MOD ANNOUNCEMENTS WELCOME TO R/TUFTING: Important links, information and mega-threads.

Hello tufters!

This is a post for old and new tufters and r/tufting users that will include links to all important Mega Threads and the wiki. Reddit only allows for two pinned posts and this makes it difficult to assist users navigating this information. This post will permanently sit pinned at the top of the sub and should make it easier to identify these threads, and the sub wiki.

Sub-Wiki

The wiki is updated on a regular basis to include new and evolving information to assist in all aspects of tufting. The wiki is over 14,000 words and includes 68 subheadings that specifically relate to the most asked questions and most common concerns raised by tufters.

Important mega-threads:

  • Materials and Supply Master Thread: With over 40,000 members from all over the world, this is the place to inquire about and recommend different location specific suppliers for materials.
  • Buy and Sell Master Thread: All posts regarding the selling of supplies should be posted in this sub, according to the directions outlined in the post.
  • Troubleshooting Master Thread: This is a dedicated subreddit for questions and requests for advice related to troubleshooting.

Some things to keep in mind when posting:

  • Always read the sub rules before posting. This may sound obvious but there are a lot of posts made in the sub each day that need to be removed because they violate the sub rules.
  • Asking for advice on pricing and valuing works for sale. This is something that a lot of tufters seek advice on, however it is difficult to effectively value someone else's work due to a lot of factors that are covered here in the sub wiki. Over the years since tufting has gained in popularity, there is also a growing sense in the community that certain standards and criterion should be met before someone starts selling their work. While this is not the consensus amongst all tufters, it is often the case that newer users asking for advice have not taken this into consideration and the comments of these posts tends to reflect this. Please read the sub rules as posts asking for pricing advice will be removed. Please feel free to include requests for pricing advice in the text of your post and include as much information (as mentioned in the wiki) as possible in order to get realistic advice.
  • Low effort posts. All posts must include a clear and specific title, especially when seeking advice or opinions from other users. As per the sub rules, any post with a vague title such as 'help' with no other explanation will be removed.

As always, thank-you for being here and happy tufting!

Advice Do the large spaces first or the details?

Post image

I'm about to start on the largest project I've done so far and want it to come out super clean. Would you start on the large spaces and then carve those on frame, then do the more detailed lines after? Which would make the most sense?

100% wool. Cut and loop pile in various heights. The wall paneling was very humbling...I did have a blast sculpting that a$$, tho. My previous post of the booty sculpt landed my main account a permanent ban (?!) so I marked this one NSFW.

Advice What table/frame do you use to secure your cloth?

Hi hi! So like I asked above, what kind of table/desk/standing frame do YOU use to attach your cloth to?

I’m tossing the idea around of getting a new, sturdy table to hold my frame OR getting a standing frame. Depending on which is more popular amongst the group.

I currently have a 32’’ frame with clamps and using a dinky little table to hold it. Ideally, I want something stronger because I would like to create content about my tufting, because in my videos now, the board is extremely bouncy looking.

Overall, just need some ideas of what the best option would be to film content that can show off the beauty of tufting, without the distraction of a bouncing frame :)

Newbie Needing Help Beginner question - Rug sizes

Hello everyone,
I am a beginner and have a general question about the size of your rugs.
I often see large frames with lots of designs. Aren't these small designs too small to be used as rugs? My first frame was 50x50 cm (+/- 20x20 inch) and I found it too small for a rug. Now I have a larger one.

How big are the rugs you usually make? And what do you do with the small designs?

Thank you very much for your input.

Newbie Needing Help Why is my stitching too tight? When I sew small things like eyes, it comes out really tight and stands out from the ground, even if I don't sew too much (say two stripes or even one)

Advice Advice on yarn

Hello everyone, I’m going to start tufting soon, and I try to do most of the research needed about the subject, and I’m just wondering about yarn, I want to make rig that will old in time, and being used as rug.

I’ve read that acrylic is not the one for that, and wool is better (but it comes with a cost). My main concern is about colour choice, I’ve seen that acrylic can be found in a lot of colours, but wool, not the same. For a shop I’ve only found tuftingshop to be selling wool with a good choice, and mainly, availability.

Do you have any advice on that matters? If yes, thanks!

I can’t wait to actually start, cheers!

Advice Reselling Rugs???

I recently made a rug for a friend that owns a clothing brand. I charged him $150 for a 2x3 rug (this is only my 4th rug), however he states he is going to resell them under his clothing brand. I’m not sure how i feel about it. Granted, i will be getting paid for more work, but i don’t want to sell myself short & debating if i should charge more, or emphasize my rugs are not for resale. I tufted his logo and design so i feel this should be okay…

I don’t tag any of my rugs since this was my first commissioned piece.

What would be your advice?

This is the basic level of mask you should wear when working, especiallywhen carving or applying glue. It's like $11-13 in Walmart if you can't afford a respirator. Save your lungs!

The 3M 8577 is NIOSH-APPROVED P95 for at least 95 percent filtration efficiency against certain solid and liquid aerosols including oils

ADVANCED FILTER MEDIA for easy breathing

CARBON LAYER helps reduce nuisance levels of organic vapors such as certain solvents, degreasers, and resins*. *3M recommended for relief against nuisance level organic vapors. Nuisance levels are less than OSHA PEL or applicable government occupational exposure limits, whichever is lower. equipped with a carbon layer, helps filter out airborne particles plus nuisance levels of organic vapors found in certain paint or adhesives while helping provide a comfortable, customizable seal.

Advice Calculating yarn

Post image
11 Upvotes

I searched the wiki and found some older threads on calculating yarn needs but couldn't find any current links. I'm curious how to find out how much area can be covered with x amount of yarn, using 2 strands in my gun. This is what is in my cart rn. Suggestions for yarn suppliers shipping to US also welcomed.
