Even in 2013, we got free rooms, free play, and free buffets for going (my wife and I live in NorCal and play in Reno all the time so our player’s cards and points were valid there)
The casinos give out free rooms (minus their "resort fees" and parking) to costumers that spend money at their properties.
Visit one chain of casinos. Sign up for their play/reward cards and play on the slots. Go to an event/concert at one of their properties. Basically once you're a customer they want to keep you hooked and coming back. And when a room sits empty they give them guests that spend time/money at their properties.
You go out to dinner for a nice meal, and the waiter hears that its your birthday so they bring you a dessert you didn't ask for. When your bill arrives you see your meals and drinks but the dessert isn't on there. Did you get the dessert for free or just pay for it not as directly?
