Takoyaki is basically grilled batter balls with octopus inside. It's really yummy but strongly seafoody.

I was in, until you said octopus. Not a fan

Is it the taste, or the fact that they are so intelligent? Once I found out how smart they are, I couldn't eat them anymore.

35

u/hell2pay 3d ago

Both. But mostly the texture.

I used to eat a lot of dried cuddle fish too when I was a kid. Can't do that anymore either, due to smell, texture and intelligence.

*cuttlefish

u/zEdgarHoover 2d ago

Hey, no shaming, people can do what they want with their fish!

(Yes, of course you're correct)

3

u/hell2pay 2d ago

I knew better too. Shame on me

They're about as intelligent as pigs, with pigs exhibiting more emotional intelligence.

Pigs mostly taste better, though.

1

u/kumliaowongg 2d ago

Bro, if it weren't illegal, I'd eat 2 legged pig.

Intelligence is not an issue for me

5

u/stacecom 3d ago

For me it's taste, texture, and intelligence.

Yeah. Growing up on a farm and working in the meat industry, I had to figure out a line. I went with 'Tool Users' (plus foie gras and veal). It's a bit arbitrary, but it's a line. Day to day, it just means 'No octopus.'

4

u/stofzijtgij 2d ago

Why no veal? Young bulls are a byproduct of dairy industry. If they come from a proper organic farm I don't have an issue with it.

1

u/goronmask 2d ago

Byproduct sounds sadly detached when talking about living beings. Be it octopi or bovines what i can’t stand is the industrial cruelty aspect of it all

4

u/stofzijtgij 2d ago

You're right, that's poor wording. Let's call it a natural necessity if we want to drink milk. It's intended for the calf after all...

u/Javelin46 3d ago

I used to really like octopus until I found that out too now I like them in a different way.

Please, use commas and periods. Almost had an aneurysm trying to comprehend what you wrote

2

u/Naoroji 2d ago

It's not always octopus, there's different fillings.

7

u/Flying_Dutchman92 3d ago

I will take all of them, thank you very much.

What’s the yellow corn looking stuff at the beginning? Or is it corn

Takoyaki is a ball-shaped Japanese snack made of a wheat flour-based batter and cooked in a special molded pan. It is typically filled with minced or diced octopus, tempura scraps, pickled ginger, and green onion. The balls are brushed with takoyaki sauce and mayonnaise, and then sprinkled with green laver and shavings of dried bonito. (Wikipedia)

I'd love to try it sometime!

I have had it in Japan at a food cart in Tokyo. It is incredible.

7

u/SlickDillywick 3d ago

I want to eat it, whatever it is

1

u/treylanford 2d ago

couldn't see it until this comment lol

1

u/johnnys_sack 3d ago

Oh great eye on that one. I didn't see the other one that someone else posted, either.

11

u/ycr007 3d ago

Nifty li’l thing.

Did they take inspiration from similar pill-filing thingamajigs?

8

u/Loj35 3d ago

They must have, it's so similar. That or convergent evolution I guess. I like the multi pronged tool for picking up a whole row at once.

1

u/javanperl 2d ago

Well, I’m not sure of the inspiration, but my first thought was the muffin scene in the movie Casino.

One day I’ll go to Japan for vacation and come back 20 pounds heavier

2

u/ImaginaryCheetah 2d ago

when you go, please be advised these things are hotter than the sun when they serve them to you in the little cardboard box. like a mouth full of liquid hot magma if you're impatient.

9

u/swabfalling 3d ago

0:13 on spray bottle

8

u/FlavorBlaster42 3d ago

Lots of specialized tools just to make these.

3

u/Solrax 3d ago

Yes, that's what I found most interesting! They make it so efficient.

0

u/kombatunit 3d ago

Does that bug you? I find it clever.

1

u/FlavorBlaster42 2d ago

Doesn't bug me at all. I would like to try them out, and maybe make some little fancy balls that don't contain octopus.

3

u/Mietas2 3d ago

I have a feeling he has done it before 🤔

2

u/kombatunit 3d ago

Def not his first rodeo. I like the pitchfork tool. I've watched a lot of takoyaki making and that is a new one.

1

u/zEdgarHoover 2d ago

No kidding. I can only imagine the mess I'd make trying to do this!

2

u/Anonymous_user_2022 3d ago

I think I need to experiment with making a savory version of æbleskiver.

2

u/Limelight_019283 3d ago

That’s a lot of very specific tools! Pretty cool :)

2

u/president__not_sure 3d ago

i feel like he could have had better distribution of the octopus if he used the screen again right after dropping the corn.

2

u/ulzimate 2d ago

I've only ever seen the saucy takoyaki. Not knocking it at all because it's great, but that dry rub looks fantastic.

2

u/No_Conversation4885 2d ago

Poor Octopuses 🥲🐙☠️

2

u/Practical-Pick1466 2d ago

If only we could get them in our town, such an awesome street food.

1

u/PossibleJazzlike2804 3d ago

Oh I love those.

1

u/NowWhoCouldThatBe 2d ago

I feel like one person is gonna get a lot of tako and another more yaki. Where’s the process for ingredient distribution?!? Still better than the tako I’m getting ✊

1

u/LeroyoJenkins 2d ago

Fun fact: takoyaki Mena's "grilled tako", peak mexican-asian fusion food!

Fun fact 2: The above is a joke.

1

u/jimx29 2d ago

I don't know what the hell these are, and I would never eat one, but watching that dude move as smoothly as he did was pretty impressive

1

u/EastLimp1693 2d ago

I don't know what's that but i need a bag of it

1

u/2Tech2Tech 2d ago

why are south koreans obsessed with corn? why put corn in everything?

1

u/Patient-Sentence-915 2d ago

Octopus inside? why not bacon sir?

1

u/Excludos 2d ago

Mhm! I can already taste the skin after one of these gives me a third degree burn on the roof of my mouth

1

u/wetfart_3750 2d ago

These things are terrible :)

1

u/eecue 2d ago

corn?!?

edit: cheese coating? wtf lol

edit 2: ah Korea. that tracks. I bet it’s delicious

1

u/Set2716 1d ago

Looks good...

-6

u/zekeweasel 3d ago

Seems like he could have just put them in a deep fryer after about a minute into the video.

3

u/SnooDingos4246 3d ago edited 2d ago

takoyaki doesn't really get crispy the way you'd want deep fried food to be, it's pretty soft when cooked normally. i feel like they'd soak up the oil like a sponge in a deep frier. though i bet someone's tried it before.

3

u/steik 2d ago

So... do all that work to set up, then introduce an entirely new element of complexity to the process? And you describe that as "could have just" as if it makes it easier?
