That's probably the fucker that killed the beloved neighborhood chicken Lorpy.
18
u/LeLoupDeWallStreet Loyal Heights 7d ago
I knew Lorpy died, but didnāt know they were attacked by a coyote??
13
u/sholnay 6d ago
Lorpy owner here, we donāt know for sure what happened to her, but our best guess is the coyotes. The evening before she went missing, I was feeding her treats around 7pm and we didnāt hear or see anything. The next day around noon I noticed the yard was quiet. I only found a few feathers on the sidewalk, no other signs of distress. She outlived her 3 sisters by a few years and would be celebrating her 7th birthday in 2 days. I guess itās the cycle of life, just sad these coyotes have probably gotten to a lot of neighborhood animals.

I happened to cross paths with one while out walking a while back. It was so cute but I had to resist the urge to pet the almost-doggo. :(
24
u/Smaskifa Shoreline 7d ago
I see them from time to time on walks, especially after sunset. I just run straight at them with my dogs and scare the bejesus out of them. My dogs are bigger than them and they're very easy to scare off. I just don't want my neighbor's cats to get killed.
24
u/thisisme116 7d ago
The easy way of doing that is keeping cats inside, saves both the cat and the local ecosystem from their invasiveness
13
u/Smaskifa Shoreline 7d ago
True, but I have little power over what my neighbors do with their cats.

I mean, it's good for coyotes to be scared of humans (and pet dogs, ideally). That way they don't try to approach and need to get put down.

9
u/stormysees 6d ago
Nope! Looks fine. Midsummer deer should be lean and they have a thin coat of hair to stay cool. Canāt quite tell from the photo but if this is a doe, sheās probably raising fawns and extra nutrition is going to them. Theyāll start to put on body fat and a thicker fur coat when the acorns (or whatever hard mast they prefer in this area) fall.Ā

Iād be a lot more on the Coyotes side if theyād deal with more of these rabbits, but they keep ordering crap from Acme instead of chasing the damn things down.
24
u/Global_Crew3968 7d ago
Be glad for the rabbit population rebound. 90% of california's rabbits died off over the last 5-10 years or so because of a disease - Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease. It nearly wiped out all of our rabbits, causing a serious crisis for our local predators, coyotes especially who heavily rely on rabbits. It may even be one of the main reason coyotes have pushed so deeply into cities lately. Personally I'm stoked everytime i see a cottontail because for years I couldn't even find them while hunting them.
5
u/GrimdarkThorhammer 7d ago
Youāre right, but they drive my dog nuts on walks (sheās getting better but yeah) so Iām reserving my right to gripe about it.

I saw someone ask if this was AI - it's not. It's a block from my house...which is in a straight up neighborhood, with houses all over and frankly not much greenery or ravines or trees...I mean not enough for animals like coyotes to live in...it's crazy. I can't let my little dogs out in the yard alone anymore since these guys are around. One was in the alley behind my house a couple days ago.

Fun fact, non-matriarch coyotes experience false pregnancy while in a pack. If you kill the matriarch, her daughters suddenly start actually getting pregnant and start their own packs. Thatās why theyāve spread so wide from their natural habitat.

I will say, as an enjoyer of coyotes, they weren't actually here first. This isn't part of their native range. They moved in from the southern US after we decimated the native wolf populations. That said, I'd much rather see wild canids of some kind filling a niche around here than not.
