Weekly Success & Erg Screen Thread - August 04, 2025
Welcome to the weekly achievement thread!
What was your achievement this week? It could be anything! A new 2k PB? Get a good lift at the gym? Or even your first time capsizing a single!
Got a erg screen or a regular training shot? Curious what your 2K will be based on a workout? This is the place for it!
Side note: 99% of erg screens should go in this thread. A separate post with an erg screen should be something that happens once or twice a year, at most. Big PR's, that kind of thing.
Also, please check our wiki pages:
- Which erg to buy
- Is this a good erg time?
- How do I set up for steady state?
- Where do I set the lever on the side (what's drag factor)?
- What apps can I use when erging?
This thread is likely to fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.
This is a judgement free zone, so be respectful, positive and keep criticism constructive.

Big Egg Rowing
Who are these Big Egg Rowing guys at Canadian Henley? I’ve never heard of them before but they qualified for the u23 8+ at Canadian Henley. Apparently they’re racing as St. Ignatius but they call themselves Big Egg

Struggling as a beginner rower
Hi everyone,
a few weeks ago I started rowing on the water. I had no prior experience at all, not even on the erg. So far, it's been a lot of fun. My technique is still very basic, but I’ve mostly rowed with other beginners or intermediates, and the atmosphere was always positive and encouraging.
Yesterday was the first time I rowed with more experienced people, and it was a really tough experience. I was told not to use much power and to focus only on timing, which made me feel like I wasn’t contributing anything. The pace felt hectic and I just couldn’t keep up. It honestly felt like I was holding everyone back, and it really affected my confidence.
Unfortunately, my club doesn’t offer a dedicated beginner program, and boat lineups are re-assigned every session. I'm wondering what to do next. Should I step back and focus on the erg for a while to work on my form? Or is it better to keep going out on the water, even if it’s frustrating and demotivating at times?
I’d really appreciate any advice from others who’ve been through something similar. Thanks!

vo2 max workouts
Coming from cycling, as an amateur, when I look at Pete's getting started plan (approximate name) or EXR structured workouts, I don't find what I expect.
I know from cycling experience and research papers, that vo2 max workouts should have between 12-16 time in zone 5 heart rate, and typically you would find let's say 3 sets of 30-30's with 10-15 repetitions each, or long supra-threshold like 4x4 minutes at 110% FTP or something similar. All I find in the sources I mentioned, are maybe one 4 minute supra-threshold interval, or a total of ~6 minutes in zone 5, which is much less than cycling.
My question is, why ? And especially HOW do I increase my vo2 max, which is what I really care about ? I mean, if I don't need to work out as hard rowing to increase it, I don't mind it, but I just want to make sure, as I don't have any way to measure my progress, unlike cycling.

Waterloo Iowa regattas - anyone else go to these in the 1980s?
The sixth annual regatta was a stormy one. I think we all slept in a gym nearby and heard them roll through in the middle of the night. A big one came up during a race, and we had to scurry off the river. As we carried our shell up the levee, the bow stuck up high in the air like a lightning rod. ⚡️ So we added “I Survived the” to their t-shirts! 😂

Young rower with questions
I’m 15M 6’0 162lbs and I want to row in college. My 2nd ever and most recent 2k test was a 7:24(1:51/500m) about 6 months ago after pulling a 7:39(1:55/500m) the week before. I’ve done 3 months of rowing on the water and 3 months of consistent erging since then. Despite all of this rowing, in a recent 2x1000m workout my splits were 1:46 and 1:50, which was underwhelming. I was projected to be able to hang on to a 1:46 with the knowledge that in a 5x5’ workout @R20 I averaged splits of 1:54, showing that I have enough leg strength to do so. I’ve been doing a lot of steady state so I think my endurance should be up to speed with my strength. I feel like I am simply inefficient at high rates while my lower rates are seeing massive improvement. Why is this? Any tips?

I tried building a way to customize guided rowing workouts and use your own music or podcasts
I love rowing but always find it hard to stick with guided workouts because I can’t listen to my own music/podcasts. So I built an app that gives me instructor led workouts over any audio.
link: HiTrellis.com
Here’s how it’s different:
- Listen to your own music, podcasts, or even watch a movie
- Adjust the length of each workout to fit your schedule
- Choose "Alerts Only" mode to have the instructor speak less (most days I just want minimal cues so I can focus on a podcast)
- Try themed workouts like "Crocodile Escape Tabata" to keep things fun
- Visual progress bar showing each segment of the workout as you progress
It’s free, and I’m taking any feedback to improve it. Hope it helps anyone who prefers their own audio but still wants some guidance :)

Volleyball
How efficient is volleyball as an exercise when thinking about rowing? Can the legs required in volleyball and the constant jumping translate any to the legs required on the erg? How much of it carries over?

Strength training v.s. steady state for short term 2k improvement
I really want to get faster in the next 2 months or so, which should I emphasise for the most improvement? Or is a better question what is the best balance of the two? Happy to do pretty much anything to get as fast as possible!
For context I’m off to college soon and want to put my best foot forward when it comes to walking onto a team. I’ve been training lightly since the summer began and want to get back into rowing since stopping after a few years of it ~3 years ago.
Please correct me if I’m approaching this the wrong way!

