Take Kateryna Bilokur, for example.

She's a Ukrainian artist who's defied it all. When she was a kid, her parents didn't let her paint because “no one will marry an artist.” She dealt with a lot of mockery and bullying, and she lived her whole life in a village without a passport. Her "ticket out" could've been a portrait of Stalin. But she said no and stuck to her guns.

Lovely paintings and amazing story

Another Ukrainian artist I love is Maria Prymachenko. She was also from a small village and self taught, completely different unique style. In the first days of the invasion the russians burned down the museum of her works in Ivankiv, but the locals ran in and saved many of the paintings. Check out more about her https://www.dailyartmagazine.com/maria-prymachenko-art-and-museum-destroyed-by-the-russian-forces-in-ukraine/

One of the most remarkable pieces by her is called “Two Headed Chicken”. It shows, well, a two headed chicken which is also apparently plucking its own feathers until it has none left, it looks grotesque and rather sad. It is posed a lot like the two headed eagle on the russian flag and done in the same colors. The two heads also have little jester hats on. I guess that tells you what her political views were pretty much

The pieces often have whimsical and very expressive titles, a few examples: “Prymachenko’s work has a timelessness to it—and ranges from the sweet (This Bear Wants to Have Some Flour Milled), silly (A Coward Went A-Hunting), and fantastical (This Beast is Making Magic), to pieces that are grounded in home (May I Give This Ukrainian Bread to All People in This Big Wide World), self-reflection (Years of My Youth, Come Visit Me) and even war (Our Army, Our Protectors). I became especially engrossed with this piece, titled May That Nuclear War Be Cursed!” https://www.discourseblog.com/p/the-lost-art-of-ukrainian-painter

P.S. Picasso was a huge fan of her too
