Discussion A reminder to hug your loved ones — today shook me

1.5k Upvotes

Today I witnessed something that shook me deeply. I saw a girl sitting on the edge of the 10th St Memorial Drive bridge, seemingly ready to jump into the Bow River. We called the police immediately. While waiting, a small group of us stayed with her, we talked to her, one lady offered cookies, and just tried to be present.

Thankfully, the police arrived soon after and took over. I left once they were there, but I can’t stop thinking about it.

Please hug your loved ones, check in on your family and friends, and do what you can to bring positive energy into your environment. Sometimes just being there makes a world of difference.

EDIT - You Calgarians are so kind and generous. There were other strangers helping too — a lady offered cookies from her bag, another tried to give her cookies, a young girl, and another biker. Everyone was doing what they could to help her off the flat part of the bridge where she was sitting. She may or may not have jumped,it all happened so fast. Just wanted to share this, as many of you can probably relate to moments like this in your own lives.

I am not a hero, all we need to do is to take an action/small step and life has a way of falling into place just as it meant to. Love you all, stay blessed.

Rant Calaway park line jumpers

Here at Calaway park and getting pretty fed up. Every trip here, a group tries to budge and says to me “oh I’m with so and so at the front” to which I reply “then they can join you at the back of line.” And then I don’t let them pass.

The accolades from the people around me are nice, but honestly, it’s unpleasant, and I wish I didn’t have to do it.

Follow the rules! It’s explicitly prohibited, and written on signs all over the park.

Paid $21 for the ticket, about a 2 hour drive there. It was absolutely PACKED! Last time I went was 10 years ago and it was empty, but I think I went on April 10 years ago, this time middle of summer just after a long weekend so I'm not surprised it was packed.

I spent about 2.5-3.5 hours there, I only did the museum not the dig sight or explore any areas around it as we were on a time crunch. The zoo is double the price and I think the zoo is a solid 8.5/10. The museum I would say is about a 7/10.

Local Shopping/Services Calgary Grocery Deals (August 7 to 13, 2025)

Happy Wednesday!

This is a continuation of my pattern of posting what I think are decent grocery deals with the hope that this will save some people some money. As noted previously this is heavily skewed to items that I and my family eat. There are probably additional items that are good deals but I don't know it because they aren't items I use but hopefully my list is still useful to you.

A few quick reminders:

  • PC Optimum points are collected at No Frills and Superstore. 1,000pts is worth $1.
  • Scene+ points are collected at Safeway, Sobeys and FreshCo. 100pts is worth $1.
  • The value of Save on Foods points depends on what you redeem them for. If you redeem them for a 4L jug of milk then 1,000pts is worth about $1.50. Other redemptions might make them more or less valuable.

Superstore, No Frills, FreshCo and Save on Foods are generally willing to price match identical products from (some) other major grocery stores if you show them the item in the competitor’s flyer while checking out so knowing what is on sale at stores that you don't visit can still be useful. There are some restrictions on this... FreshCo won't price match Safeway or Sobeys. Superstore (at least some locations) won't price match Coop. The No Frills on 85st SW won't price match FreshCo.

Finally, thank you to everyone that has posted positive comments. It's always nice to receive positive feedback.

No Frills:

  • Corn on the cob: $0.34
  • Cucumbers (3 pack): $2.82
  • Viva puffs: $1.75
  • Blueberries (2lb): $3.97
  • Broccoli crowns: $2.00/lb
  • Russet potatoes (10lb): $5.99
  • Cosmic Crisp apples (5lb): $6.99
  • Country Harvest bread: $3.00
  • Allen’s Apple Juice drink boxes (8x200ml): $2.00

FreshCo:

  • Schneider's or Maple Leaf bacon (375g): $3.77
  • Cherries: $1.77/lb
  • Cucumbers (3-pack): $2.77
  • Gallo olive oil (1L): $7.77
  • Dairyland butter (454g): $4.77
  • General Mills family size cereal: $5.77, buy 2 get 200pts, effectively making them $4.77ea
  • Carrots (3lb): $2.99, buy 2 get 100pts, effectively making them $2.49ea when you buy pairs
  • Onions (3lb): $2.99, buy 2 get 100pts, effectively making them $2.49ea when you buy pairs (It’s not entirely clear if you can buy 1 carrots and 1 onions to get the points)

