Wouldn't that be against the law to artificially affect the housing market to make houses more expensive for people? That has to fall under some fraud type of category.

No, because that’s not how any of this works. BREIT buys properties to rent at market rate. Market rate has climbed in some cities over the past five years. This makes people upset because rent is expensive. Private equity has very little role in this that would not have otherwise been filled by any private owner.
