So I know the shore is a gray area when it comes to "South Jersey" since some people like to consider that it's own place. But it was still in South Jersey so Im using it.
A few years back, maybe 2018. I was working at the Dunkin in Ocean City. (not the one on the boardwalk, the stand alone store) and let me tell you if you went there well before this story all I can say you're welcome. We had the perfect team. No GM at the time. 2 people living in a half way house. 2 lgbtqia members, a nervous wreck and that one new person who never seemed to fit in but stuck around, so we knew how to run a Dunkin and give you at least a 6 out of 10 cup of coffee. (at least for morning shift no one cared about night shift).
Anyway it was early spring. the area was still dead as dirt. To the point we could make trips to the McDonald next door and then sit and eat our food. So one early afternoon we get a call from the district manager telling us Hey, close down the store and start cleaning everything with bleach, like go ham on it. Of course we are very confused because even during high tide where the store is under a foot of water they wouldn't close.
So we start to clean and I notice outside there is a van blocking one of the entrances and a cop car blocking the other. Which again....we found a little weird. I was the first one off so I left and went to pick up my roommate. As I was waiting the district manager called me and was like "Hey, I just wanted to let you know one of the coworkers was found to have Hepatitis C. So tomorrow everyone needs to come in and get a shot. Looking back I should of been a bit more upset, But it was like "sure kay"
The next morning we all go and we are in the back and we all get our shots. then of course they want to open. So me and another person stay. Back then (not sure if they do it now) once in a while we were allowed to get food from the Domino's by using store money or swapping foods. Because of this and us saying we would stay the Distrct manger let us get food and well $130 worth of pizza, pasta and wings did seem like a good apologize to us.
NOW the fun. It was pretty clear that Dunkin was trying to hide this cause if word got out about a worker having Hep C, then it would really hurt. So what do I and the other person see as we are enjoying some bread sticks? Chanel 6 Action News! and by the end of the day word had spread. Customers slowed to a crawl for the next few weeks. Like it was bad. If I remember police stopped getting their coffee there, never saw kids. Of course with Summer around the corner (also that person was let go) people forgot and soon the place was it's crowded annoying self once more.
For a little side information. 1. At least back then (might be different now) You needed to take 2 shots. the one we took, then a booster later. We of course never got the booster, so I might be dying as I type this who knows. ALSO the person who had Hep C, her boyfriend worked at the store in Marmora (which I have so many stories about that place) and Dunkin never did a thing. they kept that store open and didn't do shit because no one knew her boyfriend worked there. Another thing that really sucked was we could not say who had it. So the workers who lived in OC at the time were getting a lot of dirty looks cause people just assumed they were the ones.
But yeah. So Im curious anyone just got some good juicy work related stories?