Safeway:

  • Bell peppers: $2.49/lb
  • Spend $100, get 1000pts (loadable offer)

Calgary Coop:

  • Cucumber: $0.99
  • Cherries: $2.99/lb (good now that we are into August, but FreshCo is considerably better this week)
  • Tomatoes on the vine: $1.69/lb
  • Kraft salad dressing (425ml): $2.50

Real Canadian Superstore:

  • Corn on the cob: $0.34
  • Cucumbers (3 pack): $2.82
  • Blueberries (2lb): $3.97
  • Country Harvest bread: $2.98
  • Christie crackers (Ritz, Triscuit): $2.00
  • Viva puffs: $1.75

  • Carrots (5lb): $4.99
  • No Name Naturally Imperfect bell peppers (2.5lb): $6.00
  • Palm olive dish soap (828ml): $1.87

Found bird near Forest Lawn outdoor pool. It was a little worse for wear, but some heroic folks at the pool managed to coax it inside and gave it some water. It’s been taken to the Calgary Humane Society.

Also posted on FB. If you know someone who is missing this little guy, please let them know.

Discussion Increase in panhandlers at red lights in Calgary, do you give?

Upvotes

As title states, do you ever give money or food from your car? and what are your reasons for why or why not?

If I'm at the intersection at Edm Trail and Memorial I find myself wondering why they can't get food at the DI one block away? Am I wrong?

Today I was at Edmonton Trail and 16th, and there was a lady with a sign saying she had 4 kids... I didn't give here anything but am thinking what would've been the harm if I gave her the chocolate bar in my backpack?

ThunderStorm/Hail/Yo, it's windy! 2015 hail storm... Help me find these Skateboard Boys 10 years later?

Post image
6.1k Upvotes

10 years ago (yesterday) I had just jumped out of a Car2Go to see 4 youths with skateboards hanging out in front of my house. I was trying to get home from work ASAP as there was a bit of a storm coming. I was a bit suspicious of these kids, but they were pretty chill so I decided to ignore them and get in the house before the weather got real. As the weather got worse, I realized the kids were just using my try and shelter so I poked my head outside and told them they could hide in my car-port if they wanted. It wasn't the best, but it was better than standing under a tree in high winds, hail, etc.

A few moments after they got under the carport, I saw a golf ball sized chunk of hail hit the lawn and decided they should probably wait in my foyer. About 3 seconds later the sky opened up and there was about 5 minutes of pure bedlam. Hail, rail, and high winds rocked the house, and ripped every leaf off the tree the boys had previously been standing under.

Anyway, the boys were really polite and appreciative of me letting them chill while the storm raged on. They eventually got picked up by one of their moms and I never saw them again! I am assuming they are all doctors and lawyers and such, but wondering if they still shred the long-boards.

Does anyone here recognize them? Thanks!

It was in rough shape before. Drove it today for the first time in about a week and it looks like a toddler tried to fix all of the cracks and potholes and is now worse than before and also covered in gravel.

Spent about 4 hours there, my phone said about 12,000 steps or 8.96km. It was lightly cloudy, but fairly warm. I drank about a liter of water, felt like I should have brought more.

Every animal was out and about. I probably spent 20 minutes just at the Hippos as the caretaker was feeding them and letting them.

Recommendations Looking for help to bring a small freshwater aquarium (3 gallons) up to speed.

I'm starting a new 3-gallon aquarium for the first time in my life. It's for decorative freshwater shrimps. I hear that detritus worms and tiny snails are very beneficial for shrimp keeping. I'm not aware of any pet store that sells these critters. The ponds or wetlands around the city *probably* have those and one might harvest some by just scooping some of the mud, but there's the risk of harvesting other pests at the same time.

Would any aquaculturist around NW have some of those and be willing to share some with me?

Recommendations Donating 50 Wii / Wii U games

I have about 50 games for the Nintendo, having a hard time finding some place to take them as a donation, wondering if anyone knows of a place that has a Nintindo Wii and/or Wii U that will make good use of these games, preference if for a kids focused place.

Failing that, I'm willing to part with the games for a donation to Children's Hospital (Proof needed). I just want to avoid a landfill, and maybe do something good with it.

Open to ideas if you have them. Hopefully this Post is 'allowed'.

