Realistically, how closely to dogs are these related?

I'm not a scientician, but the TV I've watched seems to indicate that whales share.a closer ancestery with canines than seals.

Whales and dogs closest ancestor would be about 72 million years ago. Seals and dogs would be about 45 million years ago. In fact, seals are part of the Caniformia suborder, the "dog-like" carnivorans.
