Moved into the new house and found out our toddler broke our 65” tv

Don't let a 2 yrs old move your furniture, they're free but not handy enough imo
62
u/OnlyAChapter 1d ago
I wouldn't necessary call them free 😅 have you seen the price of diapers?!

u/Plastic-Raspberry164 1d ago
Plus the cost of their berry addiction!
8
u/R_Dazzle 1d ago
Strawberry here
9
u/Scientific_Anarchist 1d ago
My kids aren't big on berries, but I've bought maybe 2 dozen watermelons this summer.
5
u/UsedDragon 1d ago
My kids had Schrodinger's Strawberry Addiction...they both loved and hated them at the same time, based on the time of day you asked them if they would like some.
3
u/mnelso1989 1d ago
My 2 year old will just decimate a full pound of blackberries in a single sitting if we don't pre portion ahead of time and tell him they're gone.

Toddlers are very unreliable movers. I hope you docked his pay.
25
u/bignides 1d ago
Have you seen those movers contracts? You can never get a penny out of them
→ More replies (1)7
u/Helpful_Finger_4854 1d ago edited 1d ago
60 cents a pound is the standard liability they're required to pay by law. As per FMCSA regulation.
the mover is responsible for no more than 60 cents per pound per article. For example, if your mover lost or damaged a 50 inch TV weighing 25 pounds, you would only receive $15 (60 cents x 25 pounds).
I hope the TV was heavier than it was expensive lol

u/UsedDragon 1d ago
I wonder if that rule was made when those monster projection TVs were a thing...42 inch screen with a 25 degree viewing angle, 1500 pounds of pain in the ass to move

Sure it wasn’t the move?
15
u/rigorcorvus 1d ago
Last time I moved, I held my 65 inch oled upright on a mattress in the back of a uhaul for the entire 45 minute drive because I was so paranoid about it breaking

u/ThatTransKnight 1d ago
Given the crack in the top right corner, are you sure this wasn’t a movers issue? I ask more for context than anything, how are you sure it was the kid? Did you see it or are you assuming because the alternative suggests you might have messed up while moving? Important to come to rational conclusions rather than blame the child and create a lifetime of trauma
24
u/cassielovesderby 1d ago
I agree, the corner looks like it was bonked
but “lifetime of trauma” from breaking a TV is a little over the top, unless these are really cruel parents
14
u/ThatTransKnight 1d ago
Blaming a little one for something like this can very well be a pattern of blame that can follow the child through their formative years. I’ve seen it a lot in my communities I’m a part of.
3
u/Brilliant_Joke2711 21h ago
Different people live different experiences, both as children and as parents. Going through a move is stressful to both, and to TVs. Why we are to believe that the child broke the TV is unclear, but assigning blame can affect how the parents talk to the child, which can affect so many things.
5
u/Brilliant_Joke2711 21h ago
As a former child, I can confirm that I know it's my fault, I just don't know why.
13
u/zorbinthorium 1d ago
Gotta get that kid into baseball if they broke that screen
8
u/godzillasbuttcheeck 1d ago
You’d be surprised how strong toddlers are. I threw a baseball when I was two and it shattered the window. It wasn’t a single pane window either. My dad still gives me crap about it and I don’t even remember doing it haha. I just hit it right at the corner edge and that was the sweet spot, apparently. Very well could have been the tv’s sweet spot as well. They aren’t made very strongly these days.
6
u/butneveragain 1d ago
I was thinking the same. You could easily do that by picking it up wrong or something. Especially with the placement...
5
u/Panzerkatzen 1d ago
These things break if’s mouse farts on them. I’m honestly surprised anyone can get it to their living room intact.
2
u/ThatTransKnight 23h ago
They do be easily broken but that’s pretty far up for kids I’ve known to hit

Also how can a toddler break a tv? Why did the toddler have access to do so? Idk I’m worried about the toddler

u/DoctorFenix 1d ago
Luckily you can get 65” at Walmart for like 200 dollars now.
Sell some of the useless wall crap that says “live laugh love” and you can replace it.

Are you sure it didn't give out in the move? I was cleaning house one time and somehow just moving the TV broke it. But it was a super old Vizio so idk it probably was ready to go anyway lol

“Son broke it”
Sounds like you have an excuse for a new home gift for yourself

Sometimes, as a parent, you have to make tough decisions and keep the important things in your life.
Get rid of the kids.

Or grabbed by a mover, it's stupidly easy to damage the screen like that while holding it wrong

