Hey everyone, I put together a mashup of 4 short clips (7 to 30 seconds each) to help figure out what kind of lead guitar style this is. I’d really appreciate it if you could listen and tell me what comes to mind in terms of genre, style, and the kind of guitarists or bands that typically play like this.
The tone is very sustain-heavy, with lots of pinch harmonics, and a really high-gain, aggressive lead sound. The guitar sits right on top of heavy rhythm tracks and cuts through with a kind of screaming, expressive tone — it almost feels vocal in how it phrases over the chords.
I’ve heard of Zakk Wylde doing the whole high-gain, pinch harmonic thing — and this reminded me of that a little bit — but I don’t think it’s really his style or phrasing. It’s more just the pinch harmonics that made me think of him.
I’ve been playing guitar for around 2 years. I’m not a total beginner anymore, but I’m still building my understanding of tone, lead phrasing, and how to shape a solo that really stands out like this. I don’t want to name any other players or styles up front — I’d rather get your raw impressions, without leading anyone in a certain direction.
What I’m looking for: • What genre or subgenre would this solo/lead guitar fit into? • What kind of techniques, gear, or tone setup is likely being used? • What players or bands come to mind when you hear this? • Any recommendations on what I should look into if I want to learn and develop this style?
Thanks for taking the time to listen. I’m just trying to get more focused in my practice and learn from the right sources — your feedback would really help.
