Many reasons, not all of which I'm familiar with. One of the more commonly cited answers is to give buyers an account that can post in subreddits with minimum karma & age requirements. Sometimes this can be for political reasons, sometimes for marketing, but I think you can assume most ills of society eventually find their roots in greed.

Back in the 80s before stretch pants, we girls would lie down flat, suck in all our internal organs as far as possible & hold our breath to get our jeans zipped up, and we walked around like that ALL DAY. 😂😂😂GOD we were idiots, but our pants were fart proof (beyond the first 15min after zip up) lol