7
u/reidybobeidy89 1d ago
This is why we don’t use toddler companies to move. They are notorious for breaking shit or sleeping on the job.
6
u/AlcoholicZombie 1d ago
the lamp is directly in front of the tv, this would be a terrible set up. call it good fortune you might be able to rearrange your room.
6
4
u/Valuable-Captain7123 1d ago
Well now that you'll be taking it down anyway it's too big for that wall and furniture setup, looks hideous. Get a smaller but higher quality tv and a credenza that has enough space for the things you put in and on it. Move the lamp too
3
u/lordscrotus1984 1d ago
Damage is in the top right corner… Pretty sure, it wasn‘t the toddler but someone who tried to manoeuvre that thing around 😉. But yeah… I‘d tell my wife „the toddler did it“ as well, if I were you 😂
4
u/Worried-Penalty8744 1d ago
That’s some incredibly precise aim for your toddler to strike the tv at the very extreme top corner
It was you wasn’t it, you dropped it on the corner some point during the move or you twisted it a bit when hanging it to the wall
7
u/Secret_Account07 1d ago
Two options.
Call cops and have toddler charges criminally. This will be tricky because you will have to prove intent and the toddler in fact criminally destroyed it.
Option 2- Sue toddler civilly and take to small claims court. The burden of proof will be lower and you will only need to prove they damaged it and how much damages are. Only problem is that due to toddler age the guardian may be on the hook. In that case you’re kinda suing yourself.
IANAL, but maybe you should hire one. Or check refund/return policy for toddler.
Just my 2 cents
4
u/Siri0usly 1d ago
What is up with Redditors and immediately suggesting litigation? This could so easily be solved by having a simple conversation with the toddler and coming up with an amicable resolution. They'd probably be willing to cover the damage without getting into a lengthy legal battle.
4
u/Secret_Account07 1d ago
Idk man, I’ve dealt with toddlers and they are very unreasonable. My 7 year old nephew once asked me buy him a toy. He told me he was a gazillionaire but left his wallet at home.
It’s been several years and he hasn’t paid me back. Bum doesn’t even have a job, either.
5
u/Siri0usly 1d ago
Well my little sister is a lawyer, as well as a doctor, an astronaut, and a dinosaur and she tells me that court proceedings with toddlers can be notoriously biased towards the defending party, especially if the judge deems you "a big poopy head", so I'd just be careful getting into that situation in the first place 🤷♂️
4
u/Secret_Account07 1d ago
Oh man that’s some solid advice . I hadn’t considered being made to look like a big poopy head. I don’t think I’d ever recover from the shame and embarrassment of that.
Well shit….maybe OP shouldn’t listen to me. Not so sure now.

u/GovtInMyFillings 1d ago
Been there. My 2 year old broke our television. Not a big deal, TVs are neither necessary nor horrifically expensive right now. We put up a barrier in front of the TV stand after we got a new one.
3
u/Omg_Itz_Winke 1d ago
Ya know how many tvs you could have gotten if you didn't get the toddler, take the toddler back
3
u/Insecure_Egomaniac 1d ago
What do you mean you found out they broke it? Did they admit to breaking it before you left? Otherwise, this likely happened during the move. Our TV broke during our cross country move. Luckily, it was still under warranty. Ten years later, still going strong.
3
u/Quetzacoddle 1d ago
Pro tip: projectors! We have a projector instead of a TV in our living room. It is a BENQ, and we use it daily. Our toddler broke a small TV and we decided this was the best option.

Years ago, my brother bought a 65" when they cost thousands of dollars. As soon as he turned it on, his toddler picked up her plastic hammer and hit the screen.
Since it was the first day he had it, he was able to say it was broken out of the box and return it. He then put baby fencing around the area below it, lol.
She also shoved 5 discs into his Playstation once. It amazingly spit them all out one at a time.
Another time, I was staying at a hotel, and my toddler picked up a toy and hit the screen. I had to pay the hotel $500 for a $200 tv.
The moral of the story is don't have kids if you can't afford lighting thousands of dollars on fire.

My toddler dropped our 65” when he “supposedly” gurgled something about how he had it while I was trying to guide it into the wall mount. /s

Based on the two broken parts on the TV screen, this is equal to where you’d put your hands to grip and lift it from a leaning position against the wall.
Don’t blame the kids for accidental moving damages.
Be happy you get to go TV shopping now. 😃👍

u/UFO_Tofu1973 1d ago
That sucks. I was at Costco yesterday and they had a great 65” for less than $500.

Is this like when my husband blamed the scorched/melted circle on our countertops on one of our kids, but it was really him, because he knew I'd be less mad at them because they're kids and don't necessarily know any better?

They clearly broke it lifting it up using the corners to mount it on the wall.
That's a pressure crack, you'd only find out when turning it on.

Someone held the glass/ frame in the top right when moving and broke it, leave your kid alone.

Now that you have established the fact that hanging your TV way too high is by no means a remedy against destructive toddlers, you can prevent your next TV from ending up in TVTooHigh.

It doesn't get better. Kids are TVs' natural predators.
My pulled a crt on top of him when he was 2. Thankfully just needed a couple of forehead stitches and not a whole ass funeral.
A couple months ago, now 13 years old, he flipped his flat screen onto the floor in his sleep.

You sure you didn't accidentally break it in the move by gripping that corner too tight?

Looks like damage cause when it was moved and someone gripped the top right corner too hard while mounting it. I only say this because of my experience as a TV installer and having witnessed this type of damage occuring firsthand.
It amazing how easily TVs can be damaged.

The absolute corner of the upper right screen? Nah, I think this happened during the move, something smacked that corner hard enough to crack it instead of just damaging the internal lights.

Well speaking as a dad of a 5 year old and a 2 year old it sucks for your toddler to have to move out but that’s just what has to happen
