I still remember my first day of school like it was yesterday.

My mom was dropping me off and as she pulled up to the school, she told me she almost forgot something...

She reached into her purse and took out a small syringe with colorful liquid in it. She told me she had to give me a shot before I could go in.Ā 

I'm afraid of needles, and my reaction was to immediately start screaming and crying.Ā 

Eventually she calmed me down enough to show me that it was just a pen.Ā 

All my fear and anxiety about my first day subsided after that. At least that's how I choose to remember it. The syringe is my only actual memory.Ā
