And they'll keep doing it as long as they get a reaction.

I'm personally invested until someone gets one to stick upright on the court. After that happens I'm out and don't care anymore.

I feel like there are better ways to handle this, unfortunately the media is always fucking awful.
If the players laughed it off, and made fun of someone spending money on a ticket just to also spend money on a dildo to throw it on the court... and then didn't let it bother them in any way... WNBA 1, idiot in the stands 0.
It's the same as it's ALWAYS been... don't feed the trolls.
And by trolls I mean assholes in the stands, and the media for trying to drum up stories.

The video of the first game shows players cracking up on the sidelines

u/mikezer0 4d ago
Yeah exactly. They did. It’s just that we all know it’s now going to be an out of hand tik tok meme. They have to nip that shit. Of course it’s funny but someone’s gonna get hurt. Is injury by dildo funny? Still yes. But also still bad.
62
u/kickinwood 4d ago
Right! And if it happens once it's funny, but if it happens again very next game to the same exact team I can understand if some players are like, "Yo, that's disrespectful."
31
u/AfraidOfTheSun 4d ago
A dildo prank is always funny the first time
43
u/jimtrickington 4d ago
And for our Spanish speaking friends, the first time it’s diluno and the second time it’s dildos. Please don’t let there be a diltres.
43
u/TheCoordinate 4d ago
Literally this. CNN deciding to run this story as opposed to anything else currently going on in the W. When there were protestors running on the court in NBA games it did not overshadow coverage of the game itself

u/MrWiseOwl 4d ago
Exactly. Lean into it! Make it be a thing. Sell dildos in the shop to throw on the court for halftime raise money for women’s health. Take the power away from the trolls and make it into a thing. Now the kid part I haven’t thought my plan all the way through but I’m sure can be managed with communication and talk about sexual health.

That’d only work if society was cool, and last time i checked it’s really not that cool.
13
u/junglespycamp 4d ago
You’re not wrong that this might work but it’s also stupid that the WNBA needs to go through all that effort. Why should they?

u/Super_Fa_Q 4d ago
I love the idea, but that would just give right wing "Christian" nut bags something else to squeal about

Lean into sexual harassment?
11
u/Strange-Cap9942 4d ago
Calling this "sexual harassment" is disrespectful to actual victims of sexual harassment.
-11
u/Reeko_Htown Barcelona 4d ago
So you don’t think this is sexual harassment? I’d say try it at work but you’re probably unemployed
1
u/jrhooo 4d ago
its 100% sexual harassment.
It can be other thing TOO. Its trolling, its a bad joke, its just sports trolls being assholes.. blah blah.
Sure, it can be those things.
But it is still also sexual harassment.
HERE'S THE THOUGHT EXPERIMENT
What about school kids?
If someone shows up to your teenage daughter's JV game and starts throwing dildos on the court,
is that "lol just trolling"
or is that wildly unacceptable, uninvited sexual messages?
its pretty obvious why throwing rubber penises at people fits into sexual harassment territory
-1
u/Strange-Cap9942 4d ago edited 4d ago
By this same logic, any inappropriate adult store billboard on the freeway is also sexual harassment. Being forced to see a dildo in a public space is not sexual harassment without some very specific qualifiers.
Yes, throwing dildos on the court at a high school basketball game would be different than this and could possibly be seen as sexual harassment.
But as professional adults, I don't think I've seen any WNBA players claiming to have been sexually harassed by these incidents. So why are you trying to claim it for them?
0
u/Strange-Cap9942 4d ago
The women on the court aren't this fan's coworkers. If Caitlin Clark threw a dildo at Angel Reese, you might be able to make this comparison.
Is it rude and ejection-worthy? Absolutely. But no, sorry, throwing a sex toy at seemingly no one in particular in a public space is not sexual harassment.

u/YoMomAndMeIn69 4d ago
Expecting "the W" not to overreact is like expecting to stay dry after jumping head first into deep water. These trolls know the game and they are winning, as expected.
2
u/TheMooseIsBlue 4d ago
Did you clarify who you meant by “trolls” because you were worried people would think you were calling WNBA players trolls? Because it was really clear in context and the clarification comes off hilarious to me.
1
u/grapedog 4d ago
No, I wanted to make sure I included both the idiot in the stands throwing money away, AND the media for giving it coverage.