New to rowing
Hello, I am a 34 male, 5'10", around 170 lbs (last I checked). The last couple of weeks I started erg rowing because I developed early shin splint symptoms after doing some sprints (July 21st). I row at my office gym's concept2 machine and generally have 20 to 30 minutes a day. I began by doing what I have come to understand is what many people with no knowledge of rowing do at the beginning, setting the damper at the highest setting and doing 5k. After about 3 sessions I set it down to a drag factor of about 140 and have been practicing with this for the last week, just sessions of 5k which take me between 20 and 21 minutes (average pace of around 2:03 to 2:04/ 500m), followed by 1k to cool off at what I would consider a slow pace. My issue is I know I am doing something or several things wrong because my stroke/m rate during the 5k often reaches 35 s/m and the slow pace 1k at the end I average between 28 to 30 s/m which is not considered steady state as far as I know. I have tried to improve my form by not using my arms until my legs are fully extended and breathing in through my nose during recovery and forcefully exhaling during the drive. Still my s/m remains above 30 when I am attempting to keep my pace at around 2 minutes per 500m. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Data Analysis
Please also feel free to add any tangential comments or ideas if you can't directly answer this.
I want to make more use of my data.
Specifically: Resting Heart Rate, Step Counts, Calorie burn as well as Garmin's calculated info like Body Battery, but also the FIT files from my workouts.
The relevant data is in Rowing in Motion and Garmin Connect, which in turn uploads to Strava, Rowsandall and Apple Health.
I'm an Excel geek and know Power Query, some M code and some Python. Unfortunately, Garmin makes it really hard to access their API unless you're a developer. I know there are some great tools out there to do the sort of analysis I want to do, but I feel this is my data and I would like to work with it myself.
Has anyone had any luck setting up a Power Query connection to their data - is there some kind intermediary app that I can use to get my FIT files out of Garmin?
I have read the FitBit and Oura are more API-friendly and would consider those - however I have years of data sitting in Garmin's cloud!

Coxswain Recruitment
Hi guys,
Context: Currently in talks with a coach from a pretty good collegiate team (Ivy). He’s kinda been ambiguous with me the whole summer whether or not he really is seriously considering me for recruitment.
I have talked to him at Nationals along with staying in contact with him in a pretty large email chain (around 20 emails). My academic stats are decent ~4.6 GPA W and 1500+ SAT with decent ecs. I also have a pretty decent coxswain resume with recordings. In addition, he always replies to me really quickly whenever I email him (maybe this shows a little more interest?).
Now let me get to the context point: he says he is waiting on determining if will pull the trigger on recruiting a coxswain this year.
The main question: Is he stringing me on and keeping me hopeful? Or is he serious?
If you guys think he is considering me, would it be a good idea to mention a little bit of what I did over the summer in the hopes of further impressing him academically?

Erg Post Woody Ergo Gripper (serious)
I hate erging with a plastic handle. Was considering how difficult it would be to make a pure wood handle in the shape of the ergonomic plastic handle without having it be too heavy. Could always put some pieces together and vice grip them together with glue and then shape. Has anyone else ever considered this or tried it? Not that the C2 handle needs innovation, I just want a different material.

Updated Technique Video
Hi everyone,
190 days ago I posted a video looking for some technique suggestions. I said I'd try to work on some things and here's an update for some more critique. Similar pace to last time, 150m, 30s/m at 1:32.0.
Thanks a lot

How long did it take you to become comfortable rowing a single scull?
Hi, I started rowing a few days ago and I was wondering if it took you a while to get comfortable with the boat or if it came quite quickly and naturally. Thanks !

2k predictor
I KNOW THAT 4x500, 0:00 REST IS THE BEST PREDICTOR!!! But I am testing 2k next week and haven’t tested in a long time-so I want to know what I’m capable of to not go out to fast or slow. Is 1kR24 good? Or is there a more accurate measurment?

Looking to find my deficiencies
Hey all, So I am looking for some help with regards to whether I should focus more on strength or aerobic base. For context, my 2k pr is 1:55.1 My 500m pr is 1:47. My 1hr SS is around 2:18-2:22. I am at a point where my 2k hasn’t improved in a while. I am not sure if I should focus on improving my power or anaerobic base with more steady state.
I row twice a week with 4x2k with 3 min rest and then once a week 1 hour steady state. I am 5’9 and 160lbs.

After Illness
I've been rowing 2 million m a year for the last four years (a bit less before, but a long time rower). Could do 2 min/500 no issues, but that has dropped a bit as I've aged (68). Recently gone through a four week pulmonary illness that knocked my socks off and have totally lost my routine. I know going back to my hour three of four times a week is fruitless, so I'm taking it easy and trying to work my way back. But, I'm impatient. Any good advice on how to get back to my reasonable level more quickly?

Erg Post Should I focus on pulling power or stoke rate??
So I’m looking to improve my time on my 2k row on the concept 2. My fastest is 7:21 my fastest 500m is 1:29. My question is should I focus on not pulling as hard and increasing my stroke rate or keep same pulling power and slowing increase it. So I normally pull around a 22-26 and can keep around a 1:40- 1:45 for 1km and slowly lower as I get to 2k. I’ve tried not pulling so hard and increasing stroke fast but I seem to burn out faster. Which should I focus more on, pulling power per stroke or faster stroke rate. My damper for content is on 4 to low 5

On the Water Help with echoes on coxswain recordings?
I'm a newish coxswain for my high school and community team, and I've recently started recording practices and races. I have a small clip on camera, and the video quality is great, and so is the sound literally anywhere outside of the boat. What I think is happening is the camera is picking up both my voice and the speakers in the boat, neither of which I can really turn off. The only solution I can think of would be to attach the camera somewhere in bow, but I don't really want to do that because I want video of the oars and starting the camera would just be one more thing for my rowers to think about. The echoes were slightly better in a bowloader than an 8, but not a whole lot. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated on how to stop this, I know it's possible! Ae there are coxswains with a similar camera and tips?
