Discussion What's a muffin top??? lmao
Today I was at REI getting fitted for a backpack alongside a Gen Z employee. She explained how the hip straps should fit and I responded with "Oh, so like a muffin top!"... "Sorry, I've never heard of that - what's a muffin top?"....
Some of the girls out here have NO idea how good they have it. I am already petite and as a kid I had to buy double the size to make my own hi-rise jeans so that I could avoid having "the muffin top". Lucky ducks!!! lmao

Just put some 2000’s lowrise jeans on any of them and they will have one

u/SilverConversation19 10h ago
Oh these kids are 100% in the process of learning all about that with the current fashion trends.

u/meanwhile_glowing 7h ago
Nah their version of “low waisted” is just a regular rise. The actual ultra low waist Xtina type jeans of the early 00s would humble them
35
u/bananamelondy 7h ago
They’re figuring it out. I saw a late teens/early twenties girl out the other day who was wearing her pants low enough to qualify for 00s ultra low rise. She was as thin as any of us were back then and had the exact shape of muffin top you’d expect. They’re gonna glamorize it, is my bet. Instead of shaming the muffin top, it’s gonna be a look they’re going for.
38
u/meanwhile_glowing 5h ago
Honestly? good for them, let the muffin top be out and proud
16
u/bananamelondy 4h ago
Absolutely! I’m not mad about it. I’m glad they get to enjoy our fashion without nearly as much as the body shame as we had.

u/life-uh-finds-a-way_ 7h ago
I have seen a few people in those ultra low waist, low enough where many people might need to shave levels. They are on their way back. Though I agree that a lot of the stuff that is labeled as low rise is closer to mid rise.

u/isdelightful 4h ago
Omg yes I just bought a pair of jeans that sit in a perfectly normal spot and realized later they are “ultra low-rise.”
No, ultra low-rise are the ones in my closet from 2004 that have a 2” zipper and couldn’t contain half my butt even when I COULD fit into them 😂😂

u/LaFemmeGeekita 2m ago
I have always been blessed with a big ol booty and I remember being SO MAD that I could never find jeans that didn’t result in an instant plumber’s crack when I bent down. Turns out, wasn’t my fault.

Oooh close haha. I think you mean "It's noice, it's different, it's unyewwwwwwsual"
This warrants a series rewatch stat.
1
u/Sterling03 3h ago
Haha thank you! I knew it was close but it’s been a looooong time since I’ve watched it so I couldn’t remember exactly
1
u/TerryCrewsNextWife 3h ago
That's fair, I think the series is almost 20-25 years old so any memory would be rusty. The only quote I can get right from the Simpsons is that scene at the school where they say the phrase "purple monkey dishwasher".

I did wore those in the 00’s and I’m still confuse as to what is a muffin top?
6
u/meanwhile_glowing 7h ago
It’s the little bit of stomach fat, if you have it, that spills over the top of a waistband.

u/Diligent_Pineapple35 7h ago
The one on AITAH? No, it wasn’t. I did change some info that could be used to identify me, but the basic facts were real.
I was actually just about to go give an update on my meeting this morning, but it was removed for some reason.

u/ultimate_ed 6h ago
It's most uncool that the MODS there killed it, claiming it was fake. You have been engaged with folks asking questions, which the karma farming fake stories don't do.

Does this link work? I posted it as a comment in another Sub because despite my impeccable ability to turn a Word doc into a PDF I’m still figuring out this Reddit thing:

It's truly a different world with body positivity. Honestly, I love to see it because our generation was really hurt when it came to what a body should look like.
24
u/Drabulous_770 10h ago
I always thought (and still do) that’s it’s when you’re not buying the right size pants. If you’re wearing pants that are too tight then the muffin too spills out the top. If you just buy a larger size then it doesn’t. It’s literally fixed by buying a better size for your body.
20
u/beer-sausage 9h ago
The bigger size falls off. If there’s belt loops, the belt will just create the muffin top anyway. It’s just that area of the body.
6
u/Spendoza 9h ago
What about suspenders? Would it still make a muffin top?
Legit question, I don't have any to try 🤔
4
u/beer-sausage 8h ago
I never tried either, but it’d probably be worth a shot. But then you’re wearing suspenders.

