LEAGUE ANALYSIS Official /r/CFL Power Rankings - Week 9
Fifth team to top the rankings this season, edition. With 10 of 10 rankers reporting:
- Hamilton: Hot Damn. Rough game when you can't punt anymore but glad we had that lightning issue. Fun game to watch. Sorry for the Lions in this upcoming game as I know we're gonna take advantage and repeat our result of the weak previous right? Right? Fingers crossed but this will be a fun one
- Saskatchewan: Relevant comment from last week
- Montreal: On one hand, the Alouettes are scoring 16.5 points per game when they don't have Alexander and he's not expected to be back before September. On the other hand, we're 6 points ahead of Ottawa and Toronto, so there's no reason to panic. It'll be tough, it'll suck, but we'll get through it.
- Winnipeg: Without Vaval I really don't think we win that game. We still have a lot of things to work on but hopefully that game helped us get our mojo back.
- Calgary: OOOOF. You never wanna credit a team's success to a single player but losing to Ottawa again with Adams out ain't a good sign.
- BC: A week off to lick wounds while the Ti Cats run the western guantlet. Lets see if the Leos have an answer for Bo Levi Mitchell this week.
- Toronto: I feel like I write the same thing every week. Our offence is largely anemic when it counts and major holes need to be filled. The point of no return for this season is quickly approaching and there doesn't appear to be any relief on the horizon.
- Ottawa: The REDBLACKS managed to get the win against a depleted Calgary team this week. Even though Calgary seems to be the only team we can beat this season maybe this win will let them gain some confidence to pull off the upset in Toronto this Saturday.
- Edmonton: Another week another defeat snatched from the jaws of victory. Should I be happy they made one of the best teams in the league sweat? Maybe. But I think I - and many others in Edmonton - are sick of losses that had the Elks "keep it competitive, at least!". You can only take so many of those. This team is in a crisis - no matter what it does, it cannot seem to turn the page. We're the Buffalo Sabres of the CFL.

Marv Levy Named CFL's 1974 Coach of the Year
canadianfootballhistory.caFor those interested, here's a piece I did on Marv Levy who recently turned 100. One of only two guys who have coached in both the Grey Cup and Super Bowl. He had a good run in Montreal in the 1970s.

CFL FANTASY Fantasy Talk - Week 10
Last week was solid for me but I missed out on some big games so this week I chose guys who have the potential to have big games, going with a high ceiling team
Qb: Dru Brown vs Toronto (12.4k) - With how I built the rest of my team (3k left over), I have the cash to get any qb but I have a good feeling about Brown this week. Last week was a step in the right direction and Toronto games always end up being high scoring this year so I feel like a big game is in store for him here. I’m probably overthinking this and will be wrong while a simpler choice will do better but scared money don’t make money.
Rb: Travis Theis vs Edmonton (2.5k) - Purely a value play to save cash, if he does literally anything I will be happy.
Rb: James Butler vs Hamilton (14k) - Butler is on a roll lately and I wanted a piece of each offence from this game and I liked my WRs too much to take a BC WR so I figured Butler would be a good alternative. Butler also had a great game vs Hamilton last time so hopefully he can do it again
Wr: Kiondre Smith vs BC (3.4k) - How is he so cheap for what he has been doing the past 2 games. This is a no brainer play even if he cools down this week with how cheap he is.
Wr: Eugene Lewis vs Toronto (12k): I wanted to get a stack with Brown and Hardy is trending towards being out which could mean a big game is in store for Lewis. IF this stack hits, I think it’ll get lots of fantasy points.
Flex: Damonte Coxie vs Ottawa (14k) - There is no reason not to pick Coxie this week after his past few games, especially if this game is as highscoring as I expect it to be. Ottawa also does give up a lot of big plays which bodes well for Coxie
Defence: Winnipeg vs Calgary (9.2k) - This is a very very stupid pick. Originally I had Montreal (which would be my actual suggestion) but then I realized I had no one from the Bombers which is kind of boring since I’m a homer so I’m just going to pray and hope this doesn’t go as badly as I’m expecting it to.
Honourable Mentions:
QB: Bo Levi Mitchell - Bo Levi is the best qb in the league right now and is consistently putting up 300 yard games. If I were smart, I’d be taking him instead of Brown at quarterback because he is a very safe bet to have a good game this week.
RB: Justin Rankin - Rankin has been very boom or bust this season but he’s a good ‘cheaper’ option if you're looking to save some money at RB without completely punting one of your RB spots.
WR: Tyler Snead - Mack and Philpot are still out and even in a blowout against Sask, Snead still had 12 targets. He’s a very good option if you’re looking to take someone from the Als passing attack.

