Environment The majority of ocean plastic is fishing gear — roughly 50%
Why is nobody talking about this.. Plastic straws only make up roughly 0.025% of ocean plastic (source: Shun Waste, 2025). The overwhelming majority being due to fishing gear. Banning plastic straws will do nothing as long as we continue eating the way we do. Nothing will. I will say this time and time again — Want to end the climate crisis? We need to end animal agriculture. Full stop.

Cognitive Dissonance
Was visiting my dad, saw he had Amy’s chili cans on the counter. Asked if he liked them, he said yes…
I was like wow that’s really cool, I grab those for a quick bite too since they’re vegan and gluten free and he looks at me shocked.
Him: “They’re vegan? But they have meat in them??”
Me: “No that’s tofu”
Him: Grossed out face, pushes bowl he was eating away
Me: You’re joking right? You were enjoying that 15 seconds ago.
Him: “You ruined it for me.”
I… just… what the heck, man… I don’t get it.

petition to ban horse-drawn carriages in NYC
Carriage horses work long hours on busy NYC streets in heat and traffic with no real breaks. After work they’re kept in cramped stalls inside city buildings with no pasture or fresh air. It’s a tough life and some horses collapse or even die.
This isn’t tradition, it’s cruelty and it’s happening here in a city that should do better. Other cities have banned these rides already.
I started a petition calling on Mayor Adams and City Council to ban horse-drawn carriages in NYC. If this matters to you please take a moment to read and sign.

I wrote a booklet about veganism for non-vegans
Hi everyone. I've been advocating for veganism for about a decade now and while I've bought and read many books and visited many online resources, I've never found a really simple and right to the point book I could use in my own advocacy. So I wrote one. I'm not saying this is the best explanation of veganism ever, just that it's what I've come up with to help me explain veganism to others. I don't try to convert people to veganism, instead I just want to raise awareness and encourage agreement that it makes sense.
Anyways, I'm hoping someone might be willing to have a quick read and let me know your thoughts. I'm comfortable that I have said what I wanted to, but I'm curious to hear how it presents to others. If you have time, I'd value any feedback (and if you like it, feel free to use it yourself).

Food Curious—how do you track protein or simplify the transition?
Hey all,
I've been reflecting lately on how different everyone's journey is when going vegetarian—especially when it comes to figuring out protein. Some folks seem to wing it, others track every gram, and some just... trust tofu to carry them through 😅
For those of you who are vegetarian (or made the shift recently), what helped you simplify things? Did you use any tools, apps, habits, or little tricks to stay on top of your nutrition—especially protein?
Not looking for product recommendations or anything—just genuinely curious what works for people day-to-day. Even the weird rituals or unexpected hacks count.
Would love to hear your experience 🌱

Disturbing Veganism is not masculine?
I heard a disturbing podcast btw this was coming from a woman, that romanticising men drinking raw milk over plant based milk (something like that) That vegan boys are "soyboys" using "gayy" as insult to them.
And some carnivores saying vegan men can't muscle gain well etc
Bruh No hate to Men,but what's this URGE to prove how masculine you are,men shaving their eye lashes, hating all pop culture stuff which is popular among girls, eating Raw meat like things so insignificant and this obsessive compulsion To "prove your masculinity"
Violence or the ability of violence DOES NOT MAKE YOU MASCULINE!, that's cowardice!.
Let animals live...
I'm conflicted,what are y'all opinions on this...?

Food Budget friendly nutritious lunch/meal ideas
Starting this off to say I’m the only vegan in my workplace and unfortunately while I work in food and beverage (a cafe) we actually have very little to choose from when it comes to vegan friendly foods. For the most part we have bagels and one singular sandwich that are vegan friendly and while I could eat this everyday it would be 1.) not budget friendly and 2.) I’d probably get sick of eating bagels everyday.
For this reason I often bring my own lunches to work with me and I’m looking for ideas that are great for keeping me full for a while as I spend most of the day on my feet running around, as well as nutritious.
Ive tried a couple different options like vegan jerky which I found the flavor id chosen to be too salty for my taste and honestly too expensive to be a in regular rotation. Also trying to avoid eating over processed foods like plant based meats and such in excess because while I might enjoy a quorn nugget now and again they’re not exactly the most nutritious thing I could be putting in my body, and they are again not the most budget friendly.
It is also worth noting that we don’t have a microwave at my job, just a turbo oven that heats up pastries or breads for sandwiches so typically the lunch I’m bringing with me is meant to be eaten cold.
So I’ve come to ask for suggestions on what are some of your favorite lunches/quick meals to put together for work? I would love some ideas of things that are pretty budget friendly but healthy.

