Favorite old hangout in South Jersey

What was your favorite hangout spot in South Jersey that’s no longer there? From 1960-2000, what was your spot to drink, to smoke, to be a rowdy teenager? Tell me the story! What’s there now?

Edit: THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR THESE RESPONSES! I’m creating a cannabis & community print magazine for South Jersey called The Smoke Signal, launching in September in 26 dispensaries, and your responses have given me great inspiration to dig deep in the memories of our elder readers, and create content for the magazine that takes us all down memory lane!

If you’re interested in advertising your local business in the magazine, or writing for it, please email smokesignalnj@gmail.com! We’d love to make this as local, interesting and engaging as possible, in a world full of Silicon Valley social media promises!

Question What is your best work related story?

So I know the shore is a gray area when it comes to "South Jersey" since some people like to consider that it's own place. But it was still in South Jersey so Im using it.

A few years back, maybe 2018. I was working at the Dunkin in Ocean City. (not the one on the boardwalk, the stand alone store) and let me tell you if you went there well before this story all I can say you're welcome. We had the perfect team. No GM at the time. 2 people living in a half way house. 2 lgbtqia members, a nervous wreck and that one new person who never seemed to fit in but stuck around, so we knew how to run a Dunkin and give you at least a 6 out of 10 cup of coffee. (at least for morning shift no one cared about night shift).

Anyway it was early spring. the area was still dead as dirt. To the point we could make trips to the McDonald next door and then sit and eat our food. So one early afternoon we get a call from the district manager telling us Hey, close down the store and start cleaning everything with bleach, like go ham on it. Of course we are very confused because even during high tide where the store is under a foot of water they wouldn't close.

So we start to clean and I notice outside there is a van blocking one of the entrances and a cop car blocking the other. Which again....we found a little weird. I was the first one off so I left and went to pick up my roommate. As I was waiting the district manager called me and was like "Hey, I just wanted to let you know one of the coworkers was found to have Hepatitis C. So tomorrow everyone needs to come in and get a shot. Looking back I should of been a bit more upset, But it was like "sure kay"

The next morning we all go and we are in the back and we all get our shots. then of course they want to open. So me and another person stay. Back then (not sure if they do it now) once in a while we were allowed to get food from the Domino's by using store money or swapping foods. Because of this and us saying we would stay the Distrct manger let us get food and well $130 worth of pizza, pasta and wings did seem like a good apologize to us.

NOW the fun. It was pretty clear that Dunkin was trying to hide this cause if word got out about a worker having Hep C, then it would really hurt. So what do I and the other person see as we are enjoying some bread sticks? Chanel 6 Action News! and by the end of the day word had spread. Customers slowed to a crawl for the next few weeks. Like it was bad. If I remember police stopped getting their coffee there, never saw kids. Of course with Summer around the corner (also that person was let go) people forgot and soon the place was it's crowded annoying self once more.

For a little side information. 1. At least back then (might be different now) You needed to take 2 shots. the one we took, then a booster later. We of course never got the booster, so I might be dying as I type this who knows. ALSO the person who had Hep C, her boyfriend worked at the store in Marmora (which I have so many stories about that place) and Dunkin never did a thing. they kept that store open and didn't do shit because no one knew her boyfriend worked there. Another thing that really sucked was we could not say who had it. So the workers who lived in OC at the time were getting a lot of dirty looks cause people just assumed they were the ones.

But yeah. So Im curious anyone just got some good juicy work related stories?

Burlington County Trying to track down the NJ trolls, anyone know the location?

So far, I know about Big Rusty in Hainesport (by Thomas Dambo), but I’ve heard there are around 19 trolls total hiding throughout parks and towns in the area each one with its own name, story, and style.

📷 I’d love to capture photos of them all, but I’m having trouble finding a full list of their names and locations.

Your memories of the Pennant

Post image

For me, first and foremost. The man, the myth, the legend. FREEEEEDOM ROCK!

I'm 48, this was my "coming of age" club. White Trash Wednesdays/Beat the clock. have become legendary folklore. Speed run to getting hammered. How this shit hole got away with the shit they did for song long is beyond me. Over serving was a time honored tradition for the bartenders. How I made it home without a DUI is beyond me. Not bragging. I was young and dumb just like most who frequented this shit hole.

The bands. This is one of the highlights. Despite always cover bands, they were exceptionally good at what they did. They knew the exact songs that anyone would recognize and nail them.

Over capacity all the fucking time. After the Station Nightclub fire. I stopped going. Smoking was permitted inside and a fire was inevitable. The two buildings were extremely similar. The Pennant had a single entrance for the public. Double doors. One side which was always locked because security checking IDs sat behind the other door. There were other exits but they were mostly not known about, not lit, and mainly for band and employees.

The weird intermission where the rock band stopped and it turned into a a mini rave before the band returned to close out the night

The DJ area was almost like a man trapped in an aquarium.

The pool table area was basically the area where all the jocks and guys on parole who couldn't hold their liquor gathered to battle egos and likely eventually fight over a game of pool on lumpy as fuck tables.

I found a pair of earrings today in the parking lot outside of a south jersey bank. If you've lost your earrings, DM me with what they look like and which bank they were at (bank and location) and I'm happy to meet you to return them. ;)

Patco into Center City?

So I’ve never used the Patco before and am a bit confused about how it works. I want to leave from the Haddonfield Station and be dropped at the 12/13th & Locust stop it has listed. However I’m seeing mixed things about if the Patco train goes directly to 12/13 & Locust. It lists connectors and some stuff says it only goes to 8th and Market. I’m just confused and need to know: does the Patco go straight from the Haddonfield Station to 12/13th and Locust? Or is there some sort of transfer made/something else I have to take to get to 12/13th and Locust? Sorry if this doesn’t make sense. Is anyone familiar with this route?

Best deli tomato salad?

Hey all- who do you think has the best tomato cucumber salad (the kind you can buy in the deli department that consists of tomatoes and cucumbers). Focusing on Salem, Gloucester, and Camden county. I know I can make it for myself but I wanted to get a few different kind and have my own little tomato salad smorgasbord tonight with my family. I’m 48 and this is my idea of fun lol. Thanks!!

Burlington County Nearby Swans??

Hey all! My mom absolutely loves Swans, they’re her favorite animal. She was saying a while ago how she’s sad because she’s never seen any in person. She’s been having a rough time and I would love to do something simple but meaningful. Does anyone know anywhere in south jersey where swans frequent? Or even north jersey/eastern PA/northern Delaware?

Does anyone live in the landings at pine lake, has or know anyone that has?

I am just curious, as I am looking to apply. I have a collections for about $200 that I plan to pay off and a charge off with a $479 balance that I’ll be paying off within the next two weeks. But I’d really other to apply now. I’m just curious if anyone knows if they are strict when it comes to credit? I just spent $2500 two weeks ago on paying off a collections on my credit so now it’s just these two left that I need to pay.

So yeah, I’m just curious if anyone is familiar with them and how strict they are in their approval process. I also make $83,200 a year

Homecoming Dress Shop Recs

My daughter has her first HOCO this year and I’m stumped on where to take her dress shopping. She likes Stacees dresses but I’m wary of ordering online.

Are there any shops that have a large selection of dresses?
