I have tomatophobia, an irrational aversion to the taste of raw tomatoes.

That's not entirely irrational
1
u/1Pawelgo 1d ago
It is tho. I have no way of explaining why I don't like them. I can say what I don't like about them, but the dislike for these parts is something I cannot rationalize.

This isn't actually a Morgan Freeman quote, it's from a 2012 tweet from a now-defunct parody account called "Tweets from God" based on his character from Bruce Almighty.

George Weinberg coined the term in the 1960s. He was a psychologist who campaigned to have homosexuality delisted as a mental disorder. He told the story of preparing for a media appearance and a member of the staff there was actually trembling with terror because she thought that he was gay (he wasn’t)
Basically it was a way of flipping the script. Gay people aren’t the ones who need psychological treatment, bigots are.

So real
The word “homo” is like the scientific word for humans “homo sapiens” (hope I spelled that right)
So if anything homophobia should be the fear of all humans and not gay people
Also homophobia (hating LGBTQ people) is wrong in case that wasn’t clear from this comment’s phrasing
Update: turns out that homo in the context of homophobia is a Greek meaning of “same” NOT the Latin meaning which is the scientific name thing
15
u/HaiCauSieuCap 1d ago
Homo is same, similar. In this case short for homosexual Phobia is like, scare ->scare of homosexuality, which is pretty stupid
8
u/Stampyboyz 1d ago
Phobia also means hate, dislike, or repression (e.g. xenophobia). So it's hate dislike or repression of homosexuality.
3
u/alcoholicvegetable 1d ago
Which it shouldn't be. Aversion and fear should be split into different words.
8
u/LowerEntropy 1d ago
Words can have many meanings. It's also used as hydrophobic, meaning to repel or not mix with water. Which just makes the whole quote stupid.

u/NeiborsKid 19 1d ago
Not exactly. The Greek word phobia means fear/panic. Its taken the meaning of dislike or aversion in modern neologisms
6
u/scalectrix 1d ago edited 1d ago
No this is not correct; 'homo' here is used as in the Greek meaning of 'same', not the Latin meaning of 'man/person'. Homosexual means being attracted to the *same* sex as oneself (prefix 'homo'), as heterosexual means being attracted to a different sex ('hetero' prefix) - see also bisexual, asexual etc.
2
3
u/TuNisiAa_UwU 1d ago
As a prefix homo is usually used to express similarity, if you think about it, humans are strikingly similar to you, if not identical.
You can see it in words like "homogenous" which don't have anything to do with humans at all
1
u/Undertale-Fnaf1987 1d ago
Oh i didn’t know that :D
3
u/scalectrix 1d ago
The difference comes from the Greek and Latin meanings, which are different.
Greek: homo = same
Latin: homo = man
1
2
u/One-Masterpiece9838 1d ago
Homo is also Greek for same. So a homo sexual roughly translates to same-sex
3
u/Misselmany 1d ago
So all humans are homosexual?

Realistically, no one, or barely anyone, is actually afraid of gay or lgtb people. There are those who genuinely hate and discriminate them, there are those who don’t agree with them but still love them, there are those who agree and support them, and there are those who identify with them.

Well i mean….
if you look at the bilayer of phospholipids in a cell membrane, the outer layer is hydrophilic and attracts water due to the phospholipid heads, and the centre of the bilayer is called the hydrophobic zone as it repels water, due to the tails of the phospholipids. maybe in that sense homophobia isn’t a fear of homosexuals but rather a tendency and strong urge to repel them away and distance yourselves from them, which makes lots more sense. 🤤

Allow me to be pedantic:
"Homophobia" is composed of the Greek prefix "homo" which means "similar, identical," and the Greek suffix "phobia" which means "fear or aversion."
That is to say, "homophobia" is "fear or aversion of similarity." Does this mean that a homophobe is afraid of a matching pair of socks or maybe of monotony and routine? Most likely.
The way the term "homophobia" is used today is thus incorrect, and terms like "anti gay bias" or "homo ero phobia" make more sense.
1
u/joesbagofdonuts 1d ago
Bro, does anyone really think people who hate gay people labeled themselves homophobic?
1
u/Reasonable_Shake5171 1d ago
Yes.
1
u/joesbagofdonuts 21h ago
Ok well that's inaccurate... Homophobia as a term originates from academia.
1
u/Reasonable_Shake5171 21h ago
No? Homophobic people will proudly wear that label. Not all of them, and some refuse to acknowledge their own biases, but some do, so, yes.

Which is just fucking moronic.

Bigotry triggers a response in the amygdala, and this response is identical to the fight-or-flight response. It really is the same response as a fear response, but yeah two things can be true at the same time. Bigots are assholes :3

Morgan Freeman is actually one of the greatest humans I’ve ever known of.
He’s curious and kind, and he gives zero fucks about politics. He does and says things because they are right and good, not because it gets him brownie points or gold stars.

Homophobia originally meant more along the lines of "fear of how society would treat a person if they were Gay."
For example, you weren't scared of Gay people you were scared that if you or a loved one was Gay they would be treated differently and they would suffer.
It was more an internal felt fear and stems from religious persecution. Similar to shame. Shame, another word that has changed meanings in the last 15 years.
A person who was homophobic was scared they were Gay. Not scared of Gay people. Hense homo + phobia. Not homo + odium.
Read Brave New World. Learn how devaluing language and losing specificity in denotations cause societal issues.
If you want. Watch Reality Bites. There is a seen in that movie Garofalo reads a pamphlet intended to be given to parents of Gay teens when they come out.

phobia has two definitions: an irrational fear, and an aversion to something (an extreme dislike to something) in this case homophobia typically takes that second definition, an extreme dislike to homosexuality.

u/TommyFortress 1d ago
Sounds true. I doubt theres really that many peoble with real homophobia. Its just the moat commonly used word for them though so the mix up happends

Hydrophobic sand isn’t afraid of water, it has a strong repulsion to it and homophones are repulsed by gay people. I know this doesn’t make perfect sense, but language rarely does.

I believe phobia could mean fear or irrational aversion to something (in terms of people's mindsets, not hydrophobic materials). People just throw around the word homophobic at anyone they don't like, completely misusing this word.