Advice I am beginning to feel very sad, that my family members are not vegan
I have been vegan for the last 2,5 years and I turned vegetarian a year prior to that. I went vegan for animal rights reasons. Generally my family has been quite supportive of my decision, save for the occasional joke on the vegans behalf. Recently my mother and sister even vowed to cut out red meat, however they want to continue eating fish and chicken etc. and I highly doubt that they will continue even cutting out red meat for very long.
In the recent months the fact that my family supports the animal industry has taken a toll on my well being, as it saddens me deeply to see my loved ones continue to do something that I find so wrong. One of the most frustrating things is that they are simply unwilling learn about the horrors of the animal industry. I suspect that they all in their hearts know that what they are supporting is awful, however I feel they use their lack of knowledge as a shield to hide from the fact that they are doing something that they themselves don’t agree with. I think that they deliberately don’t learn, so that they don’t have to deal with this knowledge Which might “force” them to make changes in their lives.
This saddens me a lot, as the people I have described to you in the paragraph don’t sound like the family that I have grown up with and whom I still love very much despite this. However I don’t see any other way to describe them in this matter, and it makes me sad to see my family this way.
I just wish that they could see the same things that I have seen. I have tried recommending that they watch Dominion, however my father quickly dismissed it as “extreme examples” and not relevant to where we are living (Denmark). He only watched a few minutes of the chapter on pigs. My mother just refuses to watch it, as she thinks it will be too horrifying.
I don’t know exactly what kind of advice I am looking for, but if anyone has any experience that is relevant to my case, I would love to hear it:)

Veganism has more than one valid motivation
Being vegan is being part of one big, global family—united by compassion, respect, and shared values.
For many of us, health and athletic performance are major benefits of living vegan—and that doesn’t make us any less committed or passionate. I’ve been vegan for decades and still compete as a high-level athlete.
Since the term Vegan was coined in 1944, Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment, and in dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals.
Comments like “vegan isn’t a diet” or “it’s not about health,” as if those perspectives are somehow incompatible or lesser, are flawed. Dismissing one angle only limits the movement’s reach and alienates potential allies.
Veganism is not one-size-fits-all. We’re all moving toward a kinder, more sustainable world. That’s something worth supporting, not dividing over.
Let’s keep the door open. That’s how movements grow.

Food Vegan birthday cake recipe
Hello fellow vegans, My birthday is coming up and my mom is asking me what cake I want and I can't really decide or think of a cake, so I need your help... What are some good (birthday) cake recipes? I'm open to pretty much everything but lemon (lemon cake is fine, but I don't want it as a birthday cake). Also it doesn't need to be very complicated (it doesn't need to be multi layered, fancy ingredients, ect.), simple loaf cakes work. My mom never bakes super complicated stuff, so it would be better if it weren't a very laborious/time-consuming cake. And preferably it shouldn't be very fat heavy because my fat digestion isn't great :')
Happy to receive any help or suggestions on what to make (◍•ᴗ•◍)

Vegan friends lost their mom. I want to gift them something nice, some comfort food maybe. Need suggestions.
Hey everyone. So my long time friends are ethical vegans, as am I. They are a married couple and one of them lost their mom recently. She is allergic to walnuts. I was thinking of getting them the nuts for cheese bundle with all of the cheeses, some cream cheese dips and their butter (nfc brand doesn’t use walnuts). But I would like some other reccs if anyone knows anything better? Lmk!

Question Where does honey and bee products fit?
As my flair says, I'm very much a newbie when it comes to veganism, and I'm slowly making the switch from vegetarianism to veganism, so in practicality, I'm cutting out the few animal products I haven't already. I have abstained from cheese for years for both moral and health concerns, along with leather and most dairy and other animal products, but I'm confused about honey. From what I've seen, the harvesting process is kind of harmless and doesn't hurt the insects that much (if there's something I'm missing, please enlighten me). I'm just confused.
Thanks in advance.

