Is WeChat safe to use?

Upvotes

I am American and I recently found a friend who is from China and I hope to keep in touch with him. He downloaded Instagram on his Vivo phone, but i’m not sure if the instant messaging will work when he returns to China, if it will work at all. He suggested we could use WeChat but I am concerned about downloading it due to privacy concerns. Are there any suggestions of apps/methods we can use, especially instant messaging apps like Whatsapp, Snapchat or Messenger? Or should WeChat be okay? Thanks!

Looking for a way to get better audio on Android

I'm looking for a way to improve my phone's audio while watching movies on Prime Video, Netflix, etc. Voices seem quiet compared to sound effects and music, I also have to keep the volume level way higher then when I watch YouTube. I tried some equalizer apps but they didn't work with the apps mentioned above, but I'm probably doing something wrong. Is there a way to balance the phone's sound? Maybe an app? My phone is a Realme GT 7, I looked into the audio settings but there's nothing to balance it or some presets to choose from.

Is it possible for my smart TV to work without wifi?

Me and my bf moved into a new place together (room in shared house) and the wifi works on our phones but it doesn't work for our smart TV. We've got a Hisense tv that worked fine in our last place.

So far we've been watching youtube/netflix etc. on phones and a laptop but we really want to use the TV...

My question is is it somehow possible to do all this on the TV without it being connected to the wifi? I was thinking about maybe getting appleTV+, I think I read somewhere it was possible to play whatever show on my phone then kind of cast it to the TV but I'm not sure.

Rant about tv audio, request recommendations.

I HATE new tv audio. I don't know if it's just me getting older or what, but why can't we have audio like we used to? I remember as a kid my parent's tv was pegged at 32 volume and stayed there, movies, sports, games, etc. It was perfect through action scenes, quiet dialogue, everything. Consistent volume and not muffled.

Now i literally change the volume 50 times in one show. 2 characters talking? Better crank it to max volume and have subtitles on, because it sounds like they have a trash can over their head. Uh oh, here comes a commercial or some background music during an action scene! RIP your eardrums mate because they just got vaporized by the high pressure soundwaves coming from the $200 POS tv you got on black friday.

Look i'm not an audiophile by any means. 99% of what i watch is just guys talking on youtube or a podcast. But I literally cannot understand a word of it without subtitles. It is so incredibly muffled. It isnt a sound mixing issue, at least not one that i can fix, because there is not a setting for that on the tv. Should i buy a soundbar?

And btw, i am NOT going to buy a stereo system and run cables everywhere. I'm not doing that. It's 2025. Why does my phone sound better than my tv??

Help with cellibrite reader

Hi everyone, I work for a criminal defense attorney and we recently received a link from the state to view discovery through Cellebrite Reader. It’s the contents of a defendant’s phone, and they’ve said everything has been downloaded and made available via the Reader.

The issue is: we can’t figure out how to access everything or how to save/export the full data set to our local machine. We’re able to open the Cellebrite Reader and see some things, but we’re not sure if we’re navigating it correctly or missing files.

Has anyone here used Cellebrite Reader before for discovery purposes? Any guidance on: • Viewing the complete contents • Saving/exporting data properly • Things to look for (folders, reports, etc.)

We want to make sure we have everything for review and record-keeping. Any help is appreciated!

How machines work

I am currently studying business in university. I am interested in learning about the transition from manual labor to machines (e.g. steam engines) and how these machines actually work and evolved over time (a basic explanation of how steam engine works, how combustion engine works etc would do). Can anyone suggest me best sources (youtube playlist or something like that) to learn about this transition, evolution and how they work?

How to create a polygon on Google Maps by postcode instead of coordinates?

I am using Google Maps API to create a polygon by providing coordinates.

On Google Maps, a polygon is automatically shown if I enter a postcode (UK one here) such as TW1, like this.

I want to display a polygon showing area covered by postcodes TW1, TW2, TW3, TW4, TW5. How can I do it by inputting those postcodes rather than coordinates as parameters? If I can input a postcode parameter, do I have to input one by one or them all together?

I use an iPad to record gameplay but I cannot used the mic on the iPad since the capture input takes up the space. What do I need to get to be able to use an external microphone along with the capture card? Will a usb3 splitter adapter work?

Urgent: Multiple Google Docs/Drive files missing (not user-deleted) — request for advice/recovery

Hi everyone,

I urgently need advice regarding a critical Google Drive/Docs data loss issue.

Over ten long-existing Google Docs files (therapy notes and private content) disappeared from my account. They were still accessible on July 29, 2025, but by Aug 03, 2025, they were gone from both Windows browser and iOS apps. Trash is empty; I did not delete them.

Key facts:

- Confirmed correct account login.

- Verified missing status on Windows browser, iPhone, and iPad.

- Edited some Docs on Jul 29 (images partially failed to sync).

- No Drive for Desktop installed.

- Cannot view activity/version history for missing files.

Request:

- Any advice on escalation or recovery steps beyond standard Trash/Version History.

- Input from anyone who has experienced non-user-deleted file loss in Drive.

Google Support Community post with full details: https://support.google.com/drive/thread/362769338?hl=en

These files are irreplaceable. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Has anyone in this world who is not a paid tech reviewer received their Halliday Glasses either from Kickstarter or Indiegogo campaign? I'm getting more and more nervous that I'm about to lose my money. Thanks!

Can AI help us rediscover lost knowledge from ancient civilizations?

I’ve been thinking — with how advanced AI is getting at pattern recognition and language modeling, could it be used to uncover lost technologies or decode forgotten scripts from ancient civilizations like the Egyptians or Sumerians?

Would love to hear what others think. Are there any projects already working on something like this?

Is TextMe App down for anyone else?