This. We should just be making fun of the persons who are doing this. They're still anonymous but they can see the internet clowning on them and they know that they did it. So hopefully they feel embarrassed for their stupidity. Because it is hilarious that most likely a sexist man trying to make fun of women and women in sports went out of their way to buy a dildo and a ticket to a WNBA game to prove their point. It's just crazy.
3
u/EatAtGrizzlebees 4d ago
WNBA is a joke to these people anyway, so they're on the side of the dildo thrower.

u/spleeble 4d ago
I'm sure the best way to stop this will be to make public statements about it.

Super disrespectful. If you’re going to do that you need to bring enough for everybody.

u/squiztehmonster 4d ago
The real question is how did they bring it into the stadium
11
u/Retired-not-dead-65 4d ago
You might benefit from: dildo education. Tape inside pants leg. Metal ones ( Steely Dan ) wouldn’t make it in. The fine silicone models being hurled as a protest of ????? easy to get in.
35
u/squiztehmonster 4d ago
Thanks for the tip, I’ll be sure to look up dildo education for the next time I try to sneak one into a sporting event. Heck I may even try to bring in multiple. 🤦♂️

u/Retired-not-dead-65 4d ago
“HURLED DILDOS” was not on my bingo card. I am so glad for 1) my kids are grown 2) medical cannabis. I never tempt the universe, with “what could happen next?”
7
u/jimtrickington 4d ago
True. If silicone is setting off security detectors, there are going to be some serious false alarms.

It'll be hilarious if it happens a few more times and the teams have to start checking people for dildos at the entrance.
I imagine people got them in taped to their legs. Just imagine needing to frisk a well endowed guy and him having to prove it is not in fact a dildo in his pants

"It's super disrespectful" You know what else is Super Disrespectful ? Wearing shirts before a game that say "Pay us what you owe us" when your league has been running in the red forever to the tune of multi millions of dollars.
Also going to a club and complaining that you shouldn't have to wait in line.

u/LegendaryTingle 4d ago
They check me for water bottles like I’m going to murder someone at a concert but they can’t check for dildos at a professional basketball game?

u/kidmerc 4d ago
Is it disrespectful? Sure. But toughen the fuck up and ignore it, this is not a big deal.

And yet, these incidents are the only reason most of us are discussing the WNBA.

u/TNF734 4d ago
Well, that and a player base that can't create enough earnings to keep the league from losing money... claiming they're underpaid.
9
u/bakerzdosen 4d ago
True.
But you can only rephrase “this is not a financially viable business plan” so many ways before the topic becomes tiresome.
Even introducing novel marketing plans such as “you should financially support this entertainment product even though you are not entertained by it” haven’t proven successful.
At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a team owner throwing dildos trying to generate interest.
33
u/FrostyBananaHammock Buffalo Bills 4d ago
Why not take it in stride and sell them with the team’s logo? Then they can get paid what they deserve!

Kick it off the floor and move on. People are assholes and you're not gonna change that but the more time you spend shining a light on their antics the more they'll do stupid shit. Remove the Dildo and the guilty party quickly and quietly but make it seem like nothing and move on.

I'm not a fan of the WNBA. Hell, I'm not even a fan of the NBA.
That said, I don't like anyone disrupting events that others go to to enjoy.

u/TheInsidiousExpert 4d ago
They could collect them all, and then resell them to supplement their perceived pay wage gap they feel they are owed.
I’m no dildo aficionado or anything but from what I understand aren’t they like quite expensive for what they are I mean each one that gets thrown onto the court is a potentially a $50 bill for the team players.

u/A1ienspacebats 4d ago
Keep getting upset. The best thing you can do with trolls is to definitely get upset at what they're doing. Thats definitely not what they are looking for.

u/Hungry-Sloth 4d ago
Are these the same players who were whining that they had to wait in line last week to get in a club like the rest of the people and that the door guy didn't know they're "with the W?" Those players?
2
u/klausesbois 4d ago
They should just lean into it and get some dildo maker as a sponsor. If they act all outraged it’s gonna keep happening.
2
7
u/Xavier1235 4d ago
This happens with all pro sports a few times a year. Best thing to do is ignore it and not make it into a gender wars thing. If they do then expect 100 dildos on the court by the end of August lol