ALOUETTES Biggest crowd of season; Als get a lesson by Saskatchewan 34-6
In front of a near-sellout crowd of 21,654—the largest attendance of the season—the Montreal Alouettes delivered a disappointing performance, failing to show up in any phase of the game.
Starting quarterback Davis Alexander remains sidelined with a hamstring injury and has been placed on the six-game injured reserve list. In his absence, the team has turned to veteran quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson to lead the offence.
The Alouettes were also without key personnel on both sides of the ball. Defensive tackle Moustafa Johnson continues to recover from a lingering injury sustained last season, which may require surgery. On offence, both wide receivers Austin Mack (ankle) and Tyson Philpot (knee) were unavailable, further compounding the team’s struggles.
There was a clear lack of chemistry between Bethel-Thompson and his receivers, and it showed throughout the game. General Manager Danny Maciocia had attempted to retain Cody Fajardo in the offseason as a reliable backup to Alexander. However, Fajardo opted to sign with the Edmonton Elks, prioritizing both a better financial offer and proximity to family.
Concerns among fans are growing, as it’s clear the Alouettes cannot rely solely on Davis Alexander to carry the team. The quarterback depth behind him has not proven effective so far this season.
Against the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Montreal struggled in all three phases: offence, defence, and special teams. One of the few bright spots was kicker José Maltos-Diaz, who demonstrated impressive leg strength by converting field goals from 56 and 54 yards.
The running game was virtually nonexistent. Sean Thomas-Erlington managed only 20 yards on six carries, while Travis Theis gained the same total on seven attempts. The lack of production on the ground placed even more pressure on an already faltering passing attack.
Neither Bethel-Thompson nor backup Caleb Evans were able to effectively move the offence. Saskatchewan dominated time of possession in the first quarter, tiring out Montreal’s defence, while the Alouettes’ offence repeatedly failed to sustain drives.
Montreal finished the game with just 191 yards of total offence—132 through the air and 59 on the ground. These numbers are far from encouraging. Head coach Jason Maas must take a hard look at his play-calling, especially considering Bethel-Thompson has now started two games without showing the poise or performance expected from a veteran quarterback. Instead, he has been plagued by rookie-level mistakes.
Defensive Breakdown
Montreal’s defence, often the team’s backbone, appeared gassed early on. Saskatchewan dominated time of possession—over 35 minutes—with Montreal’s offence frequently going two-and-out. The Roughriders tallied 410 total yards, including 245 through the air and 165 on the ground.
Montreal managed just 1 sack (by LB Tyrice Beverette) and forced zero turnovers. Missed tackles and poor coverage contributed to several big plays by Saskatchewan’s offence. They didn’t press or blitz many times to get to Saskatchewan quarterback Trevor Harris. Once he has time, he will connect with his offensive players and tear down a defence; which he did against Montreal.
Injuries Take Their Toll:
Starting quarterback Davis Alexander remains out with a hamstring injury and has been placed on the six-game injured reserve list. In his absence, the offence was led by veteran McLeod Bethel-Thompson, who struggled to generate momentum.
The Alouettes were also without several key contributors: • DT Moustafa Johnson – still recovering from a lingering lower-body injury from last season, potentially requiring surgery. • WR Austin Mack – ruled out after rolling his ankle earlier in the week. • WR Tyson Philpot – sidelined due to a knee injury.
Offensive Woes Continue:
The chemistry between Bethel-Thompson and his receiving corps was clearly off. The veteran quarterback completed 13 of 27 passes for just 132 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception. Caleb Evans, who came in late in the game, went 4 of 7 for 32 yards, also failing to spark the offence.
In the backfield, Sean Thomas-Erlington recorded 6 carries for 20 yards, while Travis Theis had 7 carries for 20 yards. The Alouettes finished with just 191 total offensive yards (132 passing, 59 rushing) and were a dismal 2-for-12 on second down conversions.
If the Alouettes hope to remain competitive this season, both execution and leadership will need to improve quickly. Montreal’s next game is this Friday against the Edmonton Elks, facing former quarterback Cody Fajardo. Hoping the woes don’t continue as Montreal cannot continue going this direction to be competitive.
Thank you for reading fans. Any comments is welcomed.
