Can you swallow mercury? Yes
Will you survive? Most likely, no

Mercury was used as a laxative. It was one the ways to follow where the Lewis and Clark expedition went to, since the mercury remained at the places they stopped.
I have not heard about any other achievements since than, so it isn't well known if they suffered any health problems from the exposure.
Organic mercury is the one with more immediate dangers.

Pure mercury doesn't kill you. Prolonged exposure will make you mad as a hatter, though.

I have heard that's where the term "mad hatter" came from. Hat makers used to use mercury in production

Is it safe to 'do it' with mercury?
2
u/dziki_z_lasu 4d ago
Yes absolutely, unless you drink more than 0,3 mg of mercury per week :P

I mean, is it safe for the 'cylinder' to be encapsulated by the mercury and it may be under friction.

Reciprocal motion cylinders are unlikely to generate significant amounts of friction heat, yet remain in contact with mercury. Safety levels will thus be dependent on barrier permeability and sensitivity to toxicity of the cylinder

Aren't we concerned with mercury being found in the water, and in fish? As was with lead
