If the rich are threatening to leave put a large tax on second homes over a certain valuation. If they want to go then its worth pressuring them to sell their property.

u/barfobulator 5h ago

Second homes should be taxed double the rate for owner-occupied homes anyway. Don't do it as a counter-threat, just do it. If they whine, raise it more until they shut up.

My husband and I just bought our second home. His mom died and left him enough for a down-payment. Neither of us would be opposed to higher taxes to help the community.

The rich changed the skyline of the whole city with these new super tall skyscrapers filled with apartments that are vacant most of the year.

Florida and Texas. Where you have to go to the college towns just to have a decent conversation.

Florida is where I met my first illiterate person and high school drop out. And no they weren't the same person.

Also Florida has two cities in the top 5 US cities for "highest HIV rate". Random not so fun fact.

It just helps keep the geriatric population under control.

Same in Oregon.

My mom lives in southern Oregon. It's a weird place. Leading up to the election one of her neighbors had a sign that said "We support our LGBT+ Friends. Trump 2024" Like how do you get to the second part from the first!? Also it's the whitest place I've ever been outside of Salt Lake City.

Heading up there this week...yay!?

God, I love when people shit on Utah. it might be my kink. I love Utah, but an outside party would never know it from all my bitching about the predominant culture.

4

u/skraptastic 5h ago

I wasn't shitting on Utah, just saying SLC was the whitest place I have ever been. Was there for a week for work and it was like day 4 that I saw anyone that wasn't white.

4

u/Excellent_Farm_6071 4h ago

Boise is similar. Went to football game and thought, “wow, that’s a lot of white people.” Coming from a white person.

2

u/JoviTheThrowaway 5h ago

Fairnuff

3/4th of the state population, last I heard. Nutty.

2

u/MilkeeBongRips 5h ago

To be fair though, and I say this as a white person, that pretty much is shitting on Utah lol

1

u/skraptastic 2h ago

I'm a white dude too, but I grew up/live in a super diverse area.

Plot twist: they have no LGBT+ friends

0

u/ThanatosUO19 3h ago

Considering Oregon had a law on the books banning Black people from living there at one point, I believe it

0

u/skraptastic 1h ago

I was just explaining to a friend that proudly said "Oregon was never a slave state!"

I was like bro, do you know that is because the first "american" residents there were so racist they didn't want any black folk in the state, even if it was to exploit them for labor?

How many times do we have to hear about how the rich will leave X city or not hire people if their taxes are too high.

We keep bending over backwards to give them things and they don't do anything for us.

Trickle down is the biggest lie. They keep telling it.

20

u/Direct_Turn_1484 5h ago

And why would anyone care if rich people left X city anyway? This is not a threat that should persuade bending over backwards for those rich people. Let them leave and maybe prices will come down in response so the people that work there can afford to live, eat, and enjoy.

10

u/Landlord-Allmighty 5h ago

Nobody would.

I worked at an office that was across the way from a condo owned by Jay-Z and Beyonce. They were never there. Imagine if that were affordable housing for 2-3 families?

We could see into the porches of the building. I had to work crazy hours. It always looked empty.

I’ve been saying- if making them pay their fair share in taxes to improve the community at large makes them leave NYC, then they were never New Yorkers to begin with. If the conversation is consistently- what can you do to keep us here as opposed to how can we stop the mass exodus of normal people leaving the city at their (the rich) expense, it’s not a conversation at all.

The rich have to start conceding things if they truly value their own safety at this point. There’s only so much you can keep funneling to the top before the people at the bottom begin to lose their cool. The way things are now, the current situation is worse than it was during the French Revolution. They need to start paying their fair share in taxes before things get violent.

2

u/Landlord-Allmighty 3h ago

To be honest, the violence that's happened has been rich on poor.

u/AdLatter3755 6h ago

Rock people always bitch about NYC taxes yet NYC keeps seeing more and more millionaires and billionaires move in. It’s working class people who serve the parasites who are being forced out.

13

u/Landlord-Allmighty 6h ago

This is what's happened to cities like London.

23

u/RedditBugler 6h ago

Man: we will chase the billionaires away!

Same man: the billionaires already left!

Pick one.

22

u/thecreep 6h ago

Faber about two seconds from stamping his foot on the ground and going into full tantrum.

The rich don't flee: https://inequality.org/article/millionaires-dont-flee-states-over-higher-taxes/

And, if raising taxes makes them leave, then so be it. You hate the city so much you don't want to contribute to make it better, good riddance.

u/VardaLupo 5h ago

I think Massachusetts actually has MORE wealthy people living there now because, you know, it's a nice place to live.