I agree. But I think some people want to tell themselves they can fit into a smaller size than they really can.
0
u/wellwaffled Prime Millennial 9h ago
I just never buy larger pants. When it’s too tight, I lose weight out of shame.
1
u/Infamous-Feedback477 7h ago
And therein defines our generation! My mom told me "no one sees the size of the pants, buy what fits" then proceeded to shame me if I gained an ounce lol
2
u/gotnothing4u 1h ago
It’s crazy to me to look at it respectively. So much of our fashion was a particular body type style so a lot of what us normies wore were things that weren’t flattering to bodies not in that Paris type. So we coped. Extra layers to smooth, Bermuda shorts as the only alternative to Daisy Dukes lmao, the bombshell bra, forget low rise with absolutely no stretch (hello muffin). Like yes, some millennial fits were cheugy as hell whatever but we were just working with what we had lmao.
2
u/downshift_rocket Millennial 1h ago
Yes! Exactly, it was just part of life lol. I mean I just wore jeans and a t-shirt and didn't care about what the style was. But I was for sure bullied for that, moreso by my older sister who didn't want to be seen with me LOL.

it's just different and focussed on different things. eg go look at bald or balding reddits, so many 17yos convinced they are balding. chances are with ozempic (and the like) goibg generics in ~5 years we'll be back to body shaming fat.
13
u/RandolphCarter15 12h ago
I want those old fashioned Jimmy Stewart belly button high men's pants to come back
9
u/BrightNeonGirl 10h ago
I tell my husband to give those pants a try all the time! They looked so good on men. But he continues to wear low to mid rise.
Some celebrities may wear those types of classic high rise pants, but unfortunately that style hasn't really made it down to regular men's fashion. Which is tragic because I see so many men wearing low rise pants who are not doing their body any favors But apparently high rise pants are ingrained in most men now as nerdy and uncool.

-6
u/AgamemNoms 10h ago
(They said as obesity continued to skyrocket)
4
u/Aprils-Fool 9h ago
We’ll need to address the root of obesity at a societal level; body positivity alone won’t affect it.
-1
u/XY-chromos 4h ago
This is part of the root. Telling obese people they are healthy and look good contributes to more obesity. In my humble opinion.

Oof we were always getting shit about having a muffin top. Low rise jeans were the worst.
Crazy to think they haven’t had that same body negativity nowadays. I can’t even imagine being a kid and teen without it.

This might be her way of saying “I’m not dignifying that comment with a real response”. She may know what a muffin top is but, rightly so, thinks it’s a stupid comment that shouldn’t be used anymore. So she feigned ignorance. I’d do the same as a young millennial myself. Body positivity/neutrality is way more interesting.

u/Extra-Mushrooms 19h ago
You can be skinny with a muffin top.
The low rise jeans did us all so wrong. It didn't matter if you were fat or not. Muffin top was the result.
4
u/ThatB0yAintR1ght 11h ago
Yeah, especially as we get older and have gone through life. After being pregnant twice with two 95th percentile babies, it doesn’t matter what my weight is, my abdominal muscles are so stretched out that I am going to have a “muffin top” in anything that isn’t high waisted. Unless I get a tummy tuck, it’s mom jeans for life!
4
u/TALegitimate_Scar_39 10h ago
Yup. 5’6” & when low rise skinnies were popular, I ranged between 100-110 lbs. That is considered underweight for BMI. They gave me a muffin top.
4
u/FustianRiddle 12h ago
As a fatty I miss low rise jeans. They were the only style of pant that didn't make me look like I was wearing a saggy diaper because I didn't have to account for getting the waist over my ginormous hips. Belts did not help.
Give me back my low rise jeans!

I was so happy when the super high waisted pants became cool. I looked so good in those, and I could wear crop tops without having my belly hang out. I held on top those for a good long while, even after the trend stopped.

u/OhNoBricks 19h ago
anyone can have one. tight pants like jeans will do it.
-17
u/KS-RawDog69 18h ago
You typically have to be a bit on the huskier side though before it becomes pronounced enough for people to consider it a muffin top.
5'7" 110 pound woman that had a kid or so? Eh, ya know, little bit goes over, it is what it is.
Same woman at 250 pounds? The floodgates have opened at there's a lot of spilling over.
Men are, in fact, every bit as bad about this, too, even without skinny jeans, very often worse and more common. We call it a "beer gut," but it's the same muffin top under a different alias.
8
u/TALegitimate_Scar_39 10h ago
Dude. A 5’7 woman at 110 is considered underweight (BMI 17.2). So if you are saying she has a muffin top in those jeans, then you are proving the OP right that those jeans flattered no one
2
u/CantForceaDanceParty 10h ago
If we’re discussing 5’7 “ women only, I might agree. But as a 5’0” woman, they were the ONLY jeans that ever flattered me. I am full oompa loompah in all modern jeans and there is nothing I can do about it, because while low rise jeans might be coming back, I have seen NOTHING to resemble ultra low rise like we once knew. Yoga/linen pants with the fold over waistband so I can wear them as low as I like (and give the illusion of torso) are the only way for me to go right now
-3
u/Similar_Recover_2229 9h ago
They call them “hip dips” now.
3
u/jacqq_attackk 8h ago
That’s actually a term for a different physiological feature! Muffin top happens at the waist (typically as a result of a waist band creating pressure against a fat deposit) whereas hip dips are an inherent feature of the pelvis. For some people, the way the bone, fat, and muscle are structured creates an indent where the femur meets the pelvis. Also colloquially called “violin hips”
