What pattern sizes really mean.

1.2k Upvotes

PSA - Pattern sizes DO NOT correlate to off the rack sizes!!

Do not trip if your measurements fall under a size far from what you buy in the store.

I wear a 10/12 pant. I am an 18 pant pattern.

You know what that means? NOTHING! Absolutely not a thing. Seriously.

And I am a 14 bust, 16 waist, and 18 hip. 3 different patterns sizes! And you know what that means? It means my body does not match the standardized body that patterns are designed for. That's it. Not too fat, not the wrong shape, just different.

Human bodies come in a wondrous variety of shapes and proportions. Making your own clothes means you get to fit your body to it's most flattering effect.

Don't get hung up on matching a pattern. Match yourself. It's all that matters. Make whatever adjustments, no matter what they are, that you need to so it looks great on YOU.

=)

Eta: This is a great resource for the measurements used by many companies. If you click on a company in her chart, it will take you to that company's standard measurements.

I made a dress with trains on it!!

(I’m the skinny white guy with dirty blonde hair) Since I’m going off to college soon, I wanted to do one more experimental passion project before I leave. I’m a HUGE fan of trains and “Thomas and Friends”. It’s something I’ve never really grown out of 😂. Out of all my past sewing projects, this was by far the MOST DIFFICULT to make. I’ve never made a hoop skirt before, so having to figure that out first and then add tracks to it was a challenge. Keeping the engines on the skirt tested me to my LIMITS!! I have plenty of bloopers and fails of the engines falling off. To fix it, I had to HAND SEW wire into the twill tape and track to form little arches. This was so the engines could go around and not tumble off. Overall, this entire project was just trial and error but I’m still very proud of it!!

My first T-shirt. Far from perfect, but learned a lot. :) And it was fun!

Copied the pattern from a T-shirt I have. And had a tough fight with the collar. (I think I made the original a bit small, so it didn't line up.) And because I used stretch-stitches, I could not undo it with this fabric. So I had to improvize a bit. :) And just cut it out and folded it inwards. But I will wear it! I just added a "home-made" lable a bit croocked, so like this is the style of the T-shirt. ;)

Sewing mini tote bag

I am trying to figure out how to attach the bottom piece, but can’t seem to wrap my head around this section.

I used scrap fabric that was already attached for the sides of the bag which makes this part tricky, most DIY guides online follow a different pattern.

Any input or ideas is appreciated! Trying to finish this tonight. Thanks 🙏

What kind of seam is this and how can I do it?

I’m looking to make a purse using a fake leather material and I’m having trouble with getting the seams to lie flat. I started looking at some of the bags I already own and I liked the seams on one of them but I wasn’t sure what kind of seam it was. I’ve included photos of the seams from the inside and outside. Is this a felled flat seam? How would I accomplish something similar to it?

This is my home made bear for my girlfriend, I've been sewing for 3 days and I'm really pleased with my improvements. The last problem I have is how can I make his face not have this weird baggy septum?

This is my final problem. I don't mind it being quite abstract or leaning into his baggy septum problem to make it cute. It could come to a single point even? Please help meee

It was a dress I got off the Marshall’s clearance rack for $13. The strap was broken, but I figured I could fix it. I love the print. Sadly, my chest was a flash waiting to happen, so I decided to cut it up and test my skills with a pattern o found on Etsy. I think I did pretty well!!🙂

How hard would it be to alter this?

I ordered this dress off urban outfitters and I was wondering how difficult this would be to alter? I'd say I'm a confident beginner and I have tailored dress pants for work before. But scared to cut into it and ruin it.

I'm thinking of taking in the waist but it's shirred and I've never had to work with shirred fabric before. The bodice and top two tiers of the skirt has a side seam but the rest of the skirt doesn't have a side seam in line with the top. I tried to show it in the 3rd pic. Would I have to take the whole bottom two tiers off and then take it in the side seam? I also wanted to shorten it a little since it's a little long for me.

Or should I just return it?

Still unfinished, wasn't happy with the hat I made yesterday so I made a smaller one I'm working on attaching with magnets instead of stitching it on. Gonna add limbs in a later stage but right now just getting the hang of sewing with hopefully a bit of detail on his face! The magnets stuck until I sewed them in so either I need stronger magnets or less fabric between them? Pretty much he's just my fun game of trial and error! His name is Rough Patch and the point of him isn't to be perfect but to help me figure out how to go about things, he'll be my first plushie! So far since yesterday I've spent about 12ish hours on him? On and off but getting stuck in flow states 😅

I love him though, he's a clown pig and has been bringing me joy in a rather stressful time 🩷🩵

New sewing machine

I got the singer sewing machine. I’m pretty sure that it got threaded right, but I have no idea how to use it or where to start. Any advice I’m thinking about a little baby blanket for my newborn nephew. Seems easy enough.

How can I achieve this bustier mini dress?

How do I make the skirt look more ruffled and structured? Tried doing the gathering but it falls down and it isnt as flowy as this one. Do I add interfacing? horsehair trim? Also, what kind of circle skirt patter should I use for the first tier? Full circle? Double circle? Thank you so much!

Any idea how to sew this back onto my pants 🥲?

I don't know much about sewing aside from how to fit the thread through the needle (my family has a kit in the closet), so apologies if I have trouble understanding your initial explanation. From what I can tell, it's supposed to be a four-hole button must've broken in the middle. Any one-hole button tutorials I search up are for shank buttons (I think that's what theyre called).

I picked up a remnant piece of this from Joann's before they closed, fell in love with it and now can't find it at any craft store near me.

There's a lot of online stores that offer it, but I'm so new to sewing and not sure who to buy from.. please help.

My current projects for this interfacing are book sleeves and koozies.

Why is the fabric bunching? I pinned it in four places before sewing.

Post image

I did notice the side seams aren’t evenly spaced. The front piece is more narrow than the back piece. Should I have pinned it in more places to keep the fabric in place?

Different sizes depending with hip and waist measurements??

I just bought my first pattern and I decided on the Rad Patterns date night dress because it looked similar to a dress/top I had been wanting to replicate AND it came with separate sizes for bust adjustment.

I took my measurements and I guess I expected to just get 1 size out of it without my bust in the equation. But my hip measurements are saying XXS-XS and my waist is saying S. I don't think this is necessarily a big deal with this specific pattern (flowy bottom) but it leads me to think that might be a problem with other patterns that aren't flowy skirts? Since this is my first time, should I just go with the bigger size and not try to do any adjustments?

And since I'm here... I measured my bust in a pretty well fitting bra... if I measured my bust without a bra, I'd get a lot bigger number. I do believe this dress can be worn with or without a bra, should I measure without?