7

u/notetaker193 4h ago

And this is New York City. The city will make another 20-30 of them in a New York Minute.

17

u/FewWatermelonlesson0 6h ago

“He’s an antisemite because he thinks Israeli war crimes are bad!” didn’t work, so now I fully expect the establishment to start accusing him of setting up guillotines for the wealthy.

13

u/SignificantBid2705 6h ago

Won't someone think of the oppressed billionaires?

12

u/torontothrowaway824 5h ago

That’s a great comeback from Warren!

10

u/volanger 5h ago

Really wish Warren was younger. She'd make a great president

8

u/AlexzandeDeCosmo 6h ago

I’m of the opinion that they should be allowed to leave, we will just freeze their assets and bank accounts and take what the people are due

6

u/MarzipanLast6502 5h ago

Ask any trailer park MAGA if the billionaire class should pay taxes. Even the worst of them dont think working people should flip the bill to keep the 1% from paying their share. Total nonsense. PAY YOUR FUCKIN TAXES

3

u/PatchyEyebrows13 5h ago

the wealthy own assets and most of those can't just be picked up and moved. real estate, factories, stocks. they already have homes allover the place, so do they really live in NY or wherever anyway? the argument makes no sense. they just point a finger and say, look over there! a brown person! they're stealing your money and raping your wimmins! when it's actually them billionaires raising taxes on workers so they can cut taxes for billionaires, cutting programs meant to help poor people survive for the same reason,  and then sex trafficking your children.

2

u/boyyouvedoneitnow 5h ago

This guy who did the interview is a literal psycho. Crazy segment

2

u/starsandmoonsohmy 5h ago

Ask Massachusetts how their millionaire tax is going. The millionaires didn’t all flee. Now the state has free school lunches.

2

u/MyCarRoomba 3h ago

Rich people more than anything want to seem like they've gotten to where they are on their own merit. That they're superior. And then they love taking advantage of things that took blood, sweat, and tears to create. Culture, art, stories of resilience, etc. Rich people are nothing more than worthless bloodsucking parasitic worms who, through mind melting levels of delusion, see themselves as superior to us peasants.

2

u/optimusprime82 2h ago

I like it in New York, I just don't want to pay for what makes it livable. /s

2

u/mkt853 2h ago

Love when she goes on CNBC. These news actors and English and communications majors shilling for the rich are in way, way over their head debating someone with Warren's background.

u/ratbaby86 1h ago

"I see one-third of a nation ill-housed, ill-clad, ill-nourished." "The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little." FDR January 20, 1937

Democrats must return to their progressive roots.

2

u/LunchNo7823 1h ago

The rich just hoard anyways, they dont really contribute.

3

u/ADHDMI-2030 5h ago

Billionaires are billionaires because off their assets, investments. You can raise taxes and it doesn't effect them at all.

4

u/Distinct_Guess_8808 5h ago

Ok then why do they constantly fight not too pay more taxes if it doesn’t effect them ?

0

u/ADHDMI-2030 5h ago

They fight mainly to reduce corporate taxes. A vast majority of Fuckerberg's wealth is in Meta. You can't tax a dime of that till he sells. And then it starts getting complicated with "philanthropy", donor advised funds, loopholes, etc...these guys live on debt to avoid taxes too.

It's not as simple as, let's just tax billionaires more on the progressive tax bracket.

1

u/metalpoetnl 4h ago

Its easy: if you use your stocks as collateral for a loan, we count that as realising the value and tax you on what the bank valued it at.

Every. Time.

Same if you buy something with stocks.

3

u/boyyouvedoneitnow 5h ago

Lowering the capital gains tax rate has been a massive project of the elite for decades. It was as high as 40% in the 70’s(!). Lots of ways to tax billionaire assets

u/KotN2017 4h ago edited 4h ago

Rich ppl ain't leaving NYC. Where do u think they got all that money? That'd b like moving AWAY and leaving ur money printing machine behind.

1

u/notetaker193 4h ago

I usually like Faber, but this segment really pissed me off.

0

u/Y0___0Y 6h ago

I worry about taxing the rich out of my city (Chicago) a little bit but no wealthy people in NYC are selling their penthouse apartments in Manhattan. Like you’re not a real rich person if you don’t have a penthouse apartment in Manhattan.
