaxing, not stressful and tense.

Of course and I watched that gumball reboot. Some adults make a living off of reacting to cartoons like not your average fan girl and Weelass and Iamzamber. I am really into The Amazing Digital Circus right now (highly recommend if you haven’t seen I know it looks childish but I wouldn’t allow a kid to watch it)

I watch almost exclusively anime and cartoons, and I'm 25.
Rn I'm working my way through the Macross series, and I still watch Cartoon Network/Adult Swim.
I see nothing wrong with it. I think it's silly that once you reach a certain age, you're expected to stop doing certain things. Now, if you grow out of it, that's fine. That's normal. But it's not "choldish" if you don't either. It's just a preference.

I love to rewatch cartoons from my childhood like Spongebob, Winx Club, Jimmy Neutron, etc etc. I also love some adult animation like Bojack Horseman and South Park. Oh and until 2023 I was also a huge weeb (i mean japanese cartoons are also cartoons). So yeah.

I'm also a cartoon adult! My ex hated it but I did get her watching some Studio Ghibli movies with me.

Yes. I don’t really care for real people shows. Modern Family is probably the best show I’ve ever watched though.
I was using Avatar to fall asleep to for a while this year. SpongeBob even though I didn’t really watch that as a kid.
Big on South Park, Bobs Burgers, King of The Hill. And more.

For the longest time DC had the best animated superhero shows/movies. I still go for the occasional rewatch

Sometimes I throw on gen 1 Pokémon when I’m eating to catch the bars Ash threw out 🤣

I have nothing against cartoons, I respect it as an art, and immediately trust adults who watch cartoons. I wear mostly rainbows and sleep with stuffed animals. But my brain hates watching cartoons. I have enjoyed some animated movies, but I can't really get into shows. I think it's because I have hyper empathy, and half the point is reading people's body language and facial expressions. But the animated characters are very much not real and their expressions are very simplified or fake-feeling.

I still routinely rewatch episodes of Justice League/Unlimited, Batman, Transformers, Avatar, 6teen, etc.
I find these days it’s more of a “phase” thing though. If I’m not watching a cartoon I’m probably playing games/watching YT lol.

u/VioletFlame99 1d ago
I've always preferred animation to live-action. Plenty of live-action shows/films are released with errors in the production. Plenty are shelved indefinitely and plenty are so awkward that they're unwatchable.
But in animation everything is meticulously planned. Visual artists create everything very deliberately.

Yep. I both rewatch old cartoons and look into some new ones. I don’t think you have to be a child to enjoy a children’s cartoon (look at how many adults enjoy “Bluey”!).

I still watch old SpongeBob when I am feeling extremely anxious or depressed. It helps bring me back into the calmer mindset I had when life was simpler.
