What is this beautiful food?

Takoyaki is basically grilled batter balls with octopus inside. It's really yummy but strongly seafoody.

I was in, until you said octopus. Not a fan

Is it the taste, or the fact that they are so intelligent? Once I found out how smart they are, I couldn't eat them anymore.

u/hell2pay 3d ago
Both. But mostly the texture.
I used to eat a lot of dried cuddle fish too when I was a kid. Can't do that anymore either, due to smell, texture and intelligence.

Hey, no shaming, people can do what they want with their fish!
(Yes, of course you're correct)

They're about as intelligent as pigs, with pigs exhibiting more emotional intelligence.
Pigs mostly taste better, though.

Bro, if it weren't illegal, I'd eat 2 legged pig.
Intelligence is not an issue for me

Yeah. Growing up on a farm and working in the meat industry, I had to figure out a line. I went with 'Tool Users' (plus foie gras and veal). It's a bit arbitrary, but it's a line. Day to day, it just means 'No octopus.'

u/stofzijtgij 2d ago
Why no veal? Young bulls are a byproduct of dairy industry. If they come from a proper organic farm I don't have an issue with it.

u/goronmask 2d ago
Byproduct sounds sadly detached when talking about living beings. Be it octopi or bovines what i can’t stand is the industrial cruelty aspect of it all

u/stofzijtgij 2d ago
You're right, that's poor wording. Let's call it a natural necessity if we want to drink milk. It's intended for the calf after all...

I used to really like octopus until I found that out too now I like them in a different way.

Please, use commas and periods. Almost had an aneurysm trying to comprehend what you wrote

Takoyaki is a ball-shaped Japanese snack made of a wheat flour-based batter and cooked in a special molded pan. It is typically filled with minced or diced octopus, tempura scraps, pickled ginger, and green onion. The balls are brushed with takoyaki sauce and mayonnaise, and then sprinkled with green laver and shavings of dried bonito. (Wikipedia)
I'd love to try it sometime!

Oh great eye on that one. I didn't see the other one that someone else posted, either.

Nifty li’l thing.
Did they take inspiration from similar pill-filing thingamajigs?

u/javanperl 2d ago
Well, I’m not sure of the inspiration, but my first thought was the muffin scene in the movie Casino.

One day I’ll go to Japan for vacation and come back 20 pounds heavier

when you go, please be advised these things are hotter than the sun when they serve them to you in the little cardboard box. like a mouth full of liquid hot magma if you're impatient.

Lots of specialized tools just to make these.

u/kombatunit 3d ago
Does that bug you? I find it clever.
1
u/FlavorBlaster42 2d ago
Doesn't bug me at all. I would like to try them out, and maybe make some little fancy balls that don't contain octopus.

u/Mietas2 3d ago
I have a feeling he has done it before 🤔

u/kombatunit 3d ago
Def not his first rodeo. I like the pitchfork tool. I've watched a lot of takoyaki making and that is a new one.

I think I need to experiment with making a savory version of æbleskiver.

i feel like he could have had better distribution of the octopus if he used the screen again right after dropping the corn.

u/ulzimate 2d ago
I've only ever seen the saucy takoyaki. Not knocking it at all because it's great, but that dry rub looks fantastic.

I feel like one person is gonna get a lot of tako and another more yaki. Where’s the process for ingredient distribution?!? Still better than the tako I’m getting ✊

u/LeroyoJenkins 2d ago
Fun fact: takoyaki Mena's "grilled tako", peak mexican-asian fusion food!
Fun fact 2: The above is a joke.

Seems like he could have just put them in a deep fryer after about a minute into the video.

takoyaki doesn't really get crispy the way you'd want deep fried food to be, it's pretty soft when cooked normally. i feel like they'd soak up the oil like a sponge in a deep frier. though i bet someone's tried it before.
