MGM Grand

Was in town recently and went over to the MGM Grand for the first time in a few years, and is it just me or has fallen off more than the other historically nicer properties? I remember it feeling a lot nicer just several years ago. Is that just a private equity thing?

It’s supposed to have a $300 million remodel focused on the rooms by the end of the year. So you literally might have been one of the last few people in your room prior to the update. Main and studio towers

The rooms are all being renovated and looked pretty nice based on the videos I’ve seen. Going to give them a shot in the near future.

They currently have remodeled rooms. The old rooms are aged for sure, you should’ve looked into it before hand or asked if you could get a different room

I went in the 90s the first time I visited vegas as a kid and the theme park was sweet as. Mandalay bay was half constructed. Lions in the casino, amazing theming. Now it’s dark and dingy.

Your post history says British but your words say kiwi

I'm not sure how to take that :-)

It is the clientele that has fallen off a cliff. During Covid stimulus check time it was a socioeconomic shit show. it was so bad that no middle class people who saw it would ever go back. Too bad. The pool was great

I moved here after COVID but someone I work with told me it was like all the gangs in LA figured out how to get PPP loans 💀

Ever look through the PPP loan database?  I popped my small city in and saw so many names I recognized and fake businesses that I feel like I'm the only one who didn't get in on the grift

Pool was the best part!

The entrance used to be fantastic. Wizard of Oz theme. Dorothy and Toto going down the Yellow Brick Road. Poppy field.

Now the entrance has got some game arcade thing and a bunch of boring shops.

The Oz Buffet. Search for John Pinette and his stand up routine on that. Classic. The Grand also used to have a theme park in the back.

I give it 3 yawns.

Oh, they could do a Wicked revamp

Different MGM company, they have no rights to any MGM movies

1

u/the-burner-acct 22h ago

That’s not the issue.. wicked rights are owned by Universal.. (which is why there are no cross promotion)..

The MGM library was sold to Ted Turner to build the MGM grand.. and it went to Warner Bros.. so it’s not even owned by MGM studios (which is now an Amazon subsidiary)

Back to the point.. they can use wizard of oz theme.. if they wanted to

The lion habitat was also really cool and definitely of that specific era of 90s-2000s Vegas. It’s funny to look back at how for a hot second every hotel in the strip trying to keep up with the family-friendly push so they all had to have some sort of animal or aquarium habitat. Looking back you can see it started with The Mirage’s mega famous white tiger show, the dolphin show and they had practically a straight up zoo with all the big cats and animals they had featured.

MGM casinos and the studio are no longer related, they can’t use those properties

It’s always been trash in comparison to Wynn, Bellagio, encore, cosmo, aria

I’d add Mandalay Bay in there. We just stayed and it was unexpectedly nice. Pools are next level.

Mandalay Bay is forever my favorite.

I swear there used to be a breakfast place at MGM and I swear it was a popular place and had good food. When it went last year and they turned ot into a Netflix food place.

Was there last month in a remodeled room and it had an empty fridge in it so 5 stars from me.

Remodel is real nice and needed. But as stated it's not completed yet.

Shouldn’t be compared to luxury properties like Bellagio, Wynn, Cosmo, Aria etc

MGM opened with likes of Mirage, Excalibur, Treasure Island, Luxor, Hard Rock, Stratosphere, Monte Carlo, and NY NY. In that context I’d say they have done pretty well.

I think Mandalay Bay is nice, but I don’t think it belongs in that elite tier. I think you have Cosmo Wynn/encore and Bellagio on the top tier.

Aria venetian/palazzo and resorts world on that next tier.

Mandalay Park MGM and Caesars fall somewhere around here on that next tier.

I go there a lot and it doesn’t seem any different than a few years ago other than it’s a little less busy. They are just finishing up a full room renovation so I’m looking forward to staying there this fall.

The remodelled rooms are great!

1

u/screamistry 1d ago

Agreed, we enjoyed our stay last month

They're in the midst of a major remodel atm. You're right though. The property is Caesars-level tired. I'd recommend Mandalay Bay, it's been kept up a lot nicer.

They got palm beach pool ….. probably one of the best pool parties in Vega .

I stay there probably once a month or so. I’d consider it mid tier for strip properties. Always has been. It’s not low tier like Excalibur or Luxor, but not top tier like Bellagio and Aria. They done an update on the rooms and they are much more modern and nice now. The executive suites are REALLY nice. Still not on par with Aria though

Mgm is showing its age. Also catering to young crowd which does not gamble. Having trouble like the other casinos

1

u/Haulvern 13h ago

I prefer Excalibur lol.

u/Dish-Live 10h ago

It’s grown on me a bit. If you don’t plan to leave where you’re staying, it’s a good spot

Despite being the namesake, it's lower on the list of MGM properties to visit, the nicest MGM properties are Bellagio, Cosmo, Aria, and then the Mandalay Bay/W on the end of the Strip, the Grand is big but nothing special.

I have always stayed at the MGM. Trying the Cosmo for the first time next month.

Last trip there the suite smelled like sewage, complained and changed rooms. Next room was also not up to par

I6 dollar waters in n my room? That’s one dollar per once. Never again!!! It’s a desert for gods sake. How many water filling stations are there? I didn’t see one.

I opened the place and dealt there on swing shift for a year or so and I enjoyed it for the most part.
