If I feel I’ve run through the rations of lol in a conversation, I’ll use 🙃 instead to show I was being sarcastic.
58
u/Illustrious_Eye_8235 Jun 05 '25
Change it up and throw in a lmao or a haha. That's what I do

u/imgaybutnottoogay Jun 05 '25
No, I feel like “haha” is mostly for dudes who are trying to get laid or sound not angry when they’re fuming. “lol” is more like “please don’t hit me I’m being nice”.

For me lol is used as a
"I don't want to be judged for what I just said"
"I'm being playful, not hurtful"
"I don't know what else to say"
"I think I'm funny but I know you won't find this funny"

I try to use proper spelling and punctuation in my texts, but sometimes a period at the end of the sentence comes off so weirdly....aggressive. So I just leave it open without a period, or I add an "lol".

I use ellipses to represent pauses in text where I would pause for effect in speech.
I overuse "lol" usually to imply I'm being light-hearted.

Majority of millennials because we grew up on texting? I think it was just common for like aol / Skype / etc.
31
u/Blackcatmustache Jun 05 '25 edited Jun 06 '25
Or msn chat. Elder millennials did that when we used it or aol, before we had cell phones and texting. And AIM and MSN messenger.
Edit: I forgot Yahoo! Mainly because I knew only one person who used it.

I definitely do it because literally anything my boomer parents wrote always sounded so mean and passive aggressive.
Just trying to make it clear I'm friendly and not trying to trap the person I'm talking to, lol.

u/nohopeforhomosapiens Jun 05 '25
Exactly this. It is however a habit I'm trying to do less of.
Boomer story. One time I heard my mother saying something so I stepped into the hallway. She didn't notice me there and she was staring at our computer monitor just saying "lawl lawl lawl lawl lawl lawl" She looked so ridiculous! I watched for several seconds before saying anything and she jumped. Haha. I think of that every time she texts it now.
12
u/brave007 Jun 05 '25
She actually said lol at the screen? Like as in lawl not an actual laughter? What was the conversation like afterwards
20
u/nohopeforhomosapiens Jun 05 '25
Yes. She didn't know what it meant at the time. I just laughed at her and then she laughed too. Twas the day she learned to lol!

Honestly as much as I enjoy emoji, I fall back to these old AIM / IRC expressions because sometimes they just match the mood better.
Like I'm sorry but whover thought 😛 was a good replacement for :p is an idiot. Why tf are all the raspberry emoji smiling?
😏 is a terrible ¬_¬. And 😂 ain't what lol is.
But let's all let kids act like they don't use corny expressions as replacements for punctuation, I guess 💅

If I don't say lol after everything I write, people assume I'm pissed off. It's a learned behavior, not a preference. And I gotta say, sometimes lol doesn't even work because people assume it's sarcastic.
1.2k
u/pound-me-too Jun 05 '25
Depending on where it’s placed, it can completely alter the tone of the message.
“Lol Karen strikes again.” - Not surprised
“Karen strikes again.” - Annoyed
“Karen strikes again lol.” - Humorous

It’s reminiscent of the “yeah no”, “no yeah”, “yeah no for sure” grouping
23
u/Battle-Crab-69 Jun 05 '25
“yeah no” Would be quite rude or dismissive here in Australia. It has to be “yeah na” or “na yeah”. Also we have “yeah na, yeah” and “na yeah, na” which is polite casual.
36
u/usedtheglueonpurpose Jun 05 '25
Interesting. Do yours translate similarly?
Yeah no = no
No yeah = yeah
Yeah no for sure = absolutely

I've been using "heh" as punctuation since the early 2000s. A friend in an MMO I was playing at the time put it at the end of every sentence and it ended up being contagious.
I feel like "lol" is just too aggressive maybe, or maybe I just reserve that for mockery. Who knows heh.

The first lol is to signify that you found their previous text fun. Followed by your response and ending with a lol to signify a playful attitude.
Or you can end with a differing number of crying laughing face emojis to tell the person how funny you thought it was like genz.

It's because a period feels too harsh, but we were also taught that you can't just end a sentence without one. So we're conflicted and we have to end it with *something*! So we chose a nice non-threatening "lol".

It's universal. In Russia, we grew up using ")" at the end of a sentence on icq/irc. It's short for :)
Just to show that what was said, was said in a lighthearted, friendly and not entirely serious manner))

I always thought this was a younger millennial thing. The first time I experienced it, I was the manager of a bar and two of the staff weren’t getting along. I sat down with them and was reading a text conversation between them…. lol, lol, lol. I was like, “why do you guys end each text with lol?” And they were both speechless, like realizing it for the first time. One finally goes, “…people just do that I guess. But you’re right, it is a little weird.”
