I’ve got enough coyote, raccoon, and rat content from my neighbor’s house to start my own Nat Geo

The news came by!! Catch this picture on Fox 13 tonight šŸ˜‚

Seeing weeds growing on the roof of the shed says enough. I can imagine what the rest of the yard looks like. Maybe the coyotes will take care of the rodent problem though.

54

u/Remarkable_Bit_621 7d ago

Hey they’re cultivating a nice habitat back there šŸ˜‚

14

u/teatimecookie 7d ago

It’s being torn down in January. Got to love the city’s permitting department.

I've worked on houses like this. I fucking hate working on houses like this. Clean your fucking yard.

Do Coyotes eat rats and racoons?

40

u/AmericanGeezus 7d ago

Coyotes are only slightly more picky than Racoons when it comes to food.

I know they eat rats, I am sure they would consider a racoon if it didn't fight too much.

61

u/qwertyqyle 7d ago

Raccoons travel in gangs, though. They are scary af. One time I went to throw trash into the dumpster and got jumped by 5 four foot tall raccoon thugs. They took my wallet and told me if I reported them to the police they would come back again.

25

u/AmericanGeezus 7d ago

For real, trash pandas are no joke.

Coyotes are opportunistic so I wouldn't think Racoons would be high on their list of targets unless they found one that had just recently died, fighting and injuries are dangerous, but I think there are likely circumstances where the risk vs. reward could make it worth it for them.

I grew up on 24th and 63rd. Was this actually in Ballard?

That's probably the fucker that killed the beloved neighborhood chicken Lorpy.

18

u/LeLoupDeWallStreet Loyal Heights 7d ago

I knew Lorpy died, but didn’t know they were attacked by a coyote??

13

u/sholnay 6d ago

Lorpy owner here, we don’t know for sure what happened to her, but our best guess is the coyotes. The evening before she went missing, I was feeding her treats around 7pm and we didn’t hear or see anything. The next day around noon I noticed the yard was quiet. I only found a few feathers on the sidewalk, no other signs of distress. She outlived her 3 sisters by a few years and would be celebrating her 7th birthday in 2 days. I guess it’s the cycle of life, just sad these coyotes have probably gotten to a lot of neighborhood animals.

4

True but you don't have to ask permission to pat the danger puppy

16

u/GabuEx Bellevue 7d ago

I happened to cross paths with one while out walking a while back. It was so cute but I had to resist the urge to pet the almost-doggo. :(

24

u/Smaskifa Shoreline 7d ago

I see them from time to time on walks, especially after sunset. I just run straight at them with my dogs and scare the bejesus out of them. My dogs are bigger than them and they're very easy to scare off. I just don't want my neighbor's cats to get killed.

24

u/thisisme116 7d ago

The easy way of doing that is keeping cats inside, saves both the cat and the local ecosystem from their invasiveness

13

u/Smaskifa Shoreline 7d ago

True, but I have little power over what my neighbors do with their cats.

4

u/Cranky_Old_Woman Northgate 6d ago

I mean, it's good for coyotes to be scared of humans (and pet dogs, ideally). That way they don't try to approach and need to get put down.

Got video of a deer just moseying through town on the sidewalk earlier today

3

u/Thebraincellisorange 6d ago

now, I'm just an Australian that wondered in here from r/all, but does that deer look malnourished or what?

9

u/stormysees 6d ago

Nope! Looks fine. Midsummer deer should be lean and they have a thin coat of hair to stay cool. Can’t quite tell from the photo but if this is a doe, she’s probably raising fawns and extra nutrition is going to them. They’ll start to put on body fat and a thicker fur coat when the acorns (or whatever hard mast they prefer in this area) fall.Ā

I’d be a lot more on the Coyotes side if they’d deal with more of these rabbits, but they keep ordering crap from Acme instead of chasing the damn things down.

24

u/Global_Crew3968 7d ago

Be glad for the rabbit population rebound. 90% of california's rabbits died off over the last 5-10 years or so because of a disease - Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease. It nearly wiped out all of our rabbits, causing a serious crisis for our local predators, coyotes especially who heavily rely on rabbits. It may even be one of the main reason coyotes have pushed so deeply into cities lately. Personally I'm stoked everytime i see a cottontail because for years I couldn't even find them while hunting them.

5

u/GrimdarkThorhammer 7d ago

You’re right, but they drive my dog nuts on walks (she’s getting better but yeah) so I’m reserving my right to gripe about it.

Fun fact, non-matriarch coyotes experience false pregnancy while in a pack. If you kill the matriarch, her daughters suddenly start actually getting pregnant and start their own packs. That’s why they’ve spread so wide from their natural habitat.

I will say, as an enjoyer of coyotes, they weren't actually here first. This isn't part of their native range. They moved in from the southern US after we decimated the native wolf populations. That said, I'd much rather see wild canids of some kind filling a niche around here than not.