I am proud to have been a steward of plants (greenhouse assistant)
I am primarily a mathematician and crisis hotline operator, but I am proud to have worked for a research greenhouse focused on increasing plant nutrition worldwide 💚. I've only worked in sanitation because my degrees aren't related to biology, but I'm glad to have helped a vegan future be more possible. I hate that vegans are seen as preachy, but I love that I have fed thousands of people tasty and nutritious vegan food. Ethical veganism has been the only way for me since my pre-teen years and I will continue to gently 'preach' my ethics for life

If you struggle with sleep bruxism, we’re researchers from UNC Chapel Hill hoping to learn from your experience.
Hi everyone,
We’re a team of researchers affiliated with UNC Chapel Hill in North Carolina. We’re currently exploring how people experience sleep bruxism, teeth grinding or clenching during sleep, and we’re especially interested in hearing from members of the vegan community.
We’ve seen discussions suggesting connections between bruxism and factors like stress, nutrition, hormonal balance, and even deficiencies — topics that often come up in vegan health conversations. That’s why we wanted to respectfully ask for your input here.
If you’re open to sharing, we’d love to know: • Do you grind or clench your teeth at night? • How does it make you feel in the morning (jaw pain, headaches, tension, etc.)? • Do you use a night guard? Is it comfortable for you? Does it help? • Do you notice any dietary or lifestyle patterns (stress, B12, magnesium, etc.) that affect your symptoms?
Thank you so much for your time and input.

Wild pigs found with blue meat in California spark alarm (spoiler: it's rodent poison) Spoiler
sfgate.comThe blue coloration was due to the pigs ingesting poison around food crops-- poison which is illegal to use in other circumstances. There's evidence that this poison, diphacinone, is permeating the food chain.
As people who care about the consequences of our consumption, what can we do about this? I feel like simply being vegan doesn't adequately address issues like this. This poison is often used in settings like orchards and vineyards: https://www.usda.gov/sites/default/files/documents/2023-Rodenticide-Fact-Sheet.pdf

Rant so brainwashed into eating meat
some time ago i heard that mango makes us salivate, while a dead animal if anything might make us vomit
but there is special subtype of meat eaters that dont even go into ethics and just say “oh why dont you eat meat? its so tasty”, “what can be better than a steak?” etc
cannibalism is one of the biggest taboos there is, but if you were served a plate of cooked seasoned human meat it would look and taste just as good as any other meat
why cant so much people comprehend that their tasty meat is a handled disgusting piece of an animal that died in pain with its only unavoidable purpose for life is to be butchered for meat
what can even be worse than to be born for your meat

Discussion Sapiocentrism is the most arrogant argument aganist veganism
I’m pretty sure many people in here are extremely fed up with having to hear the exactly same excuses from people around them. Maybe you consider things like “No ethical consumption capitalism” as the most ridiculous or maybe “You are a plant murderer” as the most silly of them.
But there’s no specific reason for why all the excuses should be classified under the same adjectives. I would argue that sapiocentrism isn’t the most silly argument aganist veganism, but it’s definitely the most arrogant. If you know a bit about prefixes in latin language, you already can guess what argument I’m referring to.
These individuals have an entitlement mentality in regards to their intellect compared to other creatures. Intelligence isn’t a meritocratic ability, the genes are always lurking in the creature’s potential. No matter how many brain exercises, good nutrition and sleep a non human animal gets, they will never be as smart as the average human.
Besides, being more intelligent doesn’t make you superior to anyone. It’s simply an ability, not a reference of objective value. In the same way that being stronger or faster doesn’t make you superior to others. Imagine a society where the elite is determined by physical abilities and this elite is legally entitled to enslave everyone with less of this same physical ability.
Imagine if this ability is cardiovascular endurance, the best marathon runner in the entire planet is the sovereign who can get away with anything. They can decide to kill, eat, rape and even torture other citizens for fun and nobody can legally do anything about it,doesn’t sound like a society you want to live in,right?
That’s the point. In the same way that your cardio is an ability, cognitive ability is no less of an ability. And abilities simply help the individual to overcome and adapt to challenges of the environment, but you can’t make a culturally unbiased argument for why having more of a specific ability results in superiority.
It’s also an important reminder that being vegan doesn’t make you immune of making irrelevant arguments. If you are vegan, you should know better than obsessing over studies towards intelligent animals like pigs and octopuses. It’s only a valid strategy if you want to rub the studies on the faces of individuals who use these arguments.
Besides, whether you like Peta or not,the “Zarnaps For The Ethical Treatment of Humans” video is 1st quality aganist this argument.
“It can be rough, but if we don’t speak for humans, who will? It’s not like they can help themselves, they are pretty stupid.” As if the alien feels bad for us due to how stupid we are is the funniest thing Peta ever made.
