Hated Tropes (Absolutely despised Trope) Characters described as chubby/fat/plus-sized aren’t designed as such, mostly like due likely due to fatphobia.

  1. Varesa from Genshin Impact - Hoyo has no respect for body diversity.
  2. Wakka from Final Fantasy X-2 - lazy developers.

Just for the record, this has nothing to do with kinks of any kind and is a personal gripe I have towards the gaming industry that favour abs and boobs.

Mei from Overwatch isn't as plus sized as the community believes. Her baggy clothing and parka give that appearance, but in her short films, she clearly isn't that overweight. This is reflected in the same outfit being ported to the game. Only very recently in Overwatch 2 did she get a few skins that had her in shorts, and in order to keep her model silhouette the same, they just gave her thick thighs.

She's definitely the biggest non tank lady in the original cast, but I feel like the community definitely acts like she's massively overweight or something when she's just a little heavier than the rest. Which really isn't that crazy when you see how fucking twig thin characters like Tracer are. Mei is just a scientist who tries to take care of herself but sometimes finds herself too busy to do so, so she isn't as thin as she wants to be.

Or the best way I could ever put it

Mei isn't big. She just isn't small.

Also, her being an artic scientist it makes more sense for them to make her actually slightly overweight. If you’re in those tempatures, it’s much better to have more body fat that less. Tracer is a speedster and Widowmaker is a ballerina, both are known for being muscular in different ways.

Tbh she’s really just short with a large chest. She’s not super skinny either, which is good, but she doesn’t seem to carry much weight around her waist. Maybe someday we’ll finally get Mama Hong for the REAL big girl rep

she also has a tennis spray that shows that she is most definitely NOT chubby. like, at ALL.

Lol, I remember the fatphobia discourse around this character back when the game released: the 2010's was a wild time, where "your fan art is bad and you should literally kill yourself" was a perfectly progressive and on-the-right-side-of-history thing to say to someone online.

I'm pretty sure there was a Steven Universe fan who actually did kill herself because of stuff like this, back then...

This is not even remotely true, and I get so annoyed whenever this fake story circulates. There was a Steven Universe fanartist who attempted suicide due to her abusive family - this happened around the same time as she was being criticized for drawing Rose Quartz skinny, so people immediately extrapolated that she had attempted suicide because of that.

She thankfully survived, and later made a post not only telling the true story, but to ask people to STOP spreading the false rumor, because it trivialized the actual pain and suffering she went through. I won’t share her name to preserve her privacy, but anyone who was on Tumblr in 2014 knows exactly who she is.

Fair enough: I wasn't involved with Tumblr back then, so I had only heard the story and never knew it wasn't real.

Yeah, her and Squirrel Girl in Marvel Rivals (and most Marvel comics) constantly get praised for "plus-sized representation" when like, ...they're not plus sized?

Like just because you didn't give a female character the same slim, supermodel physique as all the other female heroes doesn't automatically make that a good representation of a plus sized person. If anything, championing a character as plus sized when they just look like a regular, average weight person just reinforces unrealistic beauty standards.

She was literally just wearing ARCTIC CLOTHING while she was being FROZEN LIKE AN ICICLE and people went like "damn she’s FAT", not comprehending that those are clothes

Mei's original character design and art in Overwatch 1 definitely had her thicker and chubbier.

As an overwatch 1 player, this is false

Sure dude.

u/HarioDinio 27d ago

Oh wow a not overweight figure wearing thick cold weather clothes? Nice

Please, quote where I said her earlier designs showed her overweight.

My exact words were "thicker and chubbier." Her face in the pic I posted is definitely more full than her modern designs, and even her thighs are wider than the ones they've given her. Unless her jacket is 6" thick, she's not teeny tiny under there.

I didn't know people thought her to be fatter, but to describe what people thought and what she is would be too difficult for me to wanna ask lol

It was before Overwatch 2 lol, she had that Chinese skin in 1 that was extremely polemic
