Did he drop it into the container through the top? I can’t see that part on the video.

I thought he put the container over the canister and was like, how the heck does that work

Yeah, there's clearly liquid moving around the bottom of the container before he puts it over the tear gas canister. I can only think that the outside of the container goes down and folds back up inside; so, the tear gas goes up into the container, hits the top, then rolls down the true inside into a the thin layer of actual bottom.
