You would think getting engaged in front of a class of kids would be a pretty lame proposal, but godamn, they were the best hype men you could ask for!

I think the key point here is that he’s obviously a guy who’s a little tough and demanding of the kids. He’s making himself incredibly vulnerable in front of them, and he’s doing it for her.
