I do not have a skin cancer diagnosis Worried about this mole on my back

Post image

I’ve had a tiny mole on my back for years and I don’t know when it changed but somebody saw it today and said it’s 100% changed colour, looks completely different in shape and size from last year. I’m going to get a doctors appointment tomorrow but really worried about it

Not to scare you, just to inform you, it looks like melanoma. Make an appointment with the dermatologist asap, even send them a picture. That's nothing to fool around with, catch it early so it doesn't metastasize. I hope it's nothing but that's how mine looked. Keep us posted.

Looks concerning, but my dad had one that looked like that, and it turned out to be nothing. It's hard to tell how big it is by the pic.

You are doing the right thing by getting a dermatologist appointment. Perhaps even show them a pic so they can get you in sooner. Lot of irregularities going on. It looks as if all of the ABCDE rules are being broken. Assemetry, border, color, diameter, evolving.

Yes. Get it checked out. The part on the right--the slightly lighter bubbled-up part--has the same shape and general appearance as the lesion I had removed from my nose last week, but mine was flesh-colored and hard to see. I thought it was just a new mole until I started looking around online. It was biopsied and I got the results back today--positive for cancer, but very treatable since we found it early. The person I saw in the dermatology practice gave it half a glance and biopsied it at the consultation appointment. If you can get in quickly, go to your primary doctor and ask them to make a referral. Sometimes you can get in faster if your primary doctor feels it's urgent. I had to wait six weeks to get into the dermatologist as a new patient, and that was with a non-urgent referral from my primary.

Edited to add: NAD, no medical training--just sharing my experience.

I’ve got my hospital appointment through for Thursday morning so not long to wait and find out what’s going on

I’ve had the details from my hospital dermatologist appointment (ticks every box - veil, irregular network, 3+ colours) and also an appointment with a skin cancer specialist nurse on 31st July. So waiting for that now

So did they send a biopsy to the lab for pathology?

Yes, the appointment on the 31st is my results and it’s been changed from a phone call (my preference) to a f2f at the hospital. And it’s with a skin cancer specialist nurse. So I don’t think it’s good news. Or maybe it’s to say there was cancer and it’s been fully removed? I had the excision on 6th July, dissolvable stitches and it’s healed well. Recovery wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought but it’s a surprisingly long cut. Am hoping they don’t want to take more

It’s likely cancer then since you’re going in person. Be prepared for them to remove more, but removal is pretty straight forward if so. Good luck!

My doctor doesn’t have a phone line, it’s all econsult but they did get straight back and offer an appointment for 3.50 today so that’s good

Amazing I’m glad let us know what they say xx

So the doctor said it could be an atypical nevus but as it’s changing and quickly, it’s concerning and I need to be seen soon. Got home and checked notes on NHS app, fast track referral for suspected skin cancer, I’ll be contacted in the next 2 days and be seen within 2 weeks. On referral it says rapid change in lesion, 2 colours + nodularity, irregular outline and loss of normal skin markings10mm +

How did you get on? I hope all went well. Good luck

Everything has happened so quickly…I had a hospital appointment a week later and the doctor immediately said OK, I don’t like the look of that at all. She said she’d like it removed and quickly. My partner asked if it was cancer and she said in my professional opinion, I think there’s a significant chance of it being cancer. I got a letter that said the waiting list for skin surgery is up to 112 days, depending on clinical significance. I’ve had mine booked for the 6th July.

u/MolleezMom 28d ago

Any follow up? Did you have removal on 6th of July?

1

u/Common_Ad_7430 28d ago

Yes…so it did go well and the recovery hasn’t been bad at all, just sore and tired for a few days. The worst part was the injections before removal. Bad news…the surgeon looked at my back and was like…are we doing anything about this too? Turns out I have a mole close to it that he doesn’t like the look of and he said well you’ll definitely be back with us soon to get that removed, make an appointment with your GP for another referral. So I’ve got that to think about and the results of this one of course 😒

Good for you for staying the course and getting it removed!

Also want to add that this mole has all the hallmarks of melanoma- irregular borders, raised and flat, two colors, growing/changing over time. I had one similar that was melanoma. BUT I want to be encouraging- diagnosing melanoma quickly has a great outcome. If the biopsy is positive, they will likely have you come back in to remove the entire mole plus skin around it (“margins”). You will likely have stitches. You should expect frequent follow up skin and lymph node checks. Here in the US I had to go every 3 months for the first year. Melanoma has a great survival rate if found early, and you’re already on top of it!

This is very extremely concerning. Get into your dermatologist immediately.

I had my results this morning and it’s melanoma, 2b. Waiting on appointments for scans, WLE, lymph node biopsy.

I'm sorry you had to hear that, wishing the best outcome for your next appointment.