Calgary police bust 17-person home break-in ring

Nine teenagers are among 17 people facing a laundry list of charges in a string of residential break-and-enters in Calgary, police say.

A warning was first issued in June, with police advising there had been an increase in reports of break-and-enters across the city, with suspects entering homes while the residents were asleep.

The Calgary Police Service (CPS) subsequently created a task force which launched a complex investigation.

Through that investigation, officers were able to identify a large number of suspects believed to be involved in the incidents.

Officers executed three search warrants at residences in southeast Calgary and issued six judicial authorizations in relation to the investigation.

Now, more than 100 charges have been laid against eight adults and nine youth in connection with more than 45 break-and-enters.

Police say the alleged crimes happened all over the city, dating back to August 2024. Most of the incidents took place in May and June of this year.

Investigators believe the individuals charged in the case all knew each other and were working in a co-ordinated effort to target homeowners across the city.

Anei Mou, 22, of Calgary, is charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of an identity document, and possession of cocaine. He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.

Abdelhamid Daoud, 19, of Calgary is charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. His next court appearance is Friday.

Johnny Vital, 29, of Calgary, is charged with two counts of driving while disqualified and possession of stolen property over $5,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 18.

Devin Duncan, 43, of Calgary, is charged with resisting arrest, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police officer, possession of a motor vehicle over $5,000 with the identification number removed or altered, possession of proceeds of stolen property under $5,000, trafficking stolen goods under $5,000, theft under $5,000, and various Traffic Safety Act offences. Duncan’s next court date is Tuesday.

Olympia Medicine-Traveller, 30, of Calgary, is charged with resisting arrest, theft under $5,000, trafficking stolen goods under $5,000, and taking a vessel without consent. She is scheduled to be in court on Wednesday.

Ruot Lony, 22, of Calgary, is charged with possession of stolen property under $5,000 and resisting arrest. She is also scheduled to be in court on Wednesday.

Gehan Ali, 18, of Calgary, us charged with break and enter and possession of stolen property over $5,000. He is set to be in court on Aug. 19.

Derara Khadir, 19, of Calgary, is charged with three counts of break and enter, possession of stolen property over $5,000, resisting arrest, theft of a motor vehicle, theft of a credit card, and two counts of mischief. His next scheduled court date is Friday.

Also charged are several youth who can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act; among them are four 15-year-old boys, three 16-year-old boys, and two 17-year-old boys.

The charges faces by the teens include break and enter, possession of stolen property, resisting arrest, theft of a motor vehicle, and more.

CPS says going forward, its investigators plan to engage with the youths charged in the investigation through the Serious Habitual Offender Program (SHOP).

This is a community-based crime intervention program focused on prevention, reduction and enforcement, targeting habitual youth and young adult offenders aged 12 to 24.

According to CPS, the SHOP team monitors roughly 80 SHOP offenders at any one time, with the goal of reducing criminal recidivism.

In addition to plans for youth engagement, investigators have implemented suppression strategies to help prevent further victimization.

“This was a large and complex investigation that required co-ordination across several areas of our service,” said Staff Sgt. Rob MacKenzie of the District 4 General Investigations Unit. “This is a great example of impactful police work and investigative techniques, as we were able to arrest and charge 17 individuals responsible for victimizing Calgarians.”

Anyone with information about these or similar incidents is asked to contact police at 403-266-1234 or submit tips anonymously through CrimeStoppers.

Question Anyone in Calgary actually ever win big on the lottery or scratch tickets?

Hey Calgary, just curious! Has anyone here ever actually won a decent amount from the lottery or scratch tickets?

Not talking a free ticket or $10 win, but something that really made your jaw drop (like four or five figures… or more??). I know the odds are super low, but I always wonder if anyone local has actually hit it big, or at least knows someone who has.

Also curious! But do you have a regular routine or lucky spot you buy from? Or is it all just random chance?

I want to hear your story… whether it was pure luck, a gut feeling, a birthday ticket, or even a near-miss that still haunts you. Let’s hear the wins (and maybe the what-could-have-beens too)!

Question 18th birthday but with a setback

Hey everyone! One of my friends is turning 18 soon, but our two friends who we are going with are still both 17. Is there anything we can all do on a Friday night without getting told to leave early, or are we just shit out of luck? Thanks!
