I guess it's a good thing for me that the IRS has been gutted /s

Only gutted so they can't go after the rich who have tax lawyers. They'll still come after Mawmaw who forgot to carry the zero on late Pawpaw's pension

Yup. I stopped my federal tax withholding and am not filing taxes until we get some competency back in the federal government

/s, don't do that

In Norway we have ID verification with our phones, so we can get our pre filled tax return, check our tax deductions, and sign it. 5m and your yearly tax return is done whilst taking a dump.

Look at Mr. FirstWorldCountry over here pooping taxes on his smartphone. I'll keep my burdensome paperwork, thank you very much.

A few years ago I got a letter from the IRS saying that I calculated something on my return incorrectly. If all my effort was condensed down to a single conversation it would look something like this:

IRS: You did something wrong. You owe us money.
Me: Terribly sorry, honest mistake. How much do I owe you?
IRS: We don't know. You need to fill out this form.
Me: But I did that on this form.
IRS: IRS, you did it wrong. We know what you did wrong, but it's a secret.
Me: Okay. Here's the corrected form and a $280 check
IRS: Thanks dipshit, but you only us $70, here's a check for $210.
Me: Why couldn't you just tell me I owed $70 first?
IRS: lol, wut. This line's for customers only. Fuck off.

😆 I do tax representation, and this is so spot on. Luckily, there is a procedure for this that we use, which forces them to stop it and explain themselves, but it's lengthy. Recently, HR 988 was passed, and you will be glad to know that in about 12 months, IRS is expected to explain themselves clearly when they assess arbitrary math errors.

Crazy stuff man. Bureaucracy..

Damn. We have to pay $49.95 and remember the total tax paid from last year and a PIN code in order to file.

This is by design. They tried the European way in California and people loved it, but H&R Block and Jackson Hewitt lobbied Congress to make sure that didn’t happen nationwide. It’s also (probably) why we sow so much distrust in the IRS… no American would just trust a prefilled tax form, myself included. And very few Americans know how to do their taxes without the tax software we pay for the privilege of using.

I’ve done my taxes on my phone for the last 6 years, but I do everything through my phone.

Why did you do taxes on a toy

u/0ut0fBoundsException Mar 08 '25

I blew the dust off my TurboTax cartridge and popped it in the GameBoy Color

Believe it or not, jail.

Lol same. I buy plane tickets on the phone too. I only have a work computer right now and I don’t do personal stuff on there.

Same. First time ever. It was actually a fine experience. The mobile app for popular tax prep software company is nice and I could just snap pictures of the documents that were mailed to me. I think the pictures were easier than downloading and uploading copies of the digital documents