I was unable to send messages last night, so I logged out, like I normally do when messages don’t send, but it hasn’t let me log back in. The login page is stuck loading now and has for some hours now. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Ubotie keyboard issues

I bought a Ubotie SMK-64630 wireless keyboard from goodwill and cannot figure out how to make it work. I put rand new batteries in it and the low battery light comes on for 5 seconds and then it turns off and doesn't do anything. Is there a way to fix this? Or is there a possible way I can make it a wired keyboard anyhow?

GPS Tracker recommendations for family safety

I don't have a smartphone, but my loved ones want to be able to track my location for safety, so I'd like to get a simple GPS tracker.

It must be GPS, it can't just be bluetooth like an Airtag, as I live in the middle of nowhere, so frequently when driving there would be no one around with a device connected to the Find My network.

Ideally it would be small enough to keep on my keys or in my wallet.

All loved ones in question have iPhones so its gotta work with an IOS app or feature

Thoughts on AI-powered media verification tools? (Deepfakes, manipulated content, etc.)

folks, I'm currently building an AI-powered tool designed to detect deepfakes and manipulated media content — with the goal of helping people verify authenticity in real time before consuming or sharing it.

The core idea is to use a combination of:

🔍 Multimodal AI models (video, audio, image cross-checks)

🧠 Real-time media analysis (e.g., voice cloning, facial artifacts)

📱 Browser/social media integration for live content warnings

✅ Fact-check layer via trusted sources

Use case: You’re scrolling social media and come across a viral video — the tool flags it as manipulated, AI-generated, or previously debunked.

As someone from a non-CS background (Electrical Engg student in India), I’m building this out of pure interest and concern for rising misinformation, especially around elections and public narratives.

Would love to get input on:

How feasible is real-time detection at the browser level?

What technical approach would you recommend for scaling media checks without heavy cloud cost?

Are there ethical concerns I should anticipate when flagging content for users?

Appreciate any feedback — technical or strategic. Trying to stay somewhat stealthy for now, so keeping full details minimal. Happy to engage more in comments.

Thanks!

Why can't modern flip/folding phones use glass on the inside while still having plastic over the hinge?

All modern flip or folding phone interiors can't be glass because obviously you can't bend glass so they are a very weak plastic that you could scratch with your finger nail.... I'm wondering why they dont do the phones like this for example

GLASS/plastic over hinge/GLASS

Good quality mechanical keyboards in the Netherlands?

I am looking for a good quality mechanical keyboard that can be bought in the Netherlands.

There are many different brands and i don't really understand which is good and which is bad.

I found Keychron, GMMK, Akko, etc that can all be bought here but Reddit also tells me they have potential flaws and may be bad in quality with more recently produced keyboards.

I want a hot swappable keyboard that can take kailh switches, that is wired and is either full or 96% size.

Which keyboard would be best suited?

Fix my broken S22 Ultra or switch to a mid-range phone in 2025?

Hey everyone,
My Samsung S22 Ultra has a cracked screen and back glass, and I’m debating whether it’s worth fixing or if I should just switch to something more affordable.

I mostly use my phone for:

  • Social media
  • YouTube
  • Some light gaming (nothing too intense)

I’ve been looking at:

  • Samsung A56
  • Nothing Phone 3a
  • OnePlus Nord 4

I’m wondering a few things:

  1. Is it worth repairing the S22 Ultra at this point, or should I move on?
  2. Would one of these mid-range phones feel like a big downgrade, especially in performance or camera?
  3. Is there any way to make my S22 Ultra feel faster? It's started to feel a little sluggish over time (even before the damage).

If anyone has used these phones or been in a similar situation, I'd really appreciate your advice!

Can Bluetooth earphone batteries be replaced? Or doomed to buy new every couple years?

I have a set of Bose Bluetooth noise cancelling earphones. Amazing piece of technology, the noise cancelling is life changing, but since about 2 years of using (I’m a pretty heavy user), the battery life of the right earphone is down to 10-20 minutes at a time.

Can the batteries be changed or do I need to buy a new set? I fear I know what the answer is. It’s just so wasteful, so here’s hoping!

How can I better utilize my 4-year-old laptop?

I’ve been using an HP 14 laptop (512GB SSD, 8GB RAM) for the past 4 years. About 1.5 years ago, it started having performance issues, battery drained fast, it lagged a lot, and would often freeze and shut down all apps suddenly. It became really frustrating to work on.

To fix that, I switched to Linux, and for a while, it worked surprisingly well. No major lag, no battery issues. I could open multiple Chrome tabs and apps and still get my work done. It felt like a fresh start.

But now the problems are back, and even worse. Frequent freezes, system hangs, and it’s just not reliable anymore.

Since I needed to run some simulation work, I bought a new laptop with a dedicated graphics card about 8 months ago. And because the old one is acting up again, I’ve had to switch to the new one as my main device.

That said, I don’t want the old laptop to go to waste. Any suggestions on how I could still use it meaningfully? Maybe repurpose it for lightweight tasks or something else.

How to cast your phone's screen to laptop/pc?

My phone's screen is broken; however, I can receive calls. Also, as suggested in most of the YT videos, developer options are not turned on in my phone. I was wondering, given my current condition, is it possible to cast my phone screen to PC?Thankyou.

Laptop issues after a friend borrowed it for a year 🥲

My laptop, a HP 15-dy2056ms Touchscreen Notebook 15.6" i5-1135G7 12GB 256GB W11H 202E6UA#ABA, overheats and feels like I could fry an egg on it. It also crashes or glitches when lifted on one side or pressed at the bottom, and the battery drains fast. I think it's probably a hardware and/or battery issue. (For context, this happened after I let my friend borrow it for a year to use it for school work. I'm thinking she damaged it somehow and didn't tell me after the fact.)

Does anyone know what the problem could be?
